Well, so long as the survey is somehow guaranteed to be kept anonymous, it doesn't seem too bad.
I think they want to identify beliefs at specific colleges, not identify specific individuals.

I don't care what they want to do. It's purpose should be thwarted . Fortunately college students are creative thinkers, and they will take care of this just fine.

If they were creative thinkers, they would not believe everything they are told, hook, line and sinker.

That is exactly what this proposed policy is trying to fight against.

Maybe only 1% will organize together in some creative way. Which won't interfere with the wider purpose of these surveys.

Universities Increasingly Require Loyalty Oaths To "Diversity, Equity ...

"Universities Increasingly Require Loyalty Oaths To "Diversity, Equity and Inclusion" To Be Hired "commitment to merit as the basis for hiring and tenure continues to erode as they increasingly demand adherence to progressive ideology"

I'm glad FL is gathering data. We assume there is a real dearth of viewpoint diversity in academia, but, let's get some real world data. Great Job Florida!

At least they're asking in the interest of diversity rather than jut banning all conservative voices.

    Waste of money.
Educators will round file the survey.
Students will give bull crap answers for fun.
Legislators will present that ANY answer supports their position.

Stupid waste of time and money.

You are clearly confused as, for one thing, I supplied no "link," so it is mystery, what it was you were looking at. Nor, however, do you provide one. What is your basis, for saying that "there is nothing in the legislation?" Those words would suggest that you have actually read it, yourself, about which, I have my doubts. If, though, you had read it, why would you not have provided that link, to support your assertion?

The irony-- and it is an hypocrisy, as well-- here, is that it is you, who seems to be mangling the meanings of words, like Play Doh: of course people can ignore surveys, but can schools ignore the "surveys," sanctioned by the legislature, and DeSantis? As I had said, this is the fulcrum of the issue, vis a vis your claim: on which side of this question resides the weight of truth, makes all the difference. Yet your first reply, here, does not answer that question with anything but your own bluster, and personal-sounding criticisms.

As far as mangling the words law and decree-- that is, once again, your mix-up. The "decrees," to which I had been referring, had come directly from DeSantis, during the pandemic, and were aimed at preventing cities from having their own, stricter rules, about masking and crowd size (as on the beaches), than the state's rules-- do you remember? The potential fascism, now, is not simply in the legislature- approved survey, but primarily, how the executive branch, the governor's
office, might use this information, to punish schools, or force them to comply with conditions which, once again, would come straight from DeSantis, not the legislature. And none of this is part of the legislation, but it will all potentially be within DeSantis' power, albeit a misuse of the power of that office.

So, you see, it is you who is either faulty in his understanding of how this legislation works, so what is the objection to it, so what it is I have said about it, in relation to the governor; or, you are Play Dohing your own words, to mis-portray this "survey," and the autocratic element in its potential repercussions. Just because the basis for fascist abuse of the information collected, was approved by the legislature, does not, or should not give Gov. DeSantis carte blanche, in what he does with the survey data; that is a glaring flaw in this legislation: not defining its purpose, how it should be, and should not be, used. I will note that just because Russia's laws are produced by a "legislature," does not make them any less, in truth, the decrees of Putin. Likewise, many laws of Nazi Germany, were merely the puppet legislature giving Hitler whatever he wanted-- until, that is, Hitler removed the pretense, by dissolving the representative, parliamentary part, of government.

I just read it, and there is nothing about it being optional, whether or not students and faculty fill out the "survey." So your opinion is based on an unsupported assumption.

The suggestion, from the article, seems to me, to be that completion of surveys will be required. What gives me that impression, is that, in the very title of the article, are the words, "requiring students, faculty be asked their political beliefs." To say that being required to ask, is not the same as requiring those who are asked, to answer, seems like the specious argument, playing games with words. Literally, you would be correct; but if that were the case, it would have been utter incompetence, on the part of the writer of the article, and his editor, to not make this clear, while using terms like "requiring," to suggest that this is not "optional."

There are two additional instances of the same implication:
    [Snip]

The legislation will require public universities to survey students and staff annually about their beliefs to assess “viewpoint diversity” on campuses.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) on Tuesday signed legislation mandating public colleges and universities survey students and faculty about their beliefs in an effort to promote intellectual diversity on campuses.
    [End]

So please, do not so discredit your own words and opinion, as to levy the charge of "fake news," at someone else's post, when you lack the "real news," which falsifies the other person's claim.

There's an hilariously hypocritical quote, from DeSantis, in the article:
    [Snip]

The legislation, which goes into effect July 1, also aims to ensure
students are being shown ideas that they “may disagree with or find uncomfortable.

    [End]

Didn't DeSantis also sign a bill, whose aim was to PREVENT the teaching of anything, in public grade school, which might make students "uncomfortable?"

This sets up an interesting, sociological experiment type of situation. Florida kids will be sheltered, in school, from any information which they may find upsetting. But, if they stay in state, for college, they will immediately be doused with information that would make uncomfortable, even out of state students who, to that point, had not been so snowflake- coddled. I find the imagery of this playing out, to be humorous, albeit traumatic for the freshmen Floridians, sent into shocked disillusionment (and probably taken advantage of, by the out of staters).

Of course, in reality, both these Republican laws are just bullshit legislation, to make parents feel better, and to "virtue- signal," as the Right, so often likes to condemn the Left, for doing. Oh, and also to let DeSantis get public colleges, by the balls, so he'll know exactly which dean to threaten with cuts in funding, if he doesn't squash any student protest (or faculty reaction), occasioned by whatever new, controversially regressive move, the governor has in mind; sort of the way DeSantis tried to keep Disney's right to free speech, in check (even if he kind of flubbed, that one).

Requiring that a survey be conducted, and requiring that it be answered are two different things. And survey's, are just asking questions. And nothing in the bill says anything about being required to answer said survey. Only that one must be conducted. LINK: template 1..7 (flrules.org) Look through the bill yourself. LINK: _h0233er.docx (flsenate.gov)

The writer of that article, and his/her editor are not out to inform people. They're out to make money for their company. And controversy makes them far more money than not having controversy. Its not "incompetence" that is driving them. Its greed. At best.

    • This would be one of the few cases (currently the only one) where I, a strong DeSantis supporter, disagree vehemently with him.

Only members of the German Nazi party of WWII are fascists (and they're dead) and all others who 'claim the neo-Nazi mantle' are actually neofascists. When you call De Santis a neofascist, your definition for neofascism is the opposite of the definition of neofascism. In other words, your definition for neofascism is not only not the definition for neofascism but you're trying to redefine the definition for neofascism (like others are trying to redefine the definition for authoritarianism, for example) to mean the opposite of neofascism, for example.

Maybe that's why you're confused when you think De Santis is a neofascist?? Because De Santis' speech and thought disagrees with your speech and thought?? Maybe that's why you, at least, back the neofascist on the Jan. 6 committee Liz Cheney??

"The bill does not specifically say what will be done with survey results, but DeSantis suggested budget cuts could be imminent if universities and colleges are found to be “indoctrinating” students."

so if the school is too dem, they lose funding

if the school is too republican, it's fine

It sounds like the state of Florida is prevent indoctrinating of its students by teachers which would be the opposite of indoctrination, er, neofascism, er, discriminating based upon political beliefs. See, the political beliefs the state of Florida wants to avoid are teachers' political beliefs.

EDIT: Oh, and De Santis wants diversity of thought in Florida schools, too.

Your post is misinformation. Diversity of thought is what the state of Florida is trying to achieve.
