WASHINGTON — The Biden administration is no longer accepting applications for student loan forgiveness after a second federal court shut down the program.

“Courts have issued orders blocking our student debt relief program,” the Education Department said on its federal student aid website. “As a result, at this time, we are not accepting applications. We are seeking to overturn those orders.”

Fulfilling a campaign pledge, President Joe Biden announced in August plans to forgive up to $20,000 in federal student loan debt for individuals with incomes below $125,000 or households earning less than $250,000. The White House has estimated that more than 40 million people could qualify.

Already, about 26 million people have applied, and 16 million applications have been approved. However, because of court rulings, none of the relief has actually gone out. The Department of Education would “quickly process their relief once we prevail in court,” White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said.

Thanks for your votes... now run along.

This program has been challenged previously, and that didn't stop the administration from stopping development, creation of the online application, or accepting applications.

Now suddenly, they voluntarily stop accepting applications because of a legal challenge?

How can it not be obvious that the entire scheme was just buying votes... and then being sold a bill of goods after the election?

Biden waited way too long to act. That is why the matter is stuck in the courts now. If he had acted in April when he said he was going to, and not late August, these issues could have been resolved by now or at least on the way to the SCOTUS this term. Now all that said he was on sketchy ground with this across the board plan, and TBH, $10K doesn't mean squat to the borrowers who are pinned to the carpet by this debt.

The one time adjustments are still going forward and being made as we speak. PSLF recipients are finally getting their overpayments refunded and discharges. Others should see adjustments made by July. Those have zero to do with the EO stopped by the courts. The new rules will help borrowers going forward though those will only apply to newer graduates.

Progress is being made incrementally at least so the GOP hasn't been as successful as they want to believe in terms of student loan relief. Just the one time payments are held up. The rest is happening.

The DOJ will be filing continuance after continuance so that they can preserve this fight for 2024.

The election's over now, let's let that loan forgiveness thing slide until the next one.

Win elections by fear and by buying the votes. I see it worked in 2022. It all should be illegal.

What is there to discuss? A federal judge has shut down the Biden Student Forgiveness Program with the Judge thinking that the Executive Order is a regulation. Go figure.

The real issue is what to do with the broken down student loan program that is out there with college tuition costs do not match, better described as underwater, against the expected salary for those intro professional jobs out there. The GOP solution: to make the student loan more unaffordable for those who want to go to college.

What’s wrong with a student loan compared to any other loan? Student loans are predatory, colleges don’t make students aware of the implications of those loans or the job futures for some of the most insane classes imaginable. Why are tuition costs so high? I saw a story about two years ago that stated a college in Michigan or Minnesota spends 55% of student tuition money on pensions and benefits for retirees.

Since it's very important, maybe Soros and Sam Bankman-Fried could pay off everone's loans.

Why would the democrats need to buy votes when they manufacture them out of thin air?

What republican didn't vote for this? Would you rather have the next President to have full control of the power of the purse? Full on socialism here we come, a lefty's wet dream.

Yup, the DNC mantra "FREE MONEY".. If the DNC ran on self-reliance, common sense, hard work and independence, they'd never win any election again :)

Wasn't really Biden, but his handlers.

Moreso, I am picking on the entitlement crowd that votes based on freebies who repeatedly get scammed.

Colleges do not make the loans, the financial institutions do through the Dept of Ed. Second, tuition is high especially for private institutions who are not subsidized by the state. The biggest cost is the room and board and that is what is driving a majority of total college costs today. But the main problem with student loans is that the Federal Government does not honor its agreement with certain types of loans and forgiveness, namely the public service, teachers, and first responders student loan forgiveness, assuming the student met all the requirements. But the bigger problem is that college costs do not match the initial job salaries once a person graduates.

Because financial institutions do use predatory lending practices, they charge the interest the moment you obtain the loan while not being required to repay until you graduate or drop out, there needs to be reform and minimize the interest charged.
