I thought the thread was going to be about actual female warriors and not cartoon caricatures equivalent to Jessica Rabbit.
Her persona is that of a female warrior; as I've never met her, can't confirm or deny the plausibility that the persona exists beyond what we read here. I've met a few female airlift pilots, and they didn't impress me as being "overtly" masculine.. they still maintained feminine traits...though more assertive and sure of themselves than the average female I would say.
I don't find girls who think they are guys attractive. I find the concept of dying for what you believe romantic, and self confidence a huge plus. I have an e-crush on UOTG. Totally married, totally with children, totally no greater than my crush on Sofia Vargera, but if I was single... I'd be her huckleberry. My point is what I find attractive has absolutely nothing to do with this thread... mostly its antithesis. Burps aside... UOTG is just a girl. This obsession with amazons I find peculiar... and I want access to its root. I want to know what is appealing about them to those for whom it is.
Liriel doesn't generally use a sword...her weapons are a hand crossbow, throwing spiders, throwing knives, and her magic. When she does, it's about a 3' blade, with a shorter sword or a dirk in her other hand. Arilyn's sword is about 4' long, she uses it with both hands...at about 5'9", it's no issue for her.
Note: the first two pix I posted are nothing like you describe. Liriel is short (about 5'2"), slender almost to the point of seeming delicate (she doesn't top 90lbs), and she doesn't even HAVE a weapon visible. Arilyn is taller (5'9"), lean and wiry, and holds her namesake sword. (Both of those pics are book covers, Tangled Webs and Elfshadow respectively.) The third...yeah, a bit out-there...I just like the artist.
The oils you posted are (*)(*)(*)(*)ing incredible artistically. The fact that they aren't acrylic surprises me frankly. The artistry is not my question... the subject matter was. I was generalizing. I am not offended by the genre... I just don't really get the appeal... I am incredibly old school. I can't tell you how many times I read these. It was "my people" which brought this about... and from a nerd perspective... I like these characters. However their imagery was never more important than their male counterparts. I never sexualized them. I wanted them covered in armor. This is where I diverge.
There is no excuse for being a geek at an advanced age. If you are literally an old timer and still engaging in this pimply-faced adolescent nonsense then the shame it too great for words.
I'll do you the favor of not believing you are an "old timer" and that there is still hope for you yet.
(Actually, neither Liriel nor Arilyn generally wore armor.) I have no idea if they are oil or acrylic (I recall Brom & Lockwood work with both)...Mech Hunter (done as the cover for a Dragon magazine) might have some digital manipulation, also. The first cover for Tangled Webs was terrible...for the second printing, Elaine Cunningham saw Brom's work, and had to suppress a shock of recognition. He got Liriel EXACTLY as Cunningham pictured her. I have all 3 of those books...though only the PH has that cover. (My MM has the dragon-pegasi cover, by DMG has the pening doors" cover.) I think I have all the 1e AD&D books except Oriental Adventures. I even found an early Deities & Demigods a few years ago. (Yes, it was THAT version, with the Cthulu mythos in it!)
