College math a ‘white, cisheteropatriarchal space,’ Vanderbilt professor says at major conference

...“Undergraduate Mathematics Education as a White, Cisheteropatriarchal Space and Opportunities for Structural Disruption to Advance Queer of Color Justice” was the full title of the lecture given by Luis Leyva, associate professor of mathematics education at the Peabody College of Education and Human Development at Vanderbilt University...

... Leyva’s “findings depict[ed] how Black, Latin*, and Asian QT [queer and transgender] students’ narratives of experience reflect forms of intersectionality, or instances of oppression and resistance,” according to his lecture’s abstract...

If that makes perfect sense to you, you might want to see a doctor. You could have the same strain of syphilis that turned Al Capone into a drooling imbecile.

Of course math be racist. You have those pesky statistics which don't care about your feelings or emotions such as the one that says that 50% of homicides are committed by people falling within 13% of the population.

It impacts the ability to recruit african americans into stem fields. They are so far behind in basic math you have to train them in unit conversion to get them to be able to compete in labs.

Yikes...this Leyva sounds like a Crazed Looney Toon...
Btw--I had to Google that word:
    Cis-Heteropatriarchy
Cis-Heteropatiarchy is a system of power and control that positions cis-straight white males as superior and normative in their expression of gender and sexuality

These days higher education seems to be nothing more than finding new excuses why Person A is not doing as good as Person B who is always white and most often a bio male. Remember, the expectation of someone being on time is racist.

Clearly math isn't racist (or patriarchal or w/e...) but I will share a little anecdotal experience that might be somewhat related- I originally started college as a Forestry major. I switched majors (to art...) after three semesters because I couldn't pass calculus. The school I went to was and always has been an agriculture and engineering school, and they'd had a Forestry program for as long as Forestry has been a thing. And for all that time up until the year prior to my having gone there, Calculus was not a part of the Forestry curriculum. The school wanted to get the best Forestry dept head in the nation to head their program, and he would only transfer over if they added a full year (two semesters) of Calculus to their Forestry curriculum. So they did, and that is the ONLY reason why they did.

I still don't even understand exactly what sine, cosine and tangent really mean, or what they potentially have to do with conservation and wildlife conservation... It didn't help that both of my attempts at calculus were taught by TA's, one from Japan who was clearly a genius ...but didn't speak any English, and the other from China who spoke perfect English but taught way more about the merits of communism than he taught anything math related ...but also I am TERRIBLE at complex math and not a very dedicated student, so there is that too.

But I can't help but think that perhaps some people feel (as I did) that complex math may not be necessary in certain programs that it is being required for. It would not have taken a lot for my frustrated 20yo brain to have become convinced that Calculus had been added to the Forestry program simply to keep people 'like me' out of the program. I don't think that, but I easily could have back then with just a little convincing.

Sounds like critics are suffering from fear of discussion and complex thoughts along with fear of diminished socio-economic relevance as society evolves.

Because partial differential equations, eigenvectors, fourier transforms, integrals, differential equations, etc... are simple and easy.... race baiting on the other hand is very very complex. It takes a lot of mental effort and acuity for a minority MATH professor to point out that white man bad instead of teaching his students trivial mathematic concepts.... the concepts upon which nearly all modern technology is based and which 1% of the population use to mechanize the world for the rest of society. I understand the professors apparent problem, he can't get published discussing his breakthroughs in mathematical knowledge so he is settling for getting published in the burgeoning math is racist field. That will get a ton of bridges, jets, computers and high rises built.

Lysenkoism.... pure and simple.... the kind that has gotten millions killed in the past and could easily get millions killed in the future. No healthy civilization would ever let this raving racist simple minded nutjob within a country mile of a position of power. In America, he can trumpet his hatred and bigotry to the world and get paid and applauded for doing so.

These idiots may very well destroy engineering and medicine in America. If that does happen, that is when real suffering finally shows up in America. That has never happened in our lifetimes.

Didn’t he hear: using big words that disproportionately aren’t understood by minorities is racist. He should cancel himself.

To be fair: “engineer” and “queer” mean much the same thing in their (relative) domains. So that last one is a bit pedantic, to my eye.

Here, it is for instance blacks average 454 on the SAT math section while whites average 547. By CRT definition math is racist.

If the system isn’t racist, then why the discrepancy in testing scores?

I think that Luis is barking up the wrong racist tree. I would think that math is an arm of Asian suppremacy. Maybe he's too concerned about trying to disambiguate the subtle multiplicity within the Asian continent. And, doing the same thing for the European heratige because it is widely accepted.

In other words, he wants to make blacks look better by putting down someone else but can't pick on the real math wisards because they are also a minority.

Difference in mathematical aptitude. Same reason explains the difference between whites and Asians. Did you think it was the anti white racism of math that leads to whites not scoring as high as Asians? Or are you a true CRTer that believes ONLY racial disparities that disfavor blacks is racism?

If the system isn’t racist, then why the discrepancy in colors of NBA and NFL players relative to their population ratios?

Regarding the story, how come no one is asking why this guy thinks certain people can’t do math? This guy represents the educational and intellectual elite, when the people he’s referring to hear a guy like that say they have no chance they give up before they start and go one to consider themselves victims.

If the system is racist, I wonder why Asians always come out on top and are the highest average wage earners in the country.

    Yes, called it!!!

We get it, dude. You're suffering from white fatigue. Go teach a semester in Africa or something and get over it.

Are you suggesting that white folk know that they’ll be “replaced” with Asians and just have a need to have black people lower than themselves because they’re totally not racists?

    sure, let’s go with that.

So is the professor correct? Is upper education mathematics dominated by white males?
