At this point, the information does point to the officer making a fatal mistake. It is never procedure to open fire when civilians are present (or could be present - assuming the officer didn't check the dressing rooms). It doesn't sound like that happened.

ModPal, I'm not sure I follow you here. Who said the cops can't shoot somebody who is beating people with a bike lock?

    Thats not true at all.

Every situation is different, and civilians are virtually always around.

If officers couldn't open fire around civilians they wouldn't have guns.

One day you, or someone close to you, may end up on the dirty end of the stick and if it happens, please be sure to excuse the psycho Slave Patroller who inflicted the harm on you or your loved ones.

The people who find this accidental shooting-through-the-walls death, and similar, unacceptable. Violent criminals can show up anywhere, including where crowds of innocent people. Cops (and everyone) do not have 100% accuracy with firearms. Thus, if cops are shooting violent criminals, there will be misses that hit innocent people. If cops are not shooting violent criminals, then cops are at higher risk of being injured while subduing violent criminals and we have to pay more for them to do so. Theres legit arguments both ways, but a choice is required.

OK. I get your point now. I don't believe anybody is cool with *NOT* containing a threat but there are still protocols that should take place.

I have not seen anything that suggests the officers cleared the area or checked the dressing rooms. I also did not see anything about officers using less lethal methods to subdue the suspect. I haven't seen anything about the suspect's mental stability. Of course, police officers have to react quickly to get control of a chaotic situation and when people are being harmed, sometimes the only course of action is what happened here.

My concern is there has to be checks and balances. Police officers can't just haphazardly open fire inside a place of business especially within business hours where X number of shoppers are around. We are trained to assess and respond with the least amount of lethal force.

The police are not "automatically" right and they are not "automatically" wrong. Until we get more details on this case, it's hard to ascertain if it was procedural or not. I'm sure the little girl's parents don't care about those details but they are important to ensure this can't happen again.

It will happen again. We can put in measures to reduce it, but the war on crime is going to have some amount of innocent casualties no matter what. The question is how expensive do we want to make enforcing the law in the process of reducing those casualties. Somewhere in between a single cop spraying bullets at a perp in a crowd of people and shutting down and evacuating an entire city block before sending in an armored assault and apprehension team for every report of violence is a middle ground where we have an acceptable public risk and an acceptable public cost. Trying to mitigate either of them too much will cause the other to increase to an unacceptible level.

How much do you think the cost will be to the police dept for killing a teenager in a dressing room?
My guess the lawsuit will be millions of $$$$$.

    Speaking of more expensive.

what this tells me police need better fire arm training more time at the range so they don't miss and and hit an innocent instead
and you liberals want cops to shot perps in the arm or leg when they cant even hit center mass

How much do you think the cost to the police department would be if the cops just tried to talk down the maggot as he assaulted more victims, smashing them in the head with a bike lock? My guess would be
    Millions more of $$$$$

So true. Sad but funny. I don’t know how many times I’ve read where some leftist anti says “why not shoot them in the leg? :roflol: Absolutely ridiculous!! But funny. You can certainly tell that that lib has never shot a handgun, much less in a hurried, hi stress situation. I was half expecting someone here to ask why the cops didn’t shoot the lock out of his hand.

LA has an Epidemic of Trigger Happy Cops:

Critics say they’ve heard the same before, and that it never changes the fact that LAPD officers are empowered to pull out their guns too quickly and fire them too freely — especially when they are confronting suspects who do not have guns of their own

    1) Fire the Cop who fired the Shot (and, have that Trigger-Happy MURDERER'S Name added to a Nationwide Blacklist--So, that they can never again work in Law Enforcement).
Trigger-Happy IDIOTS (Like That KILLER Cop) Don't Belong Anywhere Near a Badge and a Gun.

    2) Give this Innocent Child's Family a Multi-Million Dollar Settlement.

    ^At a MINIMUM (For Starters).

Then as a former cop you know theres most likely more to the story. Best to really wait until the whole story unfolds and more information comes out. But I’d bet there is more to the story. I’d bet perhaps the maggot was
Swinging the lock on someone else? Perhaps had something in his hand and was attempting to draw down on an officer with whatever it was? Now I will admit I could be wrong but when reading these story’s I always ask myself whats the real story.

The maniac didn't have a gun. He wasn't beating people in a dressing room with a bicycle lock.

Cops don't have any means of stopping someone besides shooting them? And they don't have any means of shooting someone and not having bullets sprayed all over?

Somebody always brings this up. There's a pretty big difference between shooting someone in the leg and shooting someone in a dressing room whom you didn't even know was there.

A tragedy to be sure. I have no idea why cops were shooting at an unarmed suspect. You would have to ask them. I imagine if they charged and convicted officer Potter last week for what appears to be an accident, the same will happen to this cop.

Because if the officer was capable of shooting this maggot in the leg then surely they wouldn’t have missed so bad as to have shot this poor girl.

cops never speak to police, they know better, they lawyer up

better to tell why you did it, after the evidence comes out, that way you can tailor your story based on that

no one should ever speak to the police, guilty or innocent

So for you it is ok for the police to kill with no consequences.
