“An agreement between the Minneapolis Federation of Teachers union and the school district states that white teachers will be laid off before teachers of color, regardless of their seniority.

The agreement, which was reached to end a two-week teacher strike last spring, says that starting this school year, "if excessing a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the site, the district shall excess the next least senior teacher, who is not a member of an underrepresented population."

Excessing teachers is the process by which staff are reduced at a particular school due to a drop in enrollment, funding or other reasons.

The agreement further goes on to say that when reinstating teachers, "the District shall prioritize the recall of a teacher who is a member of a population underrepresented among licensed teachers in the district."”

I wonder how those idiot liberal white teachers feel now for “standing up against racism” on behalf of minorities for so long and now getting slapped with the reality that the minorities have no problem discriminating against them lol

Notice how nowhere is the least mention made to quality of the teacher? In my company, the engineers who suck are the first ones to be let go. Performance is the standard, not seniority. This is why our public schools are garbage, zero quality control. Sending your child to one is tantamount to child abuse. If you care about your child, home school or private school.

Actually, across America, white men are a minority when compared to women.

Please find the definition of “underrepresented population” as related to the contract.

Is it gender, race, creed, blond hair, purple eyelashes, people with moles on the left hand ?

 

I’d imagine that's something they must have defined in bargaining, it must be in there someplace.

 

They would all have to agree, otherwise, one dissent and no way that contract passes legal muster. I can't believe they actually put such language into the contract. This can be challenged quiet easily.

Which is racist. They’re picking people for their skin over their credentials. But I’ll be honest. I’m actually okay with it. If they would rather have the less experienced I’m sure another school will benefit while they lose. If they want to do that I’m okay. But you can’t say it’s not racist.

It doesn’t mention race, although that could play into it.
As I read it, it seeks to have the demographic of teacher match the demographics of the population. So if women are “over” represented in the teaching pool, they will lay off a woman rather than a man. If Black teachers are over represented they may lay off a Black teacher.

 

Please note the words "underrepresented population"
In à school population largely white, it will be the black teacher who is let go.
