But don't take my word for it. Take the word of an expert on the matter. Will it matter to you? NO! As long as you can still put gas in your car and go grocery shopping, that is all that matters to any of you. (Though there could be a few exceptions) I am reminded of a lyric in a Frank Zappa song about the godlike brainwashing power of TV called, "I'm the slime." I have found the lyric to be such a true statement that it should be made the global motto for humanity. It is, "Don't go for help. No one will heed you."

Living here, I would say she ran out of luck. Our higher standard of living is the only thing that makes up better than North Korea.

She is right. Our higher education system is largely run my idiots who contribute little to society other than indoctrinate students. Most professors who couldn't hack it in the real world so they run back to education.

She’s in America now. She dosent have to go to one of the liberal indoctrination camps, universities.
There are some that do t brainwash. Some actually TEACH. But the wonderful thing is that she can choose here. She could not do that in NK. It might take some time and research but she can find real institutions of higher learning and not a leftist institution.

Yeah, but when you clean it the dirt and dust doesn't constantly say you cheated when you cleaned

So true. Might as well be re-education camps. The drivel taught in schools now is a joke.

Theyre either from socialist countrys so they accept being indoctrinated anyways. Or they want the good education but are will to accept some indoctrination. I do suspect they get it in their socialist countrys as well.

Huh........wouldn't "indoctrination" mean you DIDN'T get a good education? We are talking about higher learning here. I would seem you can't have both.

She has obviously become capitalist and has found a scam to make herself relevant.

Yeonmi's story is quite interesting. Escaped North Korea, Sex trafficked in China, top of her class in South Korea. Real smart girl.

She doesn't believe America is worse, just that she felt just as oppressed in the school system.

I suspect she is smart enough to know she can make lots of money telling these stories (regardless of whether they're true, false or exaggerated) to "news" organisations like Fox. She might even get a second book out of it. And isn't that the capitalist American Dream after all?

Strange framing is strange. Honest Joe is smart enough to say dishonest things that can be thought to be true as long as they are not asserted to be true.

If you believe she is lying to make money, why not just say that, Honest Joe? Wouldn't that be the honest thing to do?

I don't know whether she is telling the truth or not but then nor do the "news" broadcasters either. They don't care though, they'll broadcast it as fact as long as it matches their predefined narrative. If the same person had said the opposite, she'd never be interviewed on Fox but might have on CNN.

How do they do that? How do you broadcast facts into people's heads? How did you manage to make yourself immune to this tactic?

    https://www.cnn.com/2014/12/10/politics/north-korea-defectors-share-stories/index.html

CNN reported her too. Is there some fine print "According to the surgeon general nothing in this article should be understood as factually true" messaging that clarifies they are broadcasting it as fantasy?

She's not lying per se and I know this sounds like "the code is just guidelines" in the Pirate movie but it's not. She's reporting honestly but putting her "spin" on it. which we all do.

My question is "don't the 'wokesters' have a right to push their viewpoint too?

IMO she needs to realize she has to stand up for her OWN beliefs here. If she thinks Jane Austen is a good story she needs to speak up for it and to say WHY she thinks that. She might get a lower grade,( which she can take to the Dean for a hearing) but she won't be beaten and thrown in prison, and that is the major difference between here and North Korea.

There are other things like freedom and opportunity. Comparing the US and NK is beyond ridiculous. Our public schools are an embarrassment, though. She is right about that. The state of public education in the US is the single largest impediment to a good future. The US congress is the second largest one.

So your source, the politically biased New York Post and claim that a, otherwise unqualified, defector is an expert should throw up huge RED FLAGS about this report. I'm thinking it just might be a little biased. In any case These United States, RightByGodNow, are STILL, the GREATEST economic engine on this planet.<-period I honestly didn't read your article but I do know a little about North Korea and a LOT about my beloved Country and, as long as we're quoting, I have a quote for you from the movie "Tom Horn" (paraphrased); "North Korea couldn't stand on it's mommies shoulders (Russia/China) and kiss The United States ass!

She's addressed this, and her experience in doing this is why she made the comparison. The foundation of the argument is that the North Korean regime has control of the language people are allowed to use and how they are allowed to use it. Yeonmi says she witnessed this same control in university. She says she had to learn to censor herself in university to "create safe spaces" and that reasoning was exactly the same as the reasoning imposed in North Korea. She's not pointing out that the punishment is the same. You don't get publicly executed for misgendering dear leader. She's pointing out that the effect is the same.

She contrasts for example with the South Korean education system. She says the South Korean focus is on learning data. She says our focus is on shaping what to think about data and that effort is exactly what she experienced in North Korea. In South Korea she learned that the North Korean language was changed such that there were concepts she couldn't think about because there was no word for it. She uses the examples, freedom, love, and gay. She believes that the control of language is an attempt to control thought and behavior, and she thinks that's what she witnessed at Columbia.

I've never really agreed with the philosophy, "Those who can't do, teach." For the most part, I would say that there just isn't much to do in the private sector for them to do. And look at China. From what I hear, they have hordes of unemployed engineers. And an engineering degree isn't very easy to get. You have to be real good at things like mathematics and physics. I also have a brother who went through some bad **** in Nam and later to college on the GI bill. When it came to things like advanced mathematics and advanced calculus and was first in his class. He never did find a job to match his talents. But he did eventually find a job that required some education. The person who ran the business kept asking him how he did a certain thing. Eventually my brother gave in and told him. He didn't remain employed there for too much longer after that.

Also, when it comes to idiot teachers who indoctrinate students, I think another old saying that I don't agree with either often comes into play. "If you can't beat them, join them." Those people put a lot of money and effort into their education. Which they no doubt want to give them a good life. If they use their education to rock the boat of our political and economic cult that most people follow, they put the good life that they hope to spend in jeopardy.
