Historians rate him as one of the worst.

He will drop from 3rd to 2nd worst in the future, and possibly the worst. It takes time for historians to put together a comprehensive understanding. Sometimes it takes a generation, or two. It also depends on how the decisions he made play out, in the future.

    Nope.

Technology keeps changing the battlefield. If you want to stay the best, you have to keep up. The massive armies of the past are gone, and will keep shrinking.

In a generation, you wouldn't want to be a ground pounder, seriously.

In a generation? What about now?

    I know.

Drones will keep improving, we will fielding artificial soldiers eventually. They don't sleep, they don't eat, and if you are boots on the ground, you will become burger in very short order.

That really has nothing to do with this topic though. The issue isn't drones or robots.

I swear this has always been a thing or at least there were programs like this that existed even back when I first joined. It's a decent starting point I guess if you can convince people to go to something like this. The problem is bigger than this though. If a person wants to join the military then they are usually disciplined enough to at least ensure they meet the weight and performance standards.

I guess that was the luxury of the previous generation, we have standards if you want to join us then meet them. So the driven young people would workout and improve themselves to be competitive to join. I'm not sure if we really want folks with such a weak mentality that they can't even be bothered to get in NORMAL shape on their own without a special program. I mean seriously the Army isn't looking for Olympic athletes here and the performance standards are well within reason for someone who even halfway cares about trying to get in shape.

"Prep courses" are for things like Navy SEAL BUD/S....The average middle school kid back in the day could pass the Army entrance physical back when kids did normal kid stuff like go outside and run around and play. But I guess in the modern era of massive obesity and sedentary lifestyles we need stuff like this to help kids out. My old age "damn kids" mentality is showing now I guess, but I have concerns over the type of new recruit that needs a fat camp to get themselves into normal (not even overly healthy) human weight before joining the ranks. If they can't even be bothered to manage that on their own what type of Soldiers are they going to make?

Well it seems their dedication to freedom and liberty only runs as deep as Fox News.

And did it occur to you accordingly that maybe kids see no reason to defend a country that would elect a puke like trump?

It seems likely to me the army isn't pushing this crap of its own will, but as a result of being pressured to do so by the bureaucracy from where its policy ultimately originates. If so, it would stand to reason that the army simply isn't allowed to make the necessary changes. 'Wokism' is simply more important than recruiting quotas or defense.

...its either that or defense is being deliberately sabotaged in a way we can't 'prove' its deliberate. This would be crazy conspiracy theory of course.

We don't need massive armies anymore. In fact, we need to downsize, because it's pretty obvious we are mostly interested in proxy fights now.

And tech is the reason why we can downsize, so it's entirely relevant.

I forgot to mention this before.

Sorry, this is more about demography than attitude..

Gen Z is a smaller cohort than the Millennials who are a smaller cohort than the Boomers. That means the Z kids are going to enjoy having business catering to them.

The guru for the money guys with the real power, behind Reagan, was a nutjob named Buchanon. He was a Southerner that like the old fashioned idea that everyone but the upper crust should be slaves, even if they weren't called slaves. That explains a LOT of what Reagan did, not that you know what he did.

That's not going to fly when there's a global bidding war for talent. It's coming.

We are going to need more tech because we have fewer kids, and they're going to be in great demand.

Well back in the day when kids did normal kid stuff we didn't have this kind of problem, but now, the problem is huge (pun intended). That's why I don't think the issue is simply about having so little self discipline that kids can't lose the weight before Basic. A lot of those kids may have been fat their whole lives and don't have any clue how to undo it. An Army prep course may be the first time that some of these people have eaten healthy or exercised. I think it's worth trying and at least collect data on it for a few years to see if it works or not.

Does this apply to only us or to others? I think both the Russians and Ukrainians wish they had massively larger militaries.

But don't worry about the downsizing. The fact that so few kids are eligible to enlist is doing the downsizing for us.

I'm not sure how you get that. Our military is going to shrink because we can't get recruits, not because of drones.

    I have to disagree.
You are right that no one gets out because of one brief of class. But it is not just one.
I have known a number of people who have gotten out because they are disgusted with the fact that the Army cares more about soldiers attending these types of training then they do about those same soldiers going to the range and doing their job.
Your claim that we really don’t care may be correct for your unit but I guarantee it is not Army wide. Many many people I know do care.

It’s not the class so much as the culture.
In theory the Army exists to go to foreign land and kill people and break stuff. Unfortunately recently more attention is paid to things like attendance at EO and SHARPs classes then if soldiers can actually do their job. If a 11B misses a few range days no one cares. If he misses his EO training that is something the commander will hammer his chain of command about. And soldiers recognize where the priorities are.

And for those MOSs that focus on combat that can be the difference between you living and you dying.

To pretend that Joe isn’t smart enough to realize that shift in culture is just at silly.

Then there was how things were before all the classes.

Which was pretty much the same. But with less time watching videos and simply doing other things. The day was not any shorter before those classes, most are still there for around 10 or so hours a day. We did not get off earlier 4 decades ago, we just had our days filled up in different ways. And it is only an hour or so a month on average.

Hell, wonder if they will quit their jobs in the "real world" when they realize they then have to do the same thing. More and more companies are now requiring such classes themselves, simply to avoid lawsuits. I can't think of a job I have had in the last 20 years that has not required it unless it was a sole proprietorship. Even Dollar Tree and Walmart require them, and to retake the same things every year (or more often if a newer course dropped).

I was one of those youngsters that wanted to join the military. I wanted to join for the discipline I needed it at that time in my life. There's no way this doesn't exist with Gen z. I think it's all the cucking of the military. The thing that gets young men to join is what it always was. Joining a brotherhood and becoming a man. Now it's all about expressing yourself and gender affirmation.

Dump the woke stupidity. Let it be a reprieve from that idiotic nonsense and advertise it as strength and power and masculinity, and just like that it'll likely come roaring back.

So some very, very sensitive snowflakes left the military. What's the downside there?

If someone is so sensitive that they're crying about "wokeness" -- that is, basic human decency -- you definitely don't want that snowflake in combat with you.

I honestly doubt that has much to do with it at all. If you want good reasons, Nightmare has already supplied them for you. No need to shoehorn unrelated things in.
