Which only goes to show that if you torture a statistic long enough you can make it admit to anything. What's funny is this is almost the same thing they said years ago.

Well, I am not sure what you mean there Dr. Hawking, because I never provided a definition. The defitniton you provided was quite vague and still arbitrary.

The middle class is not limited in the wealth they can obtain, no one is limited in such potential. Also, most of the "poor" in this nation, based on census bureau data, clearly can provide for themselves at a reasoable level as well, so they also can in the future become wealthy, correct?

LOL, bro, don't try that low-rent, snide, canned sarcastic crap with me, it is soooooo played out and it just makes your logical arguments appear weaker (not that you had anything strong to start with). Additionally, by defending the majority of US poor who receive nearly unfettered entitlements even though they are of sound mind and body and able to work, well then you indeed are suggesting they deserve it.

So hey, "Let's work on your ability to understand real analysis, and then venture forth from there".

Yeah, $250,000 is doing pretty well indeed, so what? People making that much already ay a higher percentage in our progresive tax system.

Yes but I have clearly indicated several times that if we were only taking care of people who are "in a bad situation and need a helping hand", we would have more than enough for them, and I am happy to pay tax for that.

However, that is not the majority of the impoverished. I grew up working-class, and I can literally look at each of my friends and how they did in life, and there is a direct, direct and clear, correlation betwen the choices you make and your lot in life, bottom line.

Go to any welfare office, look arounsd, you'llsee people that are clearly of reasonable physical shape and of sound mind, but they are drug addicts, mothers who squeeze out extra kids specifically to qualify for more money, and simple deadbeats. They are scamming the system, pure and simple, because the don't want to work, and you excuse them.

It''s usually rich, self righteous kids who fancy themselves as progessive liberals with no real experience in the lower classes that make excuses for the willful poor. Anyone who has worked or interacted in these communities knows much better.

I agree they should be cared for, I've said that several times in several posts. Again, my point is that they do not represent the majority of poor. The majority in poverty are there because of their choices, choices that you are accountable for in this nation, that is how it works, and rightfully so, but good libs like you would prefer to apply the culture of victimhood to all of the poor, instead of encouraging them to do for themselves and earn their own way like the rest of us have to, and you want working folks to pay for them to boot.

Oh jeeze, more excuses, more victimhood, more apologism. The whole point of this nation is that previous generations, class, family name, will not stop you from acheiving success if you work hard and make the right choices. Everyone has a chance to graduate high school, get a scholarship, learn a trade, join the military, work for a non-profit, be an entrepreneur... there are many, many options to plant the seeds of success, previous generations have litte to do with this, what a pathetic attempt by you to scapegoat "past generations", again, more blaing everyone except the individual who made the choices they made.

Oh no, except of course that millions of people have in fact pulled trhemselves out of poverty and made a great life for themselves. Again, you make them hapless victims... "it's all they know"... what does that even mean?

    They don't know about college?

They don't know about the military?

    They don't know about trades?

They don't know that opportunity abounds in this nation?

They don't know drugs are bad?

They don't know that unwed teenage motherhood throws your life off track?

Please, stop treating them like chimps. I live in California and I see Mexican immigrants that came from a way, way worse place, knowing little or no english, that come here and make great lives for themselves, seeing phenomenal success...I see it every day. So, these truly poor, third world folks with no resources at their disposal can somehow pull it off, but natural born americans that are already born 100 steps ahead can't?

B.S. Buck, egregious B.S. It is readily apparent toanyone with an iota of observational ability.

A furnished house, adequate calories, and mechanisms of leisure do not equal poverty, no matter how much you think my tax $$ should go to their new copy of Gears of War.

Official poverty metrics are the weight and measure of that phenomena which serve to establish Standards for the Union.

Otherwise, I am not sure what your point is; everyone understands that poverty can be relative, especially in modern economies.

LOL, ok there buddy, it doesn't look very good when you call someone ignorant when you concurrently demonstrate your ignorance of simple concepts.

Your mind is rather simple, like that of a child.

Never did I claim that the poor would be right eating the rich, merely suggesting if people feel wronged sometimes they react violently.

Anyone that feels the federal definition of poverty isn't poverty try living on 14K over a year (with a family of 4), then tell me how you feel. Shoot just sit down one day and try and budget that out... you're welcome to borrow my calculator.

What objection is there to being moral enough to eliminate poverty by bearing true witness to our own laws?

So what? A lot of people have 'stuff' they acquired when times were better. Doesn't matter how many rooms your house has, or how many square feet you live in; if you're broke, you're broke.

Would we need more expensive and means tested welfare if a person could apply for more cost effective unemployment compensation simply for being unemployed?

Why do liberals always claim that someone is saying what the liberal wants to think they said when they never said that? No wonder you're all so utterly confused and unaware of reality.

14K or whatever the number according to the number in the household IS the Federal Govt description of poverty in the USA. When I post that that is what the Federal Govt says constitutes poverty. I am stating a fact, not voicing an opinion. 14k family of 4= poverty, OFFICIALLY. Can a family of 4 live on that amount is a totally different discussion. But obviously it would be very difficult.

    However,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

How much EITC do they get in addition to the $14k earned?
What is the value of the food stamps the family of 4 receives?
How much ADC do they receive for the 2 kids?
How much is their housing subsidy?
How much did Medicaid pay for ALL their free medical needs?
And having never participated in any govt welfare program, I have no idea how many more this $14k family of 4 qualifies to receive. But every penny of that must be added to their $14k, and then we know how much they are living on,,,,,,,,,,,only $14Kof which they EARNED.
Food stamps at $100 per month per person[I have NO idea if that is a reasonable amount or far too little] would be $4800. An EITC of $2000. would add with the food stamps to make their 'effective' income to $20,800. And without a doubt they'd be in much better shape than the family of 4 earning $20,800 and not qualifying for help.

It's a shame because you really bring up some very interesting points after this paragraph, but I feel you need to addressed over this point first. Dude WTH is your problem? I never claimed you said anything, I was merely making a point about the general mood of some of the posts on this thread that 14K per year income isn't poverty. Speaking of unaware of reality, the post was addressed to ANYONE THAT FEELS... just cause you projected that thought onto yourself shows me your the one with utter confusion.

You might just look back through the thread and see that I'm the one that posted the Govt poverty levels. So intentionally or inadvertently you referred to a post of mine.

And I don't recall anyone claiming that $14K for 4 isn't poverty. I read MANY saying that a 3 bedroom house, 2 cars, A color TV in every room and overstuffed kids, ISN'T POVERTY. Not the $14K.

Owning a home doesn't make you not poor. Everyone should have a place to live and home value isn't considered in these statistics.

Not being in an overcrowded home doesn't make you not poor.

Living space doesn't make you not poor.

You shed light on your own insane thinking instead of reality.

What objection can there be to solving official poverty by solving for a natural unemployment rate?

In the USA there are basicaly 2 ways to exit this world. One is to have a pension that covers all healthcare costs. The other is not to have any medical insurance and be in poverty till death.

With a decent healthcare plan you will be able to live out your life well reduce any medical problems and die of medical desiese, injury, or accident. And, you will have money to spend, and enjoy life.

Without healthcare coverage you have the opportunity to go out by accident or by living off the government's healthcare at poeverty levels before you die. And in the process, you will lose all your property and money before this happens. Because, when everyone get old they will need medical treatment. Or someone to pay for it.

In my opinion, we should be getting more bang for our tax bucks; why do we still have an over thirty year war on poverty that is not based on religion? We should have solved poverty by now instead of simply spending money on that form of entitlement spending that has not solved that social dilemma since its inception.

At what point should such a public policy be considered a boondoggle and generational form of theft.

What objection can there be to solving official poverty by solving for a natural unemployment rate?

Yes it does when we measure poverty especially when the left try to claim how helpless and homeless the poor are. What happened to the old adage that the poor were just one paycheck away from being homeless? That NO ONE wants to be poor because it is such a deprived life. Not according to the evidence.
