What if they had been held accountable?

They Legitimized the Myth of a Stolen Election — and Reaped the Rewards

Five days after the attack on the Capitol last year, the Republican members of the House of Representatives braced for a backlash. Two-thirds of them — 139 in all — had been voting on Jan. 6, 2021, to dispute the Electoral College count that would seal Donald J. Trump’s defeat just as rioters determined to keep the president in power stormed the chamber. Now one lawmaker after another warned during a conference call that unless Republicans demanded accountability, voters would punish them for inflaming the mob.

“I want to know if we are going to look at how we got here, internally, within our own party and hold people responsible,” said Representative Nancy Mace of South Carolina, according to a recording of the call obtained by The New York Times.

When another member implored the party to unite behind a “clarifying message” that Mr. Trump had truly lost, Representative Kevin McCarthy of California, the Republican leader, emphatically agreed: “We have to.”

More than 20 months later, the opposite has happened. The votes to reject the election results have become a badge of honor within the party, in some cases even a requirement for advancement, as doubts about the election have come to define what it means to be a Trump Republican.

Clearly McCarthy under estimated the degree to which The Following had the capacity to suspend reality. After 4+ years of Trump's outlandish lies and lawlessness one would have thought he'd know better. Though I can appreciate how he and the other Repubs came to the wrong conclusion. After all, they witnessed the riot. Who could have believed after something like that that Trump fans would stay loyal.

Didn't you just tell me to consolidate all my posts into ONE thread?
This is like your 100th Jan 6th thread
Why do you not practice what you preach?
    I'm curious

The actions of the Repub caucus begs the question, what if the Repub congressmen had been right? What if the heinous, traitorous act Trump and his minions committed had been responded to by a rejection, en masse, from the party? Would we have been spared the stop the steal madness?

We really need to ban the Republican party. There can be no democracy if there are opposing parties. The people need to be able to vote for Democrats and Democrats only because you can't have democracy without Democrats. I mean, the term is right there in their name! What do we have when Republicans win? There's no such word and Republicocracy so it's just silly to allow Republicans to participate in a system that was made specifically for Democrats.

That's called a MONARCHY, not a DEMOCRACY and there is nothing democratic about the democrats. Get educated please.

It doesn't need to be true to have the desired effect. Trump did steal the election from hillary and then he stole her line 4 years later.

Republican partisans have rewarded objectors with grass-roots support, paths to higher office and campaign money. Corporate backers have reopened their coffers to lawmakers they once denounced as threats to democracy. And almost all the objectors seeking re-election are now poised to return to Congress next year, when Republicans are expected to hold a majority in the House.

Indeed, we all know by now the fate of those Repubs who did the right thing. Like vote for Trump's impeachment. They have been unceremoniously purged. There is very little room in the POT for truth tellers when it comes to the 2020 election.

Yes! And I don't think they would have payed a political price. But when McCarthy went to Mar-a-lago to bow down to "The Prophet", that scared everybody. They HAD to be on the same page, or those who stood up for democracy would pay the price at the ballots.

I don't find the subject matter to be the least bit threatening. I merely find it so absurd an opinion that the only way I can even fathom responding to it is with a comparable level of absurdity.

    Um no.
A single party government is called an autocracy.
A monarchy needs a royal family.

Should I interpret that answer to mean you are a denier of Biden's free and fair election?

IMO, the POT missed a great opportunity to become the GOP again. Had Repubs coalesced around a narrative rejecting Trump's crazy, unsubstantiated election fraud claims they could have rid themselves (and the country) of him as a political force.

Nope. Biden won and I was good with the results before going to sleep that night. I placed zero value on the words he stole from hillary.

C'mon, Jack! You've been listening to the Democrats for as long as I have and must KNOW that the Constitution they refer to is something radically different than the one ratified 233 years ago.

Actually, the Constitution has changed very little over the years. Most of the Amendments have been clarifications of Constitutional principles rather than changes to the original construction. The 12th, 14th, and 17th Amendments are the only ones that changed any structural component of the Constitution and the 16th conferred a new right to the federal government. Technically, the 18th Amendment also conferred a new federal right but that was undone by the 21st Amendment. All the other Amendments merely clarify processes already delegated to the federal government.
