Seems like the UN has fallen on hard times in recent years. Is it time for it to go?

Even if the blood of one soldier from the USA is not shed, it's worth keeping the UN just to try to save lives of the American soldiers, if nothing else.

As long as corruption exists, it will stay.

Unfortunately the UN might be too big to fail at this point. Where have we heard that one before?

I'm in favor of scrapping this current UN. They have become way too corrupt. I wouldn't be so opposed to scrapping it and then creating another similar organization. But it would have to be an organization dedicated to strictly humanitarian efforts like feeding & housing. No more bombing & killing and calling it "Humanitarian."

The UN is and always was a projection of American diplomacy.

They are ineffective at best. I see them as patronizing worry warts who run around 'caring' about the rest of the world but do nothing. Look at Rwanda, Mogadishu, etc... Member nations of the UN were forced to sit by and watch atrocious actions being committed but could do nothing to stop them.

Then there are the sanctions. A million sanctions that the nations who get sanctioned don't care about.

    Jan,

His reply was meant to be sarcastic. I don't think he really believes it can be saved.

But I'm sure he will answer for himself.

The UN was founded in 1945 after World War II to replace the League of Nations, to stop wars between countries, and to provide a platform for dialogue. It contains multiple subsidiary organizations to carry out its missions.

It was a perfect organization for the allies against the threat of the USSR and the cold war that was starting. The UN thrived during the Cold War and was useful.

Fast forward to today...where it is a bloated corrupt system. It spends money without heed for economy and it places committees together that obviously hold no meaning to them. The head of the woman's rights committee is Iran...one of the countries where women have the least rights (thatch one example out of many). There's more too. They often pose as useless body of leaders who do not work together. The UN used to consist of Allies- now every country is practically in it, enemy and ally alike. We've all seen those useless sanctions against rogue countries, that didn't slow them down a bit. The rhetoric of the speeches is often over the top, and in the last 10 years often anti-American, ironically since the UN is situated in NYC.

So with all facts considered, it should not be scrapped, but thrown away and burnt as fast as humanly possible. In any case, I haven't understood why the US puts up with the UN as long as it has, we should have withdrawn from it years ago.

Good points. It seems like only the brutal Dictators of the World have gotten much use out of the UN in recent years. All those over-the-top Anti-American hate speeches. I really do think Hitler would love this current UN. How many useful propaganda speeches would he have gotten out of it? The UN just seems so corrupt and lost these days. I think it's time to scrap it. They can go ahead and create another similar organization in its place if they want to,but i wouldn't necessarily support it. Thanks for your great points.

America should cut off funding, withdrawal from the UN, and tell them to find a new place for their farce of an organization.

The inability of Americans to understand what place their country took in the world after 1945 onwards to 2011 and the responsability that goes along with it, pretty much shows why America can't be trusted anymore.

    Sad.

Some of us don't wish to be the new Imperial Government that Spain, France, and England were that intervened in other Countries matters. Nor does our Constitution allow for such stupidity to begin with nor can we afford it! Just because we became dominant Economically and Militarily doesn't mean we have to wave our dick around because it's Erect.

I'm not surprised. We can't even afford us and we're paying 30% of the U.N. budget so pigmie dictators can spew their hate at us on our dime?

    Get rid of it....yesterday!

No need to be so rude, sir.

Please have a look into the following thread: Belgian People!

To adress your question more simplistic: Belgium and it's people have contributed way more to human civilization than the USA -- which is only normal.

And nobody is hating on America, so I really don't understand where this "you America haters" comment comes from either...

Oh, and I hope you realize that the world wide web is a European invention, right? An Anglo-Belgian one for that matter.

I just don't like foreigners saying something about America when they have no personal knowledge. It's like me assuming something about Belgium. No offense, but this sort of thing happens so often on this board that it's gone on my list of pet peeves.

No the internet was not created by anglo-belgians. The UK didn't even start helping on with the inventing of the net until a full two years after America had started the research in 1958. You are referring to the modern internet, which came out in 1993 and was created by a British scientist....who built on the work started by the USA in 1958....

The UK might of helped....but no it certainly did not create the internet.

I call shenanigans until you back this up. Other than waffles, seriously, I don't think I've ever heard of anything coming out of Belgium. The USA's influence, well that's not hard to pin point, but if I really need to put examples out I will. :bored:

The thread you linked to was interesting, I'll read more of it and post on this later if I need to. +rep for compiling all that though, what I've read was interesting so far.

If I was rude you, the board, and mods would know about it. That was moderately bored, nothing more.

Sure. What we all need now is a world that barely agrees with itself denied the means to do so.

As usual, this is the approach that appeals to isolationist Americans.

They have never forgiven Woodrow Wilson for trying a novel approach towards world peace with the League of Nations.
