I think asteroid mining is within reach with our technology.
Extracting metals from asteroids can certainly make it easier to place permanent settlements on close objects, like moon.

As for I can understand, Russian warships haven't got an IDS [Integrated Defensive System] like all NATO units have got.
It seems [maybe I'm right, maybe I'm wrong ... one never knows] that on Russian warships the efficiency of defense systems depends on humans, that is to say on the level of attention of the operators.

If this is true, Russians suffer of a remarkable technological gap with reference to NATO navies.

Russia's mighty fleet of outdated ships being turned into future scuba diving attractions must be crushing to some people who have long harbored delusions of Russian military superiority even over NATO forces. I can only imagine.

This war is increasing NATO navies self confidence.
Even Italian navy now knows that it could win [what?] a sea battle against the Russian navy.

But ... we have to differentiate: Russian surface navy units are not exceptional ... while Russian submarines have got some numbers.

Also Italian journalists in Ukraine [also in Russian controlled areas] haven't got confirmations about this lucky hit by Ukrainians.
I've seen a short video, but it can be this or that.

yeah....I'm still not convinced.....I was looking at AIS Maritime Traffic monitor earlier today and in the area that this incident is supposed to have happened are two mobile drilling platforms...

I wonder if the ship already sank and no one can visually find it on the surface of the water. Or, if it was an overcast day.

More like asymmetrical warfare - man portable anti-tank and aircraft weapons along with anti ship missiles and drones - are ripping through 20th century hardware and tactics like **** through a goose.

The modern battlefield just changed as drastically as it did in 1861, 1914, and 1939.

If it sank fast....then that tub must've been cracked in two real quick and sank like a rock.

    Maybe.

Western armies have been aware of this issue since the Hezbollah war in 2006. The value of air power against shipping has been clear since 1940-41, the power of SAMs since 1973 & MANPADS since the Soviet occupartion of Afghanistan. Despite this large navies remain irreplaceable to power projection and NATO-style air power is still a dominant force on the battlefield.

We need to be careful extrapolating from particular cases. During the Spanish Civil War many observers watching Italian & Republican tank forces in battle came away with questions about the value of massed tanks on the battlefield. German observers decided that neither side was competent enough to draw any such conclusions. Similarly I'd want to unpick all the elements of Russian failure before writing off tanks or ships.

For instance, there is evidence that the Moskva didn't have its radar functioning properly. Can't imagine any USN or NATO unit hanging around a combat zone without the radar doing its job. Likewise Russian ground forces have been woeful on so many levels it is difficult to know what conclusions to draw. I'm looking forward to some of the analysis that will emerge in time.

While I can't attest to its accuracy or whether or not it has been manipulated, there is some drone footage circulating of a ship that looks a LOT like the Makarov very much on fire. It isn't possible to make out the ship's number, and I supposed fakes are possible, but I am starting to lean toward 'likely' on this one.

If the war lasts until the end of the year Russia might not have any combat vessels bigger than a patrol boat left in the Black Sea. And against a nation without a functioning navy or airforce. Give NATO a week and that fleet wouldn't exist.

Quite possible....that it may drag to the end of the year....or further.

What's foreseeable if it does is more than half of conventional Russki military destroyed....100k conscripts or more dead....an entire generation of younger Russian conscripts traumatized....for most of their life....surviving on some welfare programs since they won't be of any use to society.

And Dwarfstan hopefully hanging from a lamppost ....along with his bi**hdog Lukashenka.

The confiscated $$$ from frozen Mafialand assets won't be nearly enough to cover costs of rebuilding....and forget about Muscovia coughing up....they know to destroy...not rebuild anything.....they're sanctioned to hell for the next 20 yrs...they'll be lucky to survive themselves.
