If soviet technology was behind in the 80's, what is it now against modern American weapons?

So true. Overmatching with weapons like JAVELIN, STINGER and HIMARS is essential. But TRAINING is also essential. The US Army trains troops in unique ways that other nations try to emulate. First... some basic concepts:
    - Training Levels: We train at five levels.. INDIVIDUAL (skills like marksmanship, first aid.. things soldiers do BY THEMSELVES)
CREW (such as two guys manning a machine gun or the guys in a tank melding their driver,
loader, gunner and Commander skills into one cohesive effort... lots more)
TEAM (like multiple tanks or multiple Infantry squads working together)
COMBINED ARMS (Infantry working with tanks and maybe Artillery)
JOINT Army working with Navy, Marines and yes... Air Force too)
    - The tools or DOMAINS are: CONSTRUCTIVE (Computer based training)
    REAL (field training)
    VIRTUAL (artificial environments)
It takes a long time to train a US Soldier. An Apache Attack Helicopter crew starts with experienced helicopter pilots with LOTS of "stick time". I seem to remember it is 1,000 hours required just to apply but that could be wrong. I any case... its a lot of experience... just to be able to apply. Then there is an entire year at Ft Rucker to learn to fly the Apache. Then another year at Ft Hood to learn the weapons and tactics to FIGHT the Apache. With weapons like JAVELIN and maneuver aids like "geeks" (GCCS - Global Command and Control System.. a GPS based maneuver aid) and laser "designators" needed for laser-guided weapons and so much more... it even takes awhile to train an Infantryman.

It all comes together when US Forces rotate through CTC's (Combat Training Centers) where they "go to war" in a high tech simulation environment at such locations as the Army's "National Training Center" at Ft Irwin, CA and the "Combined Arms Training Center at Ft Polk, LA. The Marines have their own CTC at 29 Palms, CA.

The CTC's have worked well. When Captain (later General) McMasters destroyed an entire Iraqi armored division in Desert Storm with his task force of 29 tanks and Armored Personnel Carriers, he said "We did this all before at Ft Irwin". Canada, Australia and the UK are just a few of the countries that have established their own CTC's based on the US model.

Doesn't change the fact that the Confederates got their asses kicked.

Some of the Russian planes which have been shot down had cell phones duct-taped to the dash to be used for GPS. I think that illustrates where they are tech-wise.

The Confederates ran out of resources. They didn't "get their asses kicked".

The Confederates never had many resources. The union could produce over 400 cannons a month.. the Confederates 28. The Union had a huge Navy and the ability to build lots of ships. The Confederates didn't. The Union had a huge population. The Confederates didn't. The outcome was easily predictable.

But Robert E. Lee was a brilliant tactician and strategist. He won battle after battle even with the meager resources he had at hand. He was almost always outnumbered, but continued to win time after time. Union generals almost always fell back to lick their wounds and recover. Until grant showed up and was willing to get beaten, but kept edging toward the Confederate Capital... relentlessly.

The outcome was never a far gone conclusion. The Federals didn't have it in the bag until the Appomattox Campaign.

oddly enough.......it's a handy, very accurate, double-check to visual navigation when you're in high stress high manoeuvre low altitude situations, especially in places without too many visual features, like deserts (some of the RAF Jaguars had them in Desert Storm way back), or where there is major rearrangements to the scenery like the Ukraine war zones. It does sound counter-intuitive but if it helps the pilot then...why not!.

They really did... compare population, industrial output, military resources.... the South never stood a chance. But they did put up one helluva fight. BT... Lee is being ERASED at West Point... horrible.

You're leaving out the possibilit of the Federal government losing its will to wage war and that possibility definitely existed.

Nope . They got their asses kicked up and down the South. Up the Mississippi and down to Savanah. Most of the time the Confederates were spending their time with their backside toward the enemy so that they could get a proper ass-kicking.

Like the stupid Germans who thought they were “backstabbed”. Nope. The Germans Soldiers simply got their ass kicked in WWI.

I guess it's a shame that about half of the people living in the south weren't interested in fighting.

If only they could have convinced all of those slaves to fight in the war of northern aggression, maybe they would have had a chance.

I'm aware that you will be able to find a few Uncle Tom's who may have fought for the south, but just imagine what they could have done if they had gotten the rest of those lazy slaves to defend their country.

You couldn't be more wrong. All the talented generals served with the Confederate Army. Richard Taylor ran Banks' ass completely out of Louisiana in the Red River Campaign. Hell, Albert Sydney Johnston ran Sherman so ragged that he had a nervous breakdown...lol

Um, he graduated from West Point 30 years before the war...lol

He was by far the most brilliant commander to ever graduate from West Point.

I guess your idea of talented is the ability to rape and murder based on skin color.

How many battles did Mexico win against Texas.

Answer: It doesn’t matter - Mexico got their asses kicked.

BTW Mexico outnumbered Texas far more than the Union outnumbered the Slavers.

Sam Houston was smart enough to know that the Confederates were losers before the war started.

That doesn't negate the fact that he's one of the most talented generals in United States history.

I really don’t understand why people think losing a war demonstrates more talent than winning one.

I guess this stupid mentality is why the U.S. hasn’t won a war since WWII. Thank goodness they finally got rid of the trash traitor Lee.

Other than nukes, I am not sure there is much Russia can do that they aren't already doing. They are pretty much going to be back and forth in Ukraine unless the west abandons supplying weapons. The russians depend on weapons sales to fund building extra weapons and getting yourself boxed in like this is no boom for advertising your wares, let alone the sanctions hurdles. Even if Putin calls up 300K reservist, it is unlikely that they be able to get any more down range than at the current rate of replenishment because their military even in the best of times is not oriented toward being able to mobilize ready reserve forces in large numbers.

Looking more and more like a stalemate that will be come down to political resolve and/or regime change in Russia.
