but not appoint another and just let parliament fight it out until next election. The GG can meet other world leaders.

Not an expert in this field, but harking back to the Whitlam debacle, if the GG punts the PM I think he/she has to direct an election...but from memory, that
was when Frasers mob refused to pass the money bills...which is an automatic
election....different scenario, but same Labor clowns....

The Constitution states that only the GG can appoint ministers. The Prime Minister isn't even mentioned in the Constitution.

Since the PM isn't even mentioned in the Constitution if the GG fires the PM from the PM position there does not have to be an election. This also means that Constitutionally we don't even have to have a PM.

Most of the way the Parliament functions is by convention which just means tradition and so there's no actual legal requirement to do it that way.

And have no PM? And have Tony Abbott and friends try to control parliament? No way, we need someone to keep them in their place.

    But yeah, Gillard should go.

Its a shame the labor thugs used Julia Gillard, as the token woman PM. Also as the sacrifical lamb, in order to save themselves from the backlash, from the voters, regarding the dumping of an elected PM kevin Rudd. Probably the Governer Generals son in law Bill Shorten thought he could, eventually become PM, with no blood on his hands,
Julia Gillard, is not PM material, and the sooner she goes the better for labor, and also the corrupt elements of Labor need to be weeded out and chucked to the kerb. Also Julia telling the media what they can and not write, and her trying to control the media is scary indeed. All this to save her political hide.
Julia should get of her stolen throne she stole from Kevin Rudd. and stop being a pretend PM. Kevin Rudd would be the only pollie standing if they had an election in QLD, And has the support of many and enough Australian for him to be voted in as PM. So it looks like the Labor thugs will just have to swallow their pride and egos, and bring back Kevin Rudd in order to have a lift in the polls, Kevin Rudd as PM would give those involved in his sacking as PM, heaps.

In reality though there is no such thing as an elected PM. That's just what the politically uneducated public thinks. They think that they're voting for the PM when in reality they're voting for a local representative to represent them in parliament. Only the Governor General gets to "elect" ministers.

I'll probably be voting for minor parties for a while. Don't trust either the Libs (never have) or Labor.

I voted Greens and Australian Sex Party last election. I'll vote for whichever minor party I think has the ability to make life hell for the major parties.

Yes, so you tell us every chance you get.

The constitution refers to the GG as HIM/HIS...

Does that make the current GG....gender illegal?

    LOL

The title 'Prime Minister' doesn't technically exist. Even in the UK the PM is actually the First Lord of the Treasury. The leadership position, whatever it be called, is decided by the MPs with the majority and isn't dependent on the GGs approval.

The GG doesn't fire the PM. What the GG does is dismiss Parliament. He/She cannot fire an individual MP.

So explain how Rudd lost the position of PM and Julia Gillard gained it all without parliament being dismissed.

Because only the GG can appoint ministers. The GG legally could have told the Labor party that they were stuck with Rudd as PM.

The GG can play games but at their peril. They can be overruled or dismissed themselves by the Queen.

The Queen has said that she will not meddle with Australian politics.

She appoints the GG and is the only person who can remove them. Should one become irresponsible I don't see she'd have much choice.

There is no Sex Party candidate in my local area so I have to vote Greens in the state and Federal elections.

When Gough was sacked, the Queen didn't even know. Gough rang the palace the morning after he was sacked... and was addressed as "prime minister". They didn't know.

A good mini-documentary here, and Gough explaining the turn of events of that day:

^^ Speaking of Gough - Good Lord, they don't make political advertising campaigns like they used to. This one ushered Gough in. Quite a line-up of notable people in the chorus. Jack Thompson, Bobby Limb, Little Patti, Judy Stone, Noeline Brown, et all...
