Cheney and Pence take the fight to Trump, from Georgia to Wyoming
Jon Ward · Chief National Correspondent
    Mon, May 23, 2022, 12:36 PM

The battle for the Republican Party is entering a new phase, and Rep. Liz Cheney sounded the first shot of it on Sunday evening.

“We face a threat we have never faced before: a former president attempting to unravel our constitutional republic. At this moment we must all summon the courage to stand against that,” Cheney, a Wyoming Republican and Donald Trump’s chief antagonist in the GOP, said in a speech Sunday night.

Cheney delivered the remarks at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library after the institution presented her with a Profile in Courage award. She was one of five people given the award, along with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and three other American officials from both parties who came under intense attack by Trump and his supporters after the 2020 election.

At the very least, Trump has made politics interesting again. The insanity of his lies, the Big Lie that just won't die, the treasonous assault on the Capitol... Everything Trump has said and instigated, past and present, promises to make this election and the next one just as charged with energy and fraught with concern among the voting public as 2020 was.

I'm heartened to see Republicans campaigning against the Big Lie and the overarching threat to our democracy as a whole that is posed by those who repeat it. It truly is dangerous since people believe that Democrats have been cheating in the elections will cheat or sanction cheating among Republicans, and/or enact or support laws that further restrict voting in a way designed to help Republicans and harm Democrats in future elections.

I never thought I would see the day when a Cheney started looking good.

Cheney is an interesting figure. Conservative but not a Trump window licker. I wonder how many of them are left out there? And the moderate non-Trump Republicans are a rare breed as well.

Of course, whether or not Cheney is a conservative depends on who you ask. To most Trump supporters(though not all I'm sure), your conservatism is based entirely on your support for Donald Trump, a man who is not and has never been a conservative for a second of his life.

I'd be interested to know what you think Trump has done that is liberal.

That wasn't what I meant. My point was that Cheney has been a conservative her entire time in government. Trump was a Democrat before he switched to the Republicans because the Democrats wouldn't take him.
Trump will be whoever he needs to be to get the adoration and attention that his every action is intended to produce. He has no allegiance to any ideology or party.

All Cheney has really done is not be a Trump supporter and all of a sudden she's a RINO instead of the conservative she's always been?

Mike Pence b**** finally dropped. But, he's known for the ability to tuck them in in the future.
Liz's are simply too big to tuck or ignore.

Liz doesn't look like a good candidate in Wyoming. But the national opinion is where folks like Jon Ward are designing this narrative for. Liz doesn't have a shot in conservative circles. Pence is considered damaged goods and no one really takes him seriously. But Yahoo also has an agenda and that's what we have to consider.

When democrats start looking for appealing republicans, that says quite a lot about their party these days.

Give them time, they'll hate Cheney again. Their admiration of certain Republicans at certain times is always political opportunism.

People praising Cheney does not mean they suddenly like her policy views and votes. They praise her because she's one of the few Republicans who isn't licking Trump's boots. I too feel she deserves respect for sticking to her guns on this. With the way most elected Republicans turn the guns on their own party whenever a member expresses non-loyalty to Trump, it's a brave action, and it may cost her seat.

I am no more in favor of Cheney's conservative views now than I was at any point. I just have a bit of newfound respect for her character. As I do for any Republican who doesn't bow to Trump.

I admire Republicans who stand up for their conservatism even when it's unpopular in the party. My comment is just dismissive of leftists' suddenly have hero worship for Republicans they can temporarily use as tools.

I'm not even sure you can say they can use them as tools. Many of the anti-Trump Republicans are resigning or in danger of getting voted out.

I think resigning is their best option. I will not mourn the death of a passive, submissive establishment Republican party.

Too funny. Mr & Mrs Rogers of “It’s a beautiful day in the neighborhood” take on the uncivilized hoards of democrats fraudsters.
The republicans don’t need a Mr.Rogers when they have a Trump the Barbarian ready to slay the democrat swamp in their stable!

Based on this thread her biggest support comes from democrats!

For a rare time, I agree with you.

I want Trump to remain the GOP poster boy for a long time to come and I want his detractors within the party to be publicly dragged through the mud by the MAGA.

Trump is the most formidable machine for getting out the moderate and liberal vote this country has ever had.

I hope - and it's very possible - Republicans gain 5 or 6 Senate seat and the 40+ House seats in November.
