The bill did nothing to solve the problem. Just throwing more money at the FDA.

Funny how you skip right over facts.

What you call "facts" are Republican political arguments to keep the problem in existence so they can use it for political purposes. I think they picked the wrong fight, because denying formula from babies reflects quite poorly on them and they supporters. It makes them look like baby-haters.

So you think throwing more money at the FDA would get more formula to mothers in need? Does the FDA make formula?

It was the FDA who shut down the formula production to begin with.

I think a Congressionally signed treaty might be a bit tougher to overcome, but it should be looked at...

If I were Canada, I'd be a little wary..... We insist on everything being American made, then come a-begging when American made doesn't work for something...

Although I'm sure Canada would come through for us, as they always do...

You are simply parroting the GOP talking point that all it is is just "throwing money" and nothing else. Fortunately there were quite a few Republicans who agreed the problem needed to be solved and voted for the bill (which passed).

You didn't answer my question. How would giving the FDA more money solve the formula shortage that the FDA created?

So you see this as a government issue? It’s the FDA and the government who should address and fix the issue? How did babies survive before formula I wonder?

provides $28 million in funding to the Food and Drug Administration for inspections of formula manufactured at foreign plants and to prevent shortages stemming from supply chain disruptions.
    ENDSNIP

28 Million? With an M? How much "pork" can be in a bill of 28 Million???

I find it hard to believe they even need a bill for an amount that small.... I bet that amount is underneath the couch cushions in Nancy's office...

It's right in the OP... allowing foreign formula to be checked by the FDA before we allow it to be used..

    Geez... it's not that complicated.

And believing the FDA created this is like blaming Boeing for 9/11, BTW....

If you think its all about "giving money" and nothing else, then so be it. I tire of talking to people who simply repeat everything their political leaders say.

The recall of baby formula was not initiated by the FDA, as you might have been told. The manufacturer did it on their own and they also shut down their plant without being ordered to by FDA.

The FDA shut production down, but you're questioning why anyone wants them to fix the problem? Can production just choose on their own to continue and tell the FDA to leave?

You're not the first person who keep asking why anyone is waiting for the government to fix the issue, but you fail to mention that it was the government who created the issue.

So the FDA, who are the ones who shut down the production plants to being with, needs 28 million to approve foreign formula? And you think this sounds right?

The FDA didn’t shut down production. Abbot unsafe manufacturing practices shut the plant down.

Are you saying we shouldn’t ensure the safety of the formula? Should we just not have any inspections whatsoever?Buyer beware?

Go back to the days when ketchup was invented to cover the smell of rancid meat?

Its almost like you are ok with Abbott selling formula with dangerous bacteria. It’s all the FDA fault Abbott is a ***** company with no regard to the consumer.

True, although the threat of an FDA ordered shutdown was probably on the horizon.

Still, it's always better to take the lead instead of having the government walk you through it....

No, they did not. The manufacturer shut down the plan on their own. Read up about things, don't just repeat everything you hear from your political leaders.

If there is even a distant possibility that babies are dying from consuming your formula (which is what it looked like), then you better shut down ASAP, or you'll be going out of business very quickly and be called a baby-killer.

Sounds 100% right.... Even though I don't, and never have, used baby formula (as a parent), I don't want substandard formula imported into the USA.

    Why do you??

So you believe the FDA needing 28 million to hire new workers solves the formula shortage, then you are part of the problem. No point in discussing this with you any further.

They had already shut it down on their own. Also, the reopening was pending a court approval in Michigan, not FDA

https://fortune.com/2022/05/19/baby-formula-shortage-fda-abbott-plant-reopening/#:~:text=Abbott Nutrition voluntarily shut down, products produced at the site.

The ongoing crisis has revealed that the baby formula industry in the U.S. is dominated by just a few major manufacturers. That means that a shutdown of a single facility can have major consequences for the ability for people to buy baby formula around the country.

Abbott Nutrition voluntarily shut down its Sturgis facility on Feb. 17 in response to several reports between Sept. 2021 and Feb. 2022 of children falling ill or dying after consuming formula products produced at the site.

Nobody advertised this as being the only piece of solving the current formula shortage, nor how the FDA would use this money....

    Bill Summary

    SNIP
Specifically, the bill provides appropriations for the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to (1) address the current shortage of FDA-regulated infant formula and certain medical foods in the United States; and (2) prevent future shortages, including by taking the steps that are necessary to prevent fraudulent products from entering the U.S. market.
    ENDSNIP

It's one part of a complete strategic plan.... something the MAGA party used to be able to handle back when they were the GOP....
