    The Utopians on the Left have [as their Holy Grail] the desire to live in a world where equality reins among all peoples. But if you look out any window and observe the natural order of things, it is not difficult to ascertain that there is not a single example of equality in Nature.

    Not only is equality impossible, but it would be catastrophic [which is why Mother Nature Herself decided that it is inequality and competition that best serves]. Imagine the shitsh*w that would ensue in a world where everything was equal.

    There will always be hierarchies in all categories because we are all different. Whether it is personal appearance, innate intelligence, physical abilities, social acumen, or any of an infinite number of categories, it is the differences which have allowed our species to thrive.

    Utopians need to channel their energies to some other project [perhaps you can figure out how to make cities livable again]. Or maybe you folks can organize yourselves and pick up the trash scattered about in our urban Utopian enclaves or any multitude of worthwhile projects, but please educate yourselves to a level where you can see that true diversity is a great thing and that your equality of thinking is ALWAYS the shortest path to the bowels of Hell.

    What nonsense! When any reasonable person (leftist or not) talks about equality, they are obviously referring to "equal opportunities". NOT that every man should look like Chris Evans and every woman like Melissa Benoit.

    Quite inaccurate. Except for a minority of what ever it is you call left.

    It's not equality for all. It's equal opportunity for all.
    Everyone makes or breaks on their own, but at least they get a chance to try.

    Interesting. The concept of equality like many others has been twisted more in last few years than the last few hundred. And, most often- arrogantly.

    Nature does it's job very, very well. One of the things it does is to give every living thing what it needs to succeed- as itself. And that IS equality. Different, but all gifted to succeed. Dogs don't have wings, snakes don't have legs, something are beautiful, some are ugly. ALL of them are equipped to succeed. Until they decide that something else would be better and tell themselves they have been cheated by not being like that other thing. Then, then dismiss the gifts that would give them success, if they tried- and covet something else that looks easier or better. Start measuring yourself by comparing yourself to others. instead of your own expectations and objectives.

    The only species on the planet that continually struggles with this problem in the human one. Seems when we finally meet the real enemy- he is us.....

    They gave up on that years ago with the all AA was not producing the equity they believed it would produce. Now it is equity they taut and using desperate outcomes as evidence there is not equality of opportunity.

    where is the "bigotry" part? That's a pretty big claim. You should back it up with something substantial. Jumping to instantly call people "bigot" or "fascist" is rather lame

    You cannot nor will you ever be able to provide equal opportunity, as well. The only you can do is provide the greatest level of freedom possible and this will allow each individual the opportunity to maximize their own potential.

    The point is that success must come from within the individual. The nurturing of success is 90% from the individual's family and friends and the rest from the community. The state can only interfere with success and seems to be an equal opportunity purveyor of such unintended consequences.

    We need to get rid of all of this political philosophy [which is simply justification for the state attaching itself to the lives of individuals] and allow people to thrive based on their own merits.

    Maybe not. But are we clear that your statement (the one I quoted) is absolutely false? That NOBODY has ever advocated for some "utopian" equality?

    If that is clear... what leftists DO advocate is for politicians to try the best they can to give everybody the same opportunities. The world is not binary. It's not black and white: everything or nothing. We demand that politicians work to achieve whatever they can achieve. But not a smidgeon less. This is even in the Preamble to the Constitution. So it's not even a "leftist" dream. It's a dream by everybody who is not an all-out bigot. Including the framers.

    The ONLY possible reason I can think why anybody would not want this, is because they are seeking to normalize bigotry.

    So you want to get rid of the Preamble to the Constitution of the United States. If you manage to do that, you will have gotten rid of the very REASON why this country was constituted. The extreme MAGA-right has already tried and failed. All they accomplished was putting many of them in prison. And their main leader very close to being prosecuted.

    You are a Utopian. Look at what the political process has produced over the centuries. Does this seem like a process that is going to deliver on such a pipe dream? And what's with the bigot comment. It doesn't even make sense [although I do realize that this is your go-to meme for attacking anybody not on-board with your authoritarian narratives].

    It seems to me that people who see bigotry everywhere might have bigotry a bit too much on their mind, no?

    How is it not clear that NOBODY is seeking or has ever sought this "utopian equality" you opened this thread you falsely accuse others of seeking? If that's not clear, that means a serious debate is impossible. All I can tell you is, READ the Preamble to the Constitution. Because what it says is the ONLY thing we are seeking. And if THAT is not clear either (or if it sounds "utopian" to you), I can't help you...

    As for the "bigoted" comment, let me ask you a question. No need to answer to me. Just to yourself. Most likely you won't answer it honestly to me anyway. But you might to yourself. What is the PURPOSE of this thread? So what if some "utopian equality" is not achievable? What is wrong with doing everything we can, even if the end result falls shy of perfection?

    Again: no need to respond to me. Answer it to yourself so you can respond honestly. And besides, I already know the answer.... So no need to bother.

    Equal opportunity is a condition created by economics not government. In fact any kind of interference from the government has always resulted in unequal opportunities.

    So we have the leftist idea of equity. To each according to his need and that's not how the system works to each should be according to what they provide that's an opportunity. An opportunity to provide as in participate in a labor market.

    That means there will be equality of opportunity but there will not be equality of outcome.

    Since you are a competent spokesperson, for the Left, obviously.

    Of course, the portion of those on the Left who are
    "Utopians," would be less than 1%, so most people on the Left, would also have no legitimate base of knowledge, about the "Holy Grail," of those rare Utopians, you mention.

    You misinterpret the meaning of "equality," when it comes to American politics. Words can have more than a single meaning (FYI), based on their context.

    Maybe try reading a little bit, at least, of our Declaration of Independence:

    "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness…"

    It means that all people, deserve to be treated as people. It then goes on, to more specifically define, their view of what rights every human should be entitled to, in the eyes of not only any other human, but of humanity, on the whole.

    And this is also your view, of our Declaration of Independence: "fodder for the base?"
    (See above). You are, however, woefully mangling the meaning of "equal opportunity." Perhaps it would be clearer to you, if you translated that as
    "no unequal burdens," placed upon people, by any part of the societal structure.

    Talking about equality as though it is a singularity opens the door for misinterpretation. Equal pay? Equal looks? Equal abilities? Equal opportunity?

    Can't help this one. Vonnegut is one of my favorites.

    Another term for "unequal burden," is discrimination; and, while you are, for the foreseeable future, correct-- there is no reason to anticipate the cessation of all bigotry & prejudice-- you are certainly mistaken, that "there's nothing that can be done about it." That is why anti-discrimination laws, exist.

    Kind of, but republicans are delusional when it comes to freedom. In their minds, the only source of oppression is the government. In reality, any powerful entity can oppress whether it be a government, facebook, gangs, or some rich guy. There are certain things that can be done to get us closer to equality of opportunity. This includes everybody having access to education and healthcare. Without these things available, nepotism is the default. Parents do whatever they can to get their kids an advantage, and rich parents have resources to do this, and so advantages become concentrated and equality of opportunity becomes less for those not born to advantaged parents. Corporations find ways to concentrate their advantages as well with maximum "freedom" and we get monopolies.

    Wait is it the individual or their family? Just not the government? huh? All things occur in a context. The individual finding success no matter what is the exception to the rule, except in conservative mythology.

    That's not what happens when the state steps away. Well, maybe at first, and then nepotism, tribalism and the like kick in.

    A true classic! Vonnegut's most memorable short story. The only other one I still remember, all these years later, from Welcome to the Monkey House, was the one in which someone who'd created a mind control device, is testifying before Congress, whose ire has been raised, by the invention. Some very worthwhile, interesting, of course amusing, and even prophetic material, in his work.

    The idea of that latter story I mention, I recall seeing echoed, at a later date, by a political cartoon, about Congressional hearings, questioning Bill Gates, about Microsoft's monopolistic practices. Of course, not all that much has changed, if we replace the then symbol of a rich and mighty titan of technology, Gates, with Mark Zuckerberg, for example.

    But, getting back to the cartoon: Bill Gates was talking into a miniature voice recorder, saying, "Note to self: buy Congress."

    Interesting that you use the example of the natural world. Unlike for humans, there are no property rights in the natural world. Nobody protects animals' stashes but themselves. Thus, whatever animals own (usually not much) can be taken away by a stronger animal at any moment. Therefore, we don't see situations in the animal world where the 10 richest animals own more than 1% of the total available resources. Yet, in human society, such egregious inequalities are not just accepted, but celebrated by the individualists, just because they dream that they can be rich at one time (of course it will never happen).

    Remember, trees don't keep growing to reach the sun. Yet, individual human wealth can do just that, based on the miracle of exponential compound interest. Of course, in the natural world, every phenomenon based on exponential growth will eventually come to a halt. So will increasing wealth inequality.
