Donald Trump repeated his praise of Vladimir Putin as “smart” and called American leaders “dumb” as Russia pressed on with its widescale invasion of Ukraine in the face of fierce resistance.

As world leaders united to condemn the Russian president and impose sweeping sanctions on his government and oligarch allies, Mr Trump doubled down on earlier comments about Mr Putin.

“Yesterday reporters asked me if I thought President Putin is smart. I said of course he’s smart,” he told the crowd at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Orlando, Florida.


“The problem isn’t Putin is smart — which of course he is smart — it’s that our leaders are dumb,” he said, adding that Nato nations “are not so smart, they are looking the opposite of smart.”​

This is why putin wouldnt have invaded under trump. Russia spent a lot of money buying half the Republican Party.

 

If you are referring to just those two lines in the op, then I think the answer in no. It is probably not something a former president should be saying publicly during the Russian invasion of Ukraine but I don't see how it is traitorous.

Pretty much every person I know has at one time or another, has said that a politician was dumb, stupid, clueless etc... especially in reference to a comment, event or policy. Overall, someone in the position of president is not going to be stupid if you are referring to standard academic measures but there are numerous examples where they have said and supported stupid policies.

As far as Putin being smart, if you were to ask me if Putin is a smart person I would answer yes. If you asked my opinion on whether Putin invasion of Ukraine is smart I would say no but I would preface it with Putin knows a lot more about this situation than I do. So his opinion probably counts a lot more than mine. Also my evaluation is looking at what I perceive the impact is on Russian and its people. Putin's assessment could solely be based on what is good for him and only he knows that.

 

They didn’t have to invade Ukraine, they were working on dismantling the US.
