Wait, why does it matter that it was a handgun?

Most liberals are lying, they want to ban guns for regular people. On the other hand, they want elites like Michael Bloomberg to be protected by security armed with guns. After Katrina liberal politicians brought in cops from other states to go door to door in New Orleans confiscating guns. Homes of the rich in New Orleans were protected by a private military company (Blackwater) armed with AR-15s. For the left, as noted by Orwell, all animals are equal. But some are more equal than others.

All liberals should demand the repeal of the 2nd Amendment. Put up or shut up. And demand your liberal heroes pledge not to use security armed with guns.

That’s not constitutional and the law already said he could not have a hand gun at that age so the law obviously didn’t work

    What bullshit.

Those conventions have loads of security. Security that isn't feasible at all elementary schools.

If you want to make a comparison, try one that's actually comparable.

And I wouldn’t want to live in any one of those countrys. You can add Australia to that list.

None of the popular gun control measures would ban them. I know I wouldn’t support that.

These are gun nuts who live in a country where it's extremely easy to get a gun and kill lots of people.

So, we agree that disarming civilians - as Republicans do in their conventions - increases the level of security.

Does that mean you would support banning something like AR15s? I'm just wondering why you think that would help when clearly handguns can be used to the same effect...

I hope that's not the case, but I'm concerned you may be right. I have a hard time imagining someone covering that much open terrain if law enforcement were really present and determined to stop him. If so, this is a prime case of why shooting fleeing felons is and should remain legal.

Live updates: Texas elementary school shooting (cnn.com)

Eighteen children and one teacher are the latest victims of a largely American phenomona.
There's been about thirty school shootings this year.
And we would expect about 110,000 Americans in general will be shot by the end of the year.

Quote CNN, 'GOP Sen. Thom Tillis warned Democrats against having a “reflexive reaction” in the wake of the Texas school shooting that left 15 people dead, by trying to pass laws that would impinge on Second Amendment rights, saying he is confident in the coming days it will be learned that there were “signs” the 18-year-old shooter was “at risk.

I don't watch TV but I suppose there are, right now, two typical American reactions
1 - don't touch our guns (instead, buy more guns)
    2 - let's examine the shooter (as if this is a one-off)

as i read this thread i'm struck by just how many people would like to ban this, that and the other thing for the sake of the illusion of security. can you ban crazy? can you ban criminality? these are the things you should be worried about, not disarming a predominantly peaceful population. do you want to live in a free society? do you want to come and go as you please, to say what you want and believe what you want? these things come at a price. freedom is neither free nor safe. the genie cannot be put back in the bottle. we cannot magically make gun disappear. what we can do is deal with criminals and the disturbed appropriately.

i find it odd that the many of the very same people who want to ban guns are the ones who make it so difficult to treat the disturbed. you want liberty for the crazies, but you want chains for the rest of us. what kind of twisted mind believes in this sort of nonsense?

It's hard to know what's legitimate or not in the early stages of reporting on events like this, but this is purportedly the shooter:

If so, this whole thing is going to go down the memory hole pretty quick.

He has to protect himself from the Republican gun nuts who want to kill him.

I think people are becoming too sensitive because they’re overly protected, maybe not this shooter, but others are. Kids can’t be bullied - since when? Bullying occurs everywhere on the planet and it happens to literally every one. And if a person is never bullied then the first time is he doesn’t know how to handle it and explodes. I was bullied like everyone else, it toughens people up.

Then there are the participation trophies. When I played hockey, football, baseball, golf, softball and billiards, if you didn’t come in first place you friggin lost, period. Losing teaches people 1. How to lose, 2. To work harder. Getting trophies for not even trying doesn’t help anyone. And when the kids grow up they don’t know how to lose.

Oh, don’t get me started on feelings. Well, I am started. When I was a kid every insult imaginable about your mom, dad, sister, race, religion, etc, was hurled at you…and this was by your friends. Because of that, there’s no slur or insult that will hurt my feelings. We all see how the left hurls insults at the drop of a hat and I believe it’s because they know they can’t handle harsh words so they think we can’t. They were over protected as kids and now think words can actually hurt people, even total strangers.

So stop raising kids to be sissies, snowflakes and professional victims. Let them know the only way to stop losing is to work harder. Remember the occupy Wall Street idiots? They wanted people to hand them $100k jobs without working for them. Don’t let your kid grow up to be one of them.

Learning to lose teaches character and coping skills. I strongly believe the people who can’t cope with problems are the ones who become shooters. So again, don’t over protect kids, let them lose, let them have their feelings hurt and have to work hard for something, it worked for us, didn’t it?

There is no country in the world where there are more shootings than in the US.

    Not even close.

You talk about crazy, are you claiming that there are more madmen in the US than anywhere else in the world?

When something bad happens there's this tendency to want to rush to do something to help fix it. It's better to do nothing, than do the wrong thing. Would gun control really help with this kind of thing? I doubt it, but the details matter. An in-depth analysis of the shooter may indeed reveal factors that could help. What is it about our society that causes this? What could cause somebody to prefer to kill themselves a murder a bunch of little kids rather than live?

Absolutely not. I absolutely did not say that.

Having lots of security increases security.

If the parents of Robb Hight School had raised their children properly, 18 of them would be less dead today....

In the MAGA world, one can use the most twisted logic to avoid blaming the proliferation of guns in this country.
