I am from the government, and I am here to shied you from the evils of the real world.

DeSantis signs Florida ban on kids using social media.
    https://www.miamiherald.com/news/politics-government/state-politics/article287064320.html
Gov. Ron DeSantis on Monday signed a bill blocking most kids from social media websites, setting up an expected court battle that could prevent the legislation from ever taking effect.

House Bill 3, passed by lawmakers with bipartisan support this month, forbids kids 13 and younger from creating social media accounts and requires the platforms to seek out and remove their profiles. Kids 14 and 15 would need parents’ consent.

So you acknowledge there are evils, the only difference being you’d like 12 and under to just go ahead and dive right in. Why’s that?

    From the article:

For once in my life, DeSantis might not be on the wrong side of something for my taste. Pre-teens should not be worried about social media and don’t need that.

Looks like the pedophiles in FL will have a tougher time getting at the children with their virtual candy van.

Its your strawman claim, so I'll let you answer it.

It has nothing to do with what I "like". The only thing I want is the leave parenting to parents, and keep the government out of it. You want the government take over, so you and I have very different mindsets.

And they'd have an even tougher time, if the government mandates all children stay home in their basements.

What you said is exactly how authoritarian governments sell their BS. They always pretend to be "protecting" you and your children, but in reality they are just expanding their control over the population.

Indeed we do, there are already plenty of laws concerning the protection of children. You want kids to enter strip clubs, drink, drive, have sex, etc so long as they have parental consent? Ridiculous.

There is no scenario by which unsupervised child exposure to predators is okay. Parental consent doesn’t do anything to change or mitigate this. Therefore it’s appropriate for government to make rules as they have in many many other cases.

If parents want to "protect" their children from the internet, radio, books or TV, then that's up to them, not the government.

Come back when you have learned what the topic is.

I agree with you on that and that includes teaching about sexual deviations within the school, not informing parents if their kids think they are the opposite sex and worse, counseling them on it without parental consent.

Supervising a child using social media is a parent’s job. Perhaps, more should be done about preventing adult predators pretending to be children on the internet.

    I agree.

So you have nothing but absolutism as a thought process and deflection as a defense. Classic you.

it’s very easy to just foist responsibility off on the parents without any mechanism whatsoever to actually help them to successfully protect their children under some rubric of “freedom”.

But Online Predation is extremely easy to do and difficult to root out and it’s impractical to always be staring at the same screen as your child every time they’re watching the screen.

end of the day until parents have more tools at their disposal to control what their kids have access to there should be reasonable strictures as it concerns access to social media and other areas of exposure, because radicalization is a very real thing, which I think you acknowledge but again, have no answer for.

    Hmmmm

I thought it was the parents who decide what kids can and cannot see...

But I guessing the line between "conservative" and "fascist" shrinks every day.

So what is your alternative? Let these kids continue to get exploited? You seem to be a proponent of government intervention/interference in our daily lives, so why is this the bridge that is too far for you?

Nope, they can’t enter strip clubs or purchase many goods and products or go on certain websites or drive etc etc etc. whether they have parental consent or not. Where ya been?

you mean like Facebook? Instagram? TikTok?

In the privacy of their own homes?
    With their parents permission?

Let parents raise their kids, as opposed to have the government do it.

Authoritarians only see one alternative and its always government control.

You are asking for it, not me.

There is nothing conservative about these people and their big government mindset. They are populist authoritarians, and for some weird reason they THINK they are conservative. They can re-define the Republican party, since it is their party, but they can't re-define conservatism.

Just FYI, the argument used by the bill pushers was not about sexual predators, but because they claim Social Media is addictive, and the young delicate brain does not understand it. The bill does leave some social media exempt, but it does not mention which ones.

Fast food is said to be addictive too, so that might go next. And then TV and video games.

If the argument is that Social Media is addictive why does the government feel they need to control this. Parents are fully capable of restricting websites visited as well as time on the internet. Indeed what is next for both children and adults?

Its not about 'evils'. Its the same principle as age restricting alcohol.

Why young brains are especially vulnerable to social media (apa.org)

There is a lot of advanced psychology that goes into getting the clicks and views that sell advertizing on social media. The dopamine rewards that keep people engaged (and sometimes literally addicted) can have an unhealthy effect on children's developing brains, similar to how alcohol can.

Social media is literally reprogramming kids' biochemical and neurological development in an abnormal way, just like an actual drug.

I don't know if a total ban is the right course, but it is probably better than nothing. Given how things have been working in Florida lately, this is probably a stepping stone to something more reasonable, where a compromise will be found after the ban gets enough pushback.

Another day, another reminder how much conservatives love 'Big Government'. Just remember folks, government knows best when it comes to your kids. I wrote this on another thread a little while ago. Fits perfectly:

"Conservatives have always LOVED 'big government', as long as they get to control how it acts. To believe otherwise requires such deliberate ignoring of fact that it pretty much deals that person out of any serious discussion - ideology = idiocy."

Do you think its reasonable to restrict minors from consuming alcohol?

Heaven forbid the kids should have to see porn for the first time when they're about 12 years old on a magazine or a VHS tape and maybe take their ass outside and ride a bicycle and skin their knee instead of sitting in the house all damn day tick tock.

I'm sure I'm not the only one that has seen a three or four year old operating a smartphone better than most of us old farts.

The internet has done a lot of good things but social media for children is not something that's going to work out for the betterment of society in the future.

This is something that shouldn't be the government's job but unfortunately most parents are nothing but children themselves these days....

Just look at the sick and sad sorry state of the world... When some kid is getting her head bashed into the ground by some other kid... Instead of someone stepping up and stepping in... All the mindless legions of morons pull out their phone and film it and see who can be the first one to upload it to social media.

This world has gone sick and it's not getting better.

But never mind all of these truths that I have spoken above, just make sure your four year old has a cell phone connection and is a tick tock Star by the time they are eight.... And if they are not it must be the fault of those damn Republicans.

There's a hard reset coming to our world soon and it's not going to be pretty.... But at least someone can be there to film it and post it on tiktok.... And that's what really matters....

I bet 90% of 10-year-old boys today have never even flown a kite or gone fishing yet. There's a sickness in this world and it's not getting better

Just consider calling me John the Baptist... A lone voice crying out in the wilderness.

Think for yourself and question authority.... This message brought to you by a revolutionary

Probably the main thing he has in mind is to protect children from exploitation and predators. Florida has a lot of sex offenders.

Some years ago my younger cousin was sent a lude picture by some strange man, causing her dad to become very upset and demand police do something about it.
