I don't have a Tik Tok account and I only watch that stuff when someone sends me a link. I'm also amused at how libs are exposed by Libs Of Tik Tok and that would be the only minor loss for me if Tik Tok goes away. If it's a national security concern, then it should go. Other than that, I don't care one way or another.

    For.

This thing is nothing but a Communist Chinese propaganda machine. They are also recording every keystroke their members make. It like on giant spyware site that gathers information on American citizens. The Communist Chinese Government means us nothing but ill.

Hey Steve, the way the poll question is phrased is somewhat confusing to make a selection. So I did not vote but I'm good with the ban.

I don't know enough about it to have an opinion. I guess it comes down too - Can China get the same amount of information on us without tik tok?
My intuition tells they can and already had this capability way before tik tok existed.

I screwed the pooch with the answer choices, so I asked the mods to either delete this thread or edit the choices to for and against.

Tik tok records every key stroke??

    Ah. Now we see.

The US "intelligence community " dislikes competition.

TikTok is mostly very annoying to me but even I feel banning this is just a waste of time and a piss poor showing of priorities.

Are they banning or just required that ownership be shifted away from someone controlled by the Chinese Communist Party?

Against. I have been cautioning people for years that it is Chinese spyware, but it's a slippery slope. I'm 100% in favor of the federal government banning it from federal devices that have email and transmit government information. But I'm against preventing a kid from viewing it if they want to. Zoom was doing similar stuff for a while and the market forced them to correct themselves.

Do you have any sources for this?
Because everything I have read shows they have a data center in TX that is monitored by third party companies to make sure no sensitive information is sent to or received by China.

Their security and privacy policies are actually tighter than that of Meta and Google in some instances in the way they shield data.

Instead of targeting a single app, why doesn’t congress pass uniform privacy and data security laws that would apply to all companies that operate in the US?

Don't care either. I don't go anywhere near it ,so it is totally irrelevant to me.

some claim (I am without sufficient information to ascertain the validity of this) that some of the idiotic attacks on Israel by college aged kids has been prompted by propaganda pushed by the CCP on Tik Tok. I don't know if this is accurate but I have heard these claims more than a few times from several sources

I'm in favor of it. There are plenty of other social media outlets like Instagram and Facebook, and we don't need to have one built and operated by China.

My main concern is that they are targeting a single company which seems like a bill of attainder. Other than that, I don't care. Those vids tend to be annoying.

I don't care either way but no company operating in the USA should be controlled by China without something to limit china's influence in America.

What is China gonna learn from fools on Tik Tok? This is nothing more than a ploy by certain US persons to buy TikTok for a song so they can spy on stupid Americans... just like google, facebook, apple, the US government and the like do.

If you haven't noticed, when the US government says something involves "national security", it's code word for taking away more of your freedoms and wealth.

Part of me says band this Chinese spyware from our country, and part of me thinks what about Facebook they do the same thing.

Hopefully it will put a stop to the transmania. But most of the people that talked about this are just people from Tumblr they might go back to that. Or they might create a new sewer.

So I'm not sure how I feel about it I'm not too keen on the government interfering but I don't like the Chinese government interfering either.

I am curious or thinking that there must be some way to allow the company to continue to be owned by China, yet limit the access of sensitive data.

I do not understand why everyone seems to be assuming that collection of sensitive data intrinsically has to be attached to running this type of phone app.

I am for banning programs with eavesdropping potential from secure govt areas, and I am for protecting minors from the addictive nature of the algorithms designed by social media. But I oppose outright bans on anything information related. Even if the information tends to be asinine and useless (which is how I view tiktok).

From what I understand, that is not one of the stated justifications or reasons for this ban.
