BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — The coronavirus pandemic ushered in what may be the most rapid rise in homeschooling the U.S. has ever seen. Two years later, even after schools reopened and vaccines became widely available, many parents have chosen to continue directing their children’s educations themselves.

Homeschooling numbers this year dipped from last year’s all-time high, but are still significantly above pre-pandemic levels, according to data obtained and analyzed by The Associated Press.

Families that may have turned to homeschooling as an alternative to hastily assembled remote learning plans have stuck with it — reasons include health concerns, disagreement with school policies and a desire to keep what has worked for their children.

In 18 states that shared data through the current school year, the number of homeschooling students increased by 63% in the 2020-2021 school year, then fell by only 17% in the 2021-2022 school year.

    =======================================================

It's always nice to see very positive unintended consequences that reduce the power of the Big Government Leftists. More and more children are going to receive and education that does not include CRT, Alternative Gender Studies, and other self and national hating curriculum.

These parents have realized they are better off without the ideological bureaucrats so involved in their children's lives. All of these parents should be pushing for vouchers to empower the parents to pick the winners and losers of education.

There is going to become two sets of education standards in this nation.

    (A) The Public Education system where the children are indoctrinated and they fail basic Math, English, Science, etc.

    (B) Parent driven education where the children have a focus on learning Math, English, and Science and are successful in their proficiency of the subjects.

Sadly, the poor urban kids are going to be stuck in Group A and fall further and further behind as they are indoctrinated and forced to fail in a system designed to empower teachers and administrators over the children and parents.

That depends on the parents. Most find that teaching their kids is fun. It took schools to make learning a dull thing that children hate.

Home schooling is the best way to perpetuate ignorance from generation to generation.

Opening up to the world, socializing, sharing knowledge and building a critical mind all happen at school.

Yeah just think of the opportunities kids have being taught by a bunch of blue-haired people, smattered with tattoos and bottom surgeries.

Whats not to love about modern public education ?

Confused boys in girls bathrooms. Confused boys wrecking Title IX. 'Equity"/Race-Sex more valued over Merit/Equality. Shaming kids with Critical Race Theory type indoctrination.

You don't know homeschooling. You only know what you want to believe on the topic.

Homeschooling kids consistently outperform kids with Public Educations. They most often work in groups where they do socialize, share knowledge, critically think, and are not exposed to ridiculous garbage that isn't about education, but about indoctrinating.

I look at @Bill Carson's answer (which you liked) and it confirms what I said.

Homeschooling is the perfect way for conservatives to pass on to their children their homophobia, racism and hatred of anyone in this country who thinks differently than them.

    Prove it.

Works here too. Do the Google search. The reality is that homeschooling is superior even if you close your eyes and shut your ears to the facts.

Is this the sort of critical thinking you are touting?

For someone who complains about perpetuating ignorance, @Arkanis you're doing a fine job of it in this thread.

souce: Academic Achievement of Homeschool Students: A Review of Peer-Reviewed Research - (nheri.org)

ETA: (which is really just a nice summary of this scholarly article: Full article: A systematic review of the empirical research on selected aspects of homeschooling as a school choice (tandfonline.com) )

You really don't know much about Conservatives, Homeschooling, or the results, but here you are attacking them.

    Here are some Homeschooling facts:

    • From 2019 to the fall of 2020, the percentage of homeschooled students changed from 3.4% to 9%.
    • 67% of the homeschooled students successfully graduate from college.
    • 25% of the homeschooled students have enrolled a grade above their recommended grade as per age level.
    • 98% of the home-educated students engage in an average of 5 activities outside their homes.
    • Homeschooled students tend to perform above average on their ACTs and SATs.
    • In these standard achievement tests, the homeschooled students average between 15% and 30% more points than the students attending public schools, notwithstanding the parents’ income and education.
    • Homeschooled students average 72 points more than the nationwide mean performance in SATs.
    • The average performance of homeschoolers is 22.8 out of 36 points compared to the national average of 21.
Why people like you would want to deprive these children of a better learning environment that is embraced by their parents is amazing and telling. To the Left it is an attack on their ideology. It's more important that these children are indoctrinated with Leftist nonsense than to receive an education. Also, the Democratic Party makes more $ with higher Public School attendance. Homeschooling cuts into a huge part of the Democratic Party's donations from Teachers' Unions.

The great news is that homeschooling is now growing and growing at a faster than ever pace. More and more children are receiving a superior education through homeschooling and the trend continues to grow.

There are a lot of parallels between @Arkanis' response in this thread and the leftist media's response to Musk's offer to buy Twitter. Both display a deep-seated distrust of regular folks saying / doing what they want without "supervision".

It is also a great way to pass on reading, writing and figuring.

You know, the homeschooled are going to be the bosses. The public schoolers the worker bees.

ROFL! There you go everyone. This is what the Leftist think Homeschooling is. They have no clue, yet here they are criticizing it. That's not how it works.

How do you explain higher test scores (not graded by parents) on SAT's, better college performance, and all with more activities?

What is the educational value of CRT? How does CRT prepare a kid to succeed in life? I'll tell you what it does, it sends every kid home at the end of the day knowing if they're the oppressed or oppressors of things they never did or had happen to them. The left is damn near suicidal over using proper pro nouns so people don't get offended, yet here they are laying guilt trips on kids who never did anything wrong.

Regarding all that gender nonsense, when I went to school there were just boys and girls and we didn't need teachers telling us which was which, we kinda figured that out for ourselves, Playboy magazine helped out a lot. These days kids will be able to recite the 782 (and growing) genders but have zero skills that will benefit them in life. Look at the infamous failing schools in Baltimore, the last thing they should be concerned with is race and gender hustling. In fact, it's parents in school systems like Baltimore who should be going bonkers at school board meetings and demanding to know why kids are being taught stuff that will not improve their lives.

This is definitely the most ignorant post in this thread (and it wasn't without some competitors that made a decent attempt). Thanks for the laugh @9royhobbs .

Because you think I haven't learned anything from talking to the Conservatives on this forum over the past 10 years?

COVID was a game changer in terms of homeschooling, as safety was the main issue for families who kept their children at home.

But once the pandemic is finally behind us, homeschooling will become an issue again for Conservatives who essentially want to 'protectM their children from "creeping liberal propaganda" in public schools.

Do you have examples or proof? What you described is more likely to happen with liberals than anyone else, especially the hatred part. Remember, the only reason many on the left voted for Biden was because of their extreme hatred for the other guy.

While some people may be capable of being a homeschool teacher, few would be qualified for high school level, i.e., advanced algebra and calculus, and a number of other courses that require some expertise.
