New York City is now going to begin sweeping homeless people off the streets.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams has directed the police department to take individuals who appear to be mentally ill into custody for involuntarily psychiatric evaluations, even if they are not considered to be an imminent threat to the public.

How the forced hospitalization of 'mentally ill' people in need will work in NYC - ABC7 New York (abc7ny.com) Kiara Alfonseca, December 1, 2022

Very likely this is not only going to be applied to those homeless who actually show signs of being mentally ill, but will be used as an excuse to sweep other homeless people off the streets as well. It will make it much easier for police to perform an arrest, since an actual crime doesn't have to be committed, and "appearing to be mentally ill" can be a very subjective thing, the slightest odd appearance or behavior could be interpreted as a sign. This of course is going to be targeted at those who appear to be homeless.

The mayor has come under mounting public pressure to "do something" about the homeless crisis in the city.

Much of the public does not seem to be aware that so-called "treatment" for mental illness is NOT very effective at all, in most cases.
Medical science is simply still not advanced enough in this area to really offer much help. Just because a treatment for some disease exists, that does not mean that a certain treatment does very much to help. Many of these medications intended to treat mental illnesses have very bad side effects, and the mental illness does not go away just because they are on a pill.

What this policy will really mostly do is put the mentally ill who on the streets out of sight, so other people don't have to look at them.

related thread: California passes law allowing homeless with mental illness to be harassed and imprisoned

The change in policy will also make it easier to arrest drug users, since police will be able to arrest and search individuals walking the street just because they appear to be "acting strangely".

We need to do something to help people who are mentally ill and living on the streets.

I will withhold judgement on this specific policy until we see how it is executed.

The point of this thread is that putting them in forced "treatment" will not help them, in most cases.

Most people in society do not realize that currently existing forms of treatment for the majority of mental illnesses are not very effective or helpful at all.
Naive and stupid people don't actually understand the issue very well and assume there must be some easy medical solution that exists.

This isn't actually about helping the mentally ill. It's about removing homeless people off the streets, so other people don't have to be inconvenienced by them, and don't have to look at them.

Like I said, i will wait and see what the program is and what type of outcomes we see.

Just doing nothing isn't helping, that we know for sure.

We already have a good idea how it is going to be executed.

That sounds like "We have to pass the law first to see what it will do"

In other words "We have to do something"

That is exactly the notion and rationale driving this policy.

Maybe they can start arresting fat people and put them in forced weight loss centers.

The ACLU is going to sue and have this policy ended.

It's ironic. New York City is so super-Progressive. Yet, the city has had a series of rather Fascist-leaning Democrat mayors. (I mean mayors pushing rather "fascist"-type solutions to try to solve problems, and seeming to hold fascist-type notions)
Rudolph Giuliani, Michael Bloomberg, Bill de Blasio, and now Eric Adams, if you look at all of their personalities and the type of policies they have espoused.

(although Giuliani was a bit more Republican leaning)

Brilliant, force treatment and then discharge them to where? Back to the streets?

Nothing will change in NYC until they get real leadership. They don'y have it right now and they have no clue how to tackle issues, they only create them, then blame others.

    L)Is there a problem.......R)Yes
    L)Do you have a solution......R).No
L)Ok, we're going to try this..........R).Well, that won't work, how dumb. We'll be over here mocking you in the meantime.

Helping the homeless and mentally Ill is a good goal. But enabling them is not helping and all to often the left doesn’t understand that.

Solving problems is hard, unfortunately the left’s solutions often times make the issue worse. So it’s worth mocking such attempts when the outcome is obvious.

It is inhuman to continue to pretend that most of the so-called homeless living on the streets actually possess the capacities for choice that we associate with essential citizenship. In fact, we inflict an artificial image of freedom on vulnerable people. At the same time, we inflict these "homeless" and their unsightliness, health threats and irrational behavior on children, the elderly and other defenseless innocents.
These people need to be placed in areas away from cities where there is sanitation, shelter and healthcare.

if I set up a tent in front of your house in my neighborhood, I would expect the police to confiscate it and arrest me

otherwise next week there could be a dozen tents in front of your house

that can't be legal, it just can't

if they are living on the street in a tent in front of your house, then yes, arrest them, offer them help to become productive citizens again

the left often does nothing, the right is against helping them as they see it as giving them something for free "treatment" - which is also supporting doing nothing
