Can I get a cheer for Sleepy Joe's sanctions? :applause:Wow, they seem to be working so well...
I'm expecting the "but wait 'till next year, sanctions take a while to work" comments. Yeah okay, let's try that excuse again.

    https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/17/rus...ster-than-advanced-economies-in-2024-imf.html

The West is so butthurt, this is actually fake news. Word is that Russia's economy grew upwards of 7% in the first quarter, yet the IMF projects 3.2% for the year.....still better than any western country.

    Key points:
    • Russia’s economy is expected to grow faster than all advanced economies this year, according to the International Monetary Fund.
    • Russia is expected to grow 3.2% in 2024, the IMF said in its latest World Economic Outlook published Tuesday, exceeding the forecast growth rates for the world’s advanced economies, including the U.S.
    • The forecast will be galling for Western nations which have sought to economically isolate and punish Russia for its 2022 invasion of Ukraine.

    :bored:

"... continuing oil and commodity exports to the likes of India and China, as well as alleged sanctions evasion and high oil prices, have allowed it to maintain robust oil export revenues."

ruZzia is still a giant gas station run by a fascist dictator. No one, Bill included, actually wants to live there.

And 50 million RuZzians still have no toilets, or running water.

70% live below the poverty line...

    Worthless rubble....

3 million residents flooded and evacced....:).

Your own source points out it’s because Russia has vastly increased its military industrial spending.

massive war expenditures and low consumer spending does not a strong economy make.

Forget to read your own source?

I guess exporting your resources for "nothing" to Chinos/India indicates some kinda growth?...LOL.

He never reads past the rosy-sounding headline.

    ...

The head of the IMF told CNBC in February that the Russian economy was still facing significant headwinds despite the Fund’s rosy forecasts for the country of roughly 145 million people.

“What it [the growth data] tells us is that this is a war economy in which the state — which let’s remember, had a very sizeable buffer, built over many years of fiscal discipline — is investing in this war economy,” IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva told CNBC’s Dan Murphy at the World Governments Summit in Dubai in February.

“If you look at Russia, today, production goes up, [for the] military, [and] consumption goes down. And that is pretty much what the Soviet Union used to look like. High level of production, low level of consumption.

    ... https://www.cnbc.com/2024/04/17/rus...ster-than-advanced-economies-in-2024-imf.html

    USSR 2.0 indeed.

Add in the fact that RuZzia is in "full war production".....which means everything including the kitchen sink is invested towards military purposes.....other needs like ...flood relief....for 2mln + residents takes a distant back seat.....aka...let them drown.

Otoh....Western economies aren't even close to cracking a sweat for war production.

If...and I'll say IF....Western economies would switch to say 20% war production combined.....that would dwarf RuZZfascista full war production ...Bigly!

The issue with all this is that the IMF and their ilk obtains it's data from the sovereign state's own departments - meaning that they get fed what the Russians or whomever want people to know, not what they need to know or indeed what is real.

There was a comment about oil revenues increasing but the issue with that is that most of the revenues are in Rupees from India which are difficult to exchange on the open market for hard currency and likewise the same with Yuan from China...all Russia is doing is tying themselves to those nations from whom they obtain local currencies which cannot be exchanged for USD. Outside of certain metals and oil Russia needs to import most everything else...for which it needs a crap ton of hard currency....which it used to get from its sale of oil and gas....see the problem...?? By virtue of its Yuan currency trade imbalance it is now becoming tied to China for its imports...

indeed which then broaches the topic of opportunity costs...what has to be sacrificed in order to fund the war....

Yep...I suspect a lot is being sacrificed to fund this war....or "fiasco" as I like to call it.

A leftist? lol... I mean, I struggle to find things not related to loving Russia and hating Ukraine, but they seem conservative overall. Hesitancy for aiding Ukraine is more a rightwing thing than a leftwing thing. Not the whole right, but the right nonetheless.

    You fellas amuse me.

What, no comments about sanctions gonna work any time now? :-D

And what is all this gibberish about Russia's war economy, military industry?

I was told that Russia's military was destroyed by slava ukrop and they had no way to rebuild or replace it.

Can y'all make your minds up please? :)

As a reminder, the IMF is Washington-controlled and relies on it's own (fake news) data.

This is the same IMF that said in October Russia's growth for 2024 would be 1.1%, the same IMF that revised that number to 2.6% in January and the same IMF that now says 3.2%.

They're inching up on reality, just be patient. :)

Right now it is oil. If Trump gets in the price of oil will drop and our population will suffer!
Working men and women will swear and point at "Trump did this" stickers on gas pumps as they grit their teeth pumping cheap fuel prices while our enemies wonder how they are going to fund their war machines.
    Oh, the horrors!

There is nothing Trump could do to lower the price of oil. But I understand the need his cultists have to believe that he has magic powers.

If you believe it to be crap then what do you care what his source is? All you’d do is post your own source proving otherwise…which you haven’t done.

Perhaps it too will develop an advanced economy.

The burden of proof is on those who make the statement with the numbers and not on me. Anyway here are some links showing that the numbers from zoomic are crap:
    https://www.statista.com/statistics/1033016/russia-number-of-people-under-poverty/

Anyone who makes an unfounded statement should be ready to back it up or have their statement rightfully rejected. Why does he have to source his statements but not you?

That said, thanks for the links.

Question: is Russias metrics for assessing poverty the same as the US’s? It seems to me he could be getting his figures from our poverty standards while Russia has its own standards that are completely different.

I don’t honestly know the answer, but my suspicion is you both could be right in your own ways and think the question worth asking for clarity. But imo you’ve done your due diligence at this point and I think he should return the favor and from that there should be clarity one way or the other.

If you want to gauge poverty in Russia, just go to any major city and look for homeless and beggars on the street and compare them to what you see in the US. As I have.
