We are entering the age when a gun can be 3-D printed by a relatively cheap device. Some chemical bombs can be created using household appliances. And even with absence of guns we can see mass stabbing events in other countries. Pushing a constitutional amendment to limit our 2nd amendment would require ratification by 2/3 of the states - not something that is feasible anyway. I would be among those who are against such an idea.
We live in a heavily militarized society. Why not just implement a draft system for 1 year of service for all 18 year olds with options to join some form of non-deployable (what I mean is that the service must be done close to home) national guard or an option to serve in some form of community service?

ONLY the Republicans almost to a man (or woman) back gun "rights" so vehemently. Gun advocates are a BIG part of their "base". If people turn against them they will NOT be able to win.

Be careful about their successors, if they seem to be courting the votes of gun advocates DON'T VOTE FOR THEM AND VOTE THEM OUT TOO.

The gun lobby AND the gun advocates MUST be forcibly removed from our politics. We CAN do that with our votes.

I believe we should establish gun control laws as soon as we fully enforce and win the battle on drugs (no more deaths or crimes from illegal drug sales and abuse) and on immigration (all illegal aliens are deported and the borders are fully secured by whatever manner necessary).

That is when we establish gun control laws. That, and when we amend the constitution.

Since we don't have a federal gun rights amendment, IMO, even though SCOTUS says we do have one in the 2ND, have a new federal gun rights amendment or not federal gun rights amendment depending on the outcome of the vote on the new amendment.

They typically have armed guards. This was an elementary school, so the kids were 5-10 yrs old. You think its a good idea to ask kids that young to engage in a gun fight against mass killers? Teachers? Most elementary school teachers are young women, so not a good idea. Texas has LOT of mass killings, including in schools, and their politicians always talk about "doing something", but as soon as some time passes, nothing is done. In 2018 there was a shooting in Santa Fe school, and 13 kids were killed, and they talked about "hardening" schools, meaning they wanted to make it impossible for people to bring guns to schools, and they even had a 40 point plan for it, but nothing was done. Heck, this guy walked in with a RIFLE. Red flag proposals were dismissed by the gun advocates. Nothing will be done, and I wish they'd spare us from the crocodile tears and "thoughts and prayers" nonsense. They need to just admit they are afraid to act because they think it would cost them votes.

Many here do not understand what "Gun Free Zone" means. It is an area where one os prohibited from carrying a gun, even if one has a permit. It is not a declaration that the zone is free of guns. The purpose is deterrence. If you are caught in a gfz with a gun, with or without a permit, you can be prosecuted for it, even if you don't take it out of the holster or fire it.

 

Yeah...we saw those guns save lives today, didn't we.

Get rid of yer guns. Or keep them and see more kids die. You choose.

I don't believe your last solution will even BEGIN to work and might just as easily make the problem worse.

I wonder if it would help for schools to start offering mental health classes. Adolescence is such a hard time anyway, and bullying can push the vulnerable kids over the edge. Kids don't really know how to cope with life anymore. There has been a breakdown in social norms, and they feel lost and alone, and they don't know where to turn for guidance. Sometimes I think this entire country needs counseling.

A gun is highly stealable, transportable and open to anyone, sans or disturbed, to kill dozens within minutes. Including five year olds.
Yet you have a cohort of right wing fools who reject abortion but support instruments that can easily kill infant children by any unbalanced person at large in the community.
It is hypocrisy of the highest order and reveals à lack of national moral clarity. They don't want to kill unborn children but struggle off killing infants and refuse to remove the instruments that allowed those deaths.
Doublethink justified by specious reasons to support a single outdated amendment to the constitution, and the only winners are the officials of the NRA. Millionaires all.

 

And nothing to keep them safe besides our existence. The USSR at the time would have taken Canada a long time ago if it wasn’t for us bordering them and having to go over Alaska to get to them.

 

This country does not need a mental health classes.

It needs sticker laws to keep guns out of the hands of crazy people.

 

We've known these places are soft targets as well as these mental midget that are purposely targeting them and no amount of new gun legislation will make an impact for another 2 decades. We have a chance... right now... to protect our children. We have BILLIONS of unused COVID funds for schools that we could 100% immediately reallocate to securing our schools.

Instead of sending BILLIONS to other nations to fight their wars, we should be building institutions here to treat our mentally ill as we are in a pandemic of mental illness in this country and is rapidly getting worse

That's the shame of this situation here as democrats will chose to fight a battle on guns instead of actually finding solutions to protect innocence. Our schools could be protected with non-partisan support with a swift move of the pen by reallocating COVID funds to securing schools, however Democrats will chose to weaponize our children as hostages to a gun debate.

 

Guns mainly save lives from people being assaulted by other guns. If our police and military were the ONLY legal guns we have think of how much safer our police would be.
