Biden announces ban on Russian oil imports, other energy products (msn.com)

"President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that the U.S. will ban imports of Russian oil and other energy products, but will not be joined in doing so by many European allies and partners.

The move is expected to trigger sharply higher gasoline and other energy prices in the U.S. and worldwide.

Speaking from the White House, he said "the United States is targeting the main artery of Russia's economy" and said it means "the American people will deal another powerful blow to Putin's war machine." "

Well that's good. I think we can all probably agree that we shouldn't be funding both sides of a war. Thats what buying Russian oil while sending weapons to Ukraine is- paying two countries to fight eachother, prolonguing the conflict, increasing the death and destruction.

The questions is- are we going to loosen restrictions on our own energy industry to compensate? We're now pretty close to the price of oil where things like tar sands become profitable again, and there's plenty of that 'round here. Or are we instead going to pay even more to buy it from other autocratic nations that may not currently be aggressing against their neighbors, but have in the past and likely will in the future -in part with the money they make selling us oil that we could drill and produce ourselves.

I am not sold on this decision at all. I think the Biden administration is probably making a mistake chiefly because we are not on the same page as our European allies, there will NOT be a unified effort, but it will hurt Americans by fueling inflation along with virtually every other economic macro-trend post pandemic and it will hit lower income Americans disproportionately, especially those with fixed incomes.

It smacks me as an emotionally based impulsive decision, more than a well thought out one. I am afraid its going to hurt us more than Russia, and promote divisions between the allies and really screw the working poor here at home more than anyone.

No we should not engage in a implementing a 'no fly zone' and no, we are not obliged to come up with something else to make us collectively feel better about the fact we won't and that is exactly what my gut tells me about this. Bad call.

    That all seems likely.

    However the alternatives are:
-Continue funding the 'Russian war machine' and stop supporting Ukraine, effectively supporting a Russian victory
-Continue funding the 'Russian war machine' and keep supporting Ukraine, effectively paying them both to keep the war going to kill more of eachother and destroy more of Europe

I think 'Biden' (his advisors, really, Biden doesn't 'decide' F-all) are making the right call in not funding both sides of a war. But I'm pretty sure We The People will be taking a larger hit for it than we need to... they're not going to turn our domestic energy production back on.

Trump predicted $6/7 dollar Biden gas more than a year ago. So worth it to not read those mean tweets anymore.

Good move. Now we just have to call off the sanctions to US oil producers.

We already produce more than any other country. Overall, said production has been climbing since the 2020 dive. Biden's influence on federal land production accounts for less than 15% of production. But, yes, you are right: Biden is (finally) making the right call, and even the Republicans who agree with him will do everything they can to punish him for it anyway.

Evidently, Biden was too stupid to remember that China just announced that they were Russia's best strategic partner. Is this really going to be the end to dollar hegemony? Is this how it ends, by a feckless boob like Biden? I guess the more important question is going to be, who is going to fight for Biden's war with Russia? WWIII starts by an errant filling of Biden's depends. Joy.

Still haven't decided if he's too weak on Russia or too strong on Russia, huh? And, no, everyone knew China was going to back Russia up on the trade side. No on is surprised.

    ^^This^^

We are looking at replacing two of our fleet vehicles in the next 6 months and have moved from considering gas to now only considering electric. It will make us revise our service logistics to be more efficient but that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

So, instead of letting the market create efficiencies, the greenie heads think they can just demand forcast it. This all worked out so well for the Soviets....

No! Stop buying F150 for city commutes! My last 3 cars were a 2.5L V5, a 1.8L V4 and now a 1.4L V4. I went from filling up every week to filling up every 2 week.
And it's simply capitalism. Prices follow demands. Less demands lower prices, more demands higher prices. That's how it works, unless you're advocating for price controls, which you'd bitch against either way.

Buying russians ressources at a heavy discount and thus depriving Russia of much needed cash? If I was Russia, I'd be moving some troops to guard against the upcomming Chinese invasion of her eastern ressources rich provinces...

I've said neither. I know that's not superficial enough for you. I've said he's stupid. And if you look at the actual events, he's both a) created an ever increasing cost of energy here in the US by driving up world Oil bbl prices, b) he funded billions of dollars to the Russians to fund their war effort, c) he's continued, until today to fund the Russian war machine, d) he just gave the Russians and the Chinese a reason to create their own exchange service. e) he hasn't provided any view of what he thinks success actually looks like, except that to get there it will cost americans more money, f) he's made the decision between food and getting to work a real decision for many more americans today, g) he's isolated the US internationally.. who wants to deal with this loser?

Those are facts. He sent Khamal too to negotiate with adults and didn't let her take knee pads..... And at the same time, he's decided that the Ukrainian border is the only one worth defending all the while keeping the gates open to Mexico.

At what point do you stop shilling for this guy?

Is it? Watch how folks respond to $7 gas. Biden allowed a war to get on the good side of AOC.

Ok, now we can stop complaining about him NOT banning it and start complaining about the fact that he did ban it.
