I don't defend the old South African government. They were a bunch of bastards. I met people there who attempted to sterilise blacks by poisoning the drinking water. Lots of horrible people over there.

It truly is a country without a future, and without a solution - which is sad because there are a lot of very kind people over there.

I was walking around Fishhoek at night with a local friend of mine and was accosted by a black man clearly on crack. Even he ended up being a nice person and we chatted for an hour before we bought him some smokes without being asked to.

A lot of people are very disillusioned over there, because of the dominance and corruption of the ANC. The options are not apartheid or the ANC, but it's framed this way by them.

But please in a book trying to cover 400 years of American history all you'll ever get is the highlights.
