No. Every cell is alive. Tumors are alive. But they aren't persons even if they are human tissue. Personhood is all about the existence of a (human) mind.

So then hypothetically, someone could walk into someone else’s room and that person is brain dead and he smothers them to death with a pillow. You wouldn’t call that murder?

If they're brain dead they're dead. Perhaps their tissues are being kept alive for harvesting. Maybe you meant comatose. Then it would be murder. Apples and oranges to compare a less active mind with a mind that has never existed.

The brain starts to develop in the fetus starting a 5 weeks. So by using your logic, then personhood starts at 5 weeks.

I was going to ask something similar. I'd have maybe used the example of a comatose person. Are they fair game in @LiveUninhibited 's worldview? What about someone who is unconscious?

No. It's not just any brain development that meant personhood, only that which can result in a conscious mind. This is not until later in development.

Sounds like you just described Joe Biden. Anyways, how do you, or any scientist, know when a baby can or can't suffer pain? That doesn't make any sense. Regarding mental existence, I don't remember my circumcision, I don't remember my first round of shots, etc., my earliest memory came when I was - according to my mom - 8 months old. Should she have had the right to kill me up until that point?

That's not even a half-assed rebuttal. Now you're just doing the equivalent of this:

Why would you compare an inactive mind with a mind that has never existed? If there's any chance for the comatose person to recover at all, then it's murder.

I've rebutted parts of it in the past, but I need to get some work done now. Maybe later if I still care.

They also call us cultists, but a cultist takes what they hear from their leader(s) without question.

Both the "inactive" mind of a comatose patient and the baby's developing mind have a chance to gain consciousness in the coming weeks. They're actually in really similar states. Why is it ok to murder a baby that's 16 weeks old but not a comatose person that's been in a coma for 4 months? Neither one has demonstrated any consciousness in the past 4 months. Both stand at least a reasonable chance of demonstrating it in the future.

Nah man, sounds too made up for me. If bacteria on Mars can represent life, then so can a heartbeat.

The irony is that the body can live with little to no brain while the brain can only survive a minimal time without the heart. I would say that the heart defines life vastly greater than the brain.

It is clinically accurate to say that a fetus at six weeks doesn't really have a heartbeat by conventional terms. The ultrasound is actually detecting electrical activity around the still developing heart and the sound is indeed generated by the machine based on the ultrasound readings rather than being any real sounds picked up directly in the womb.

That has long been the case though, and the idea that it was "designed to convince people that men have the right to take control of a woman's body" is still ridiculous. I do feel that these laws are the result of ignorance and/or misrepresentation of the complexities of early embryonic/fetal development to invent an artificial and oversimplified cut-off for abortion though. This woman is, ironically, being part of the problem.

Pretty certain there are many instances of people who were declared clinically brain dead and “came back to life”.

Good thing liberals take science over everything else because science says there is a fetal heartbeat between 5 and 7 weeks in nearly all pregnancies.
