My understanding is the encryption are 500-600 years old (before modern irrigation or transportation) and they are in rivers under water except during extreme drought. Russia's doing fine ... Much of the primary objective has been taken - area along the black sea from Donbass to Crimea .. now relatively secure .. Odessa the only remaining access to the Sea under Ukraine control.

Not easy to take territory while keeping civilian casualties and infrastructure damage to a minimum ..

Nonsense, if I may so say so. Russia intervened in the Donbass and Crimea in 2014 and stopped the militias from ethnic cleansing there. In 2015 Russia intervened in Syria and stopped the US from overthrowing Assad. It then intervened this year, defeated the Ukrainians in every battle and is now developing a buffer zone in the east. That’s without conscription and fighting against all the weapons, money and advisors NATO is throwing in. That doesn’t sound like a weak army.

In Chechnya, Georgia, Syria, and now Ukraine the only tactic Russia has successfully been able to carry out is mass artillery attacks to destroy all civilian infrastructure while slowly inching forward. No, that is not "charging in" and is explicitly a slow methodical crawl while deliberately committing war crimes.

Everything for the last 30 years shows that is all the poorly trained, poorly equipped, and even more poorly lead Russia military is capable of. Fact.

Russia is currently in control of the majority of what they intend to occupy .. all the land along the Black Sea to Crimea .. only a small portion - Odesa - being left. . an hey perhaps Ukraine can negotiate and keep a little access to the Black Sea.

For the moment .. Russia is defending which is much easier to do than to take land all the way to Crimea.

Not even sure that Vlad wants Odesa that badely .. but would they want to advance the last little bit .. more tonnage could be applied to make things happen quicker .. less tender care of civilian casualties ... turn the place into rubble .. but Vlad in no Rush .. Well, that’s one way of puuting it.

The problem is, the US forces were not designed for the fights it now gets into. It was designed to face an enemy head on and beat an opponent with sheer numbers and force and why it loses when it tries to put boots on the ground. Since WW2, the US has lost every fight it has started except the Iraq war which was a coalition.

The US built aircraft carriers. Russia didn’t even try to catch up. It developed cheap hypersonic missiles that could sink them. It’s why you don’t see many of them around now. The US built stealth fighters, the Russians developed radar that could target the heat their engines were ommiting. The US built the F35, so advanced it can barely fly. The Russians developd the S series of ground to air missiles to shoot them down. Much of US technology is for show, as it was never envisaged it would have to fight an equal opponent.

The US also has a different minset to Europeans and Asians for that matter. The Europeans will bargain from a bad position. When the US realizes it can’t win, it drops everything and runs. Afghanistan, Vietnam and Korea are all examples of where that happened. How often do you hear now of bringing democracy to Afghanistan and fighting the Tailban? It’s been wiped from the collective memory not to be mentioned anymore. It’s just a different mindset.

Russia builds weapons for actual use. The US finances the military complex.

I am surprised that Russia is even failing in conventional warfare. I expected them to win this war quickly, but unable to control the Ukraine and deal with decades of partisan actions, decimating their army. But they failed even at step one, which is ridiculous, given they try so eager to present themselves as a super power.

However, reconstruction will be expensive either way. Either Russia will pay for it or never be able to get out of the sanctions which will turn them into a supersized North Korea.

The heaviest loss of population it will not have due to war actions, but due to brain drain. People will leave this shithole state in masses. I think in one generation Russia and Turkey will be equal in population, but Turkey with a young and power hungry, Russia with an old population and only those no crafts or talents needed outside of Russia so unable to leave it. Turkey, Japan and China will take their chunk of the pie. What they lacked for a super power is simply population and now they do everything to decimate their own.

 

Correction, the US has never outright won a ground war since the Civil War, if you count the Union as the US. The US builds unpractical weapons to enrich the MIC, that's all it does.
