all 4 were shooting the same rifle so it is unclear which fired the shot that hit a mom in her own backyard next door.

i do think this do called "mom" was responsible for not keeping her little darlings indoors while the neighbors were engaged in completely legal 2nd amendment activity. are her wounds punishment enough or should she be charged with reckless child endangerment?

A Florida woman suffered a serious gunshot wound in her backyard after being hit by a bullet fired from a high-powered rifle from neighbors who were next door target shooting.

Heather Sitton of Indiantown told TV station WPBF that she and her family including three children were out in her backyard with some friends getting ready for a mule ride in the mostly rural town in inland Martin County.

The station reported that a bullet entered Sitton’s right arm, shattered the bone, exited the arm, then hit her clavicle and left art. Sitton told the station that her 8-year-old daughter had just been standing in that area moments before, as well.

Sitton was hospitalized with the injury.

Citizens are 100% liable for their backstops. These fellas are looking at jail time for reckless discharge at minimum.

What is your point. You gave a small sample of accidents. There is also a long list of people who were saved by having a gun available.

The same applies to just about every human endeavor on the face of this earth.

I remember Obama shooting skeet at Camp David. The safety precautions were minimal at best.

Perhaps those guys could turn things around, stating they knew the woman had animosity towards them and claim self defense. They'd be the talk of the town in gun loving circles.

my point is that of the 4 shooters none had the intelligence to notice that a gamily was just the other side of their makeshift range.

are you suggesting that these nimrods were saved from a florida housewife by standing their ground with their "high powered rifle?" or maybe that it is not a responsibility of the tool user to operate their tool safely?

They were not "responsible". When you pull the trigger, it is your responsibility to know where the projectile will terminate.

Irresponsible gun owners. Just like irresponsible automobile operators. Irresponsible parents. The list goes on and on.

What's the point of this thread?

The term "high powered rifle" is used to reveal ones ignorance of firearms. If it were a BB gun, we would be discussing a minor boo boo. Even a 22 can travel a long distance. There is no excuse for what they did.

No they won't. There ignorance got someone injured. You don't shoot how powered rifles with an adequate back stop. Note my great uncle's lived in a mostly rural part of Kansas. there nearest neighbor was about a mile and a half away. I note the story left out any comment on the distance the bullet traveled before striking her. High powered rounds say .308 and up can be lethal at 800 yards or so at top end a Barret can and has killed at ranges exceeding a mile.

Accidents happen. Make the people that were target shooting pay for any hospital bills and leave it at that.

Cheese and Rice, you could tell from the start that wasn't going to end well, but, it could have been worse ... nearly was.

Accident's don't happen with firearms, negligence does. The problem today is the NRA's lost focus on gun education and safety and became a lobbyist for Gun Manufacturer's under the guise of right's. The NRA used to focus on gun education and we were all better for it.

My generation was taught about firearms by men that fought in WWII, they knew the consequences of, even momentary, lapse in gun safety. My father and uncles drilled firearm safety into me and my cousins from the time we could understand what they were talking about. We could make mistakes with a lot of things, but not gun's. A long time before I even knew who Lt. Col. Jeff Cooper was I knew by heart his four principals of gun safety.

    • All guns are always loaded ALL of the time.
    • Never point a gun at something you don't want destroyed
    • Know your target and what's behind it.
    • NEVER put your finger on the trigger until you're ready to shoot.
A lady was nearly killed because some idiots NEGLIGENTLY violated those rules.

i put "high powered rifle" in quotes because it is directly from the link, which does not actually name the rifle or caliber. a bb gun can put someone's eye out and should, as a matter of safety training, be treated exactly as any other fire arm.

Do you believe the shooters were acting responsibly?

Has someone else claimed they were acting responsibly?

Are are you just trying to build a strawman by calling them '"responsible" gun owners'?

Clearly they were not shooting responsibly, and they should (and I suspect will) be held 'responsible' for the consequences of their irresponsibility.

And a much much longer list that shot others because they had a gun available and they just... didn't like them.

So if you're going to compare apples to oranges, you need to compare them also to watermelons.

A short list like that is meaningless. There is also a long list of situations where guns kept people alive or from being attacked.

How many people decided not to break into our house because they knew it was likely I had guns and knew how to use them?

I realized that. Journalists need to add embellishments and few readers know any better. Basic firearm safety is knowing where the projectile will terminate. Shoot into a mountain! Of course, FL does not have many of those!
