On Tuesday, the nation heard incredibly compelling testimony about the pressure placed on state and local officials by Donald Trump in an attempt to overturn the results of the 2020 election. As Brandi Buchman reported, the testimony showed how Trump personally leaned on these officials, how his bullying opened both them and their families to threats, and how Trump was at the center of a scheme to subvert democracy using a slate of fake electors in multiple states.
If it seems familiar, it’s because what the select committee is doing is what the prosecution does at every murder trial: Show the jury a body on the ground, identify the weapon, then prove who was wielding the knife. They’re giving the nation the body of the crime, the tools enlisted to make it happen, and both motive and means of execution.

And now Republicans are sorry. Not sorry that Jan. 6 happened—sorry that they didn’t corrupt the select committee when they had the chance.
This is a trial at which Trump has refused to testify and done everything he possibly can to keep all the others involved in the conspiracy from raising their right hand. And the truth is that every Republican in Washington, D.C., and Mar-a-Lago thought McCarthy had done the right thing at the time, because “illegitimate witch hunt” was a well-established theme they could sell to Trump’s base.
Except Trump’s base isn’t watching the committee hearings. Everyone else is. And Trump is discovering that when you’re on trial for attempting to murder democracy, refusing to put on a defense isn’t a great strategy.
Expect the “blame Kevin” chorus to only grow louder. After all, “scapegoat” is McCarthy’s dedicated role.

    This is truly hilarious.
Trump and the GOP whining about the actions of the 1/6 Panel, after turning down the chance to have more GOP Members on the 1/6 Panel.
    And, now Trump's Line Is:
    It's McCarthy's Fault...
    Even though:
the truth is that every Republican in Washington, D.C., and Mar-a-Lago thought McCarthy had done the right thing at the time, because “illegitimate witch hunt” was a well-established theme they could sell to Trump’s base.
    Just Wow...:smdh:

Anyone who tries to claim this was just a rally, then a few guys trespassed, ignore the whole fake electors scheme and what the plan was.

How many more threads could we possibly have on 1/6 and the 2020 election. How do these even qualify as current events? This stuff belongs in the opinion forum.

Did you really just ask why this is a current event, with the hearings going on right now and Trump very likely to try and run again in 2024?

    Trump Lashing Out...
Won't commit to endorsing McCarthy for Speaker...
Trump appears so incensed by McCarthy’s move that he’s refusing to endorse the Republican leader for Speaker of the House should the GOP retake control of that chamber in this year’s midterm elections. In a recent interview with conservative talk show host Wayne Allyn Root, Trump said he’d endorsed McCarthy for re-election, but not for the speakership.

Poor Kevin, I guess flying down to Mar a Lago to kiss Trump's ring after 1/6 wasn't enough to garner the everlasting love of the Trump party king. He should have known better that Trump's only loyalty is to himself.

His supporters will completely gloss over the obvious fact that the Orange Stain isn't whining about being innocent. He is have a hissy fit because there aren't enough spineless "yes" men on the committee. What does that spell? GUILTY.

Who would have thunk it? The Orange Stain is petty? Say it ain't so. /smdh

QN, he openly put a target on his own VP in broad daylight and reiterated that Pence deserved to be hanged a few times after that.

Anybody that believed Trump honored loyalty is probably not able to function in free society. They would need 24/7 care.

I was wondering when the circular firing squad would commence. While Cheney may want to make this all about Trump it’s really about the Republican Party.

They’ve got State and Federal Representatives tied up in this mess and while it’s a no-brainer a handful should have already been tossed from office (those that sought pardons) there’s a couple hundred more on very shaky ground.

It’s going to get real interesting when the names are dropped and they’ve got to decide between the Party and their own rear ends.

The months ahead at the very least are going to be interesting.

And likely to win because democrats are busy playing the role of petulant children instead of effectively governing. Intead of returning the adults to power as was promised we have substituted a bunch of petulant whiny children and corrupt old men, who have substituted political malice and ill will for for adulthood.

I actually don't disagree with you there, for the most part. Though I don't think Trump is a shoe-in. Ron DeSantis maybe, but not Trump.

And it's true that these hearings are being hyped in a way that it wouldn't necessarily be if the economy was better and the Democrats had some accomplishments to tout.

I don't recall Big Fat Don complaining when McCarthy initially pulled all his picks for the committee, took his ball, and went home. But the Fat One now needs a target to vent his anger at. Because his epic corruption is being exposed in granular detail and he can't do anything to stop it.

And the hearings aren't persuading much of anyone since the only people who appear to be watching are those who already think Trump is the devil.

He actively pushed for it https://www.washingtonexaminer.com/news/trump-democratic-trap-riot-commission

“Republicans in the House and Senate should not approve the Democrat trap of the January 6 Commission,” Trump said in a statement from his Save America PAC on Tuesday. “It is just more partisan unfairness and unless the murders, riots, and fire bombings in Portland, Minneapolis, Seattle, Chicago, and New York are also going to be studied, this discussion should be ended immediately.”

Trump added, “Republicans must get much tougher and much smarter, and stop being used by the Radical Left. Hopefully, Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy are listening!”

There's no need to watch the actual hearings when they are summarized in the news. That's where the bulk of the people will be getting their information.

Honestly not sure who would actually want to sit around and watch a hearing, no matter what the topic was.

I agree to a certain extent that the people actually tuning in are probably already on the anti-Trump side, but as I said, there's no need to actually tune in to get the important info. The live testimony from witnesses and administration officials is no small thing though. Trump really did try and pull a fast one on the country and that at least should not be forgotten while he is still around and capable of returning to the White House.

I especially love the part in the OP where it says “everyone else is [watching]”

When they had 20 million views for the first episode and it’s been cut in half twice now? What are we at for views on the last trainwreck they had? Lol
