Calif. Lawmakers say buying 16, 17-year-olds for sex isn’t a felony

'The Senate Public Safety committee forced amendments on Sen. Shannon Grove to exempt people who solicit commercial sex from 16 and 17-year-olds.'

'California Democrats decided on Tuesday that purchasing a 16 or 17-year-old for sex is not a felony.'

'Democrats in the Senate Public Safety Committee forced amendments on the bill that the author, Sen. Shannon Grove (R–Bakersfield), objected to. Those amendments denied her efforts to protect 16 and 17-year-old children from being purchased as part of commercial sex trafficking.'

    Why?

'Current California law makes it a misdemeanor for anyone who purchases or solicits a minor for sex'

The argument was 'the solicitation of 16 and 17-year-olds should be excluded from being a felony because ... law enforcement would use this bill to unfairly target the LGBTQ community.'

'“In the state of California you have to be 18 to buy a lottery ticket, colleagues, 21 to purchase cigarettes because they’re so detrimental to your health, but somehow there are individuals who think that selling your body for sex at 16 years old is old enough and it should be OK,” Grove said during the hearing. “Regulating the tobacco industry but not commercial sexual exploitation of children seems rather troublesome to me. Buying a child for sex at any age should be treated as the serious crime that it is.”

Yeah, I don't get it, but then I don't get a number of things that come out of CA

I agree with you, but, the right never changed the law when they were in power either

I say make a clean bill just to change the underage crime to a felony... think we all agree on that

but this bill seems to affect adults too, that I would not support, is it any different from Trump saying he takes a girl out to buy furniture to get into her pants?

"(2) An individual who solicits, or who agrees to engage in, or who engages in, any act of prostitution with another person who is 18 years of age or older in exchange for the individual providing compensation, money, or anything of value to the other person. An individual agrees to engage in an act of prostitution when, with specific intent to so engage, the individual manifests an acceptance of an offer or solicitation by another person who is 18 years of age or older to so engage, regardless of whether the offer or solicitation was made by a person who also possessed the specific intent to engage in an act of prostitution."

Yes of course.... Overly sexualizing children before they hit puberty has nothing to do with child sex.

I'll repeat the question that no one else seems willing to answer: if a 17 year old solicits sex from another 17 year old, should that be a felony?

That's right, you see the kids aren't thinking about sexualizing. You adults are.

@Bowerbird Just FYI, the Democrats enjoy super-majorities in both the lower and upper houses of the California state legislature, and the governor is a Democrat. Republicans in California have no power. Any law that is passed in California, or any law that fails to pass in California, is because that's what the Democrats want to have happen. There are no exceptions. Whatever happens in California, there is no one to blame but Democrats.

It's not us on the right that are sitting here telling Little Johnny that he can be Little Jenny if he feels like it.

Yet you are trying to coopt that anti-trans hatred of yours to make it the same thing as actual abuse. Would it kill you to actually care about actual victims?

There you go falsely accusing me of hate simply because I don't play into the trans ideology.

No one is a victim because I am not playing along with their feelings.

The only victim would be actual biology that people are trying to suddenly turn upside down on it's head

I'm not accusing you of hate for not agreeing with trans ideology. I'm criticizing the fact that you equate parents who support their trans kids with actual physical abusers. If you would like to backtrack that comparison, I welcome that.

I think since both are minors, no. A more relevant question would be, what about an 18 year old soliciting sex from a 17 year old.

I ask because, it looks like, with the way this law was originally worded, this would be the case.

    Explain, please.

    Make up of California Legislature

    Senate:
    Democrats - 32 Republicans - 8
    Assembly: Democrats - 62 Republicans - 18

    Governor: Democrat

So I repeat. Republicans have zero power in California, and whatever is passed, or not passed, is due to the Democrat super-majority.

Have they always though? Sometimes these laws are a matter of papering over what had been a hole in the law for years. I am well aware that California is one of those states which has no minimum age for marriage and maybe this was a reason for abstaining from this law - it does not address an even bigger concern
    https://www.latimes.com/california/...riage-is-still-legal-in-california-at-any-age

It seems the issue is more complex than at first look

Lol ... Well, in a state like California, where Democrats have 100% uncontested power to do whatever they want, if they don't want to be blamed for things, they shouldn't do them.

But this isn't about marriage. This is about buying sex from children. This is an underground industry for pedophiles run by gang members and assorted pimps. The children are often compelled to take part by the adults who control them. They are victims. If California Democrats don't want to make soliciting children for sex a felony, that's on them. They own it.
