Video and the "manifesto" online immediately providing a lot of headline-grabbing information to report rather than only basic information available over time. Apparent motive linked (correctly or not) to widely discussed socio-political issues rather than apparent motive linked to a foreign conflict most Americans don't even know or care about. Other things that can effect the general scale of coverage in general, which may or may not have been involved here include; the timing of the incident and it becoming known, how and when any official statements are made, the availability of publish-quality images of suspects, offenders or the scene, the "saleability" of those images (e.g. a professional school picture of an attractive teenage girl tends to get more coverage than a blurry snap of an average, unemployed, middle-aged man), the extent and quality of local media coverage (as it is routinely blindly copied by national and international media).
