I have just got one as my old computer died, which is why I was AWOL for a week. I have never had one before and am still figuring it all out.

I keep getting migraines from it, though, and I can't figure out why. The screen is wider than the screen of my old desktop was, and its also rather bright. Its like looking into a bright light.

I have the laptop positioned on my knees and its comfortable, but the screen is always bugging me. I can't work out if it is too bright or whether my eyes are just getting used to the fact that the screen is wider than usual.

    Any ideas?

Also, if I wanted to copy and paste something, without using an actual mouse, how do I use that touch pad thing to do it?

    Any ideas?

Mak you might try adjusting the screen back or towards you to adjust for focus and brightness ,,, but it'll vary from being in the sunlight or inside the house ... other than that , it's just something to get used to .

Also, if I wanted to copy and paste something, without using an actual mouse, how do I use that touch pad thing to do it?

good grief , Mak , they should have showed ya that when ya bought it .... but I got a laser mouse , because I couldn't get used to the pointer on my lap-top , what kind did you buy ? does it have a little red ball in the center of the touch pad ? [/QUOTE]:)

they're all a little bit different , ya know ?

Nah, no ball, just a little sqaure that when you move your finger over it, the mouse moves.
It's so different to my old one. Maybe I should dirty up the screen, lol. That might fix my headaches.

Is there a way to make the screen slightly darker? Some sort of option on the computer I can use?

had this problem, it should have light settings on the control panel for brightness in the start menu

copy and paste has a different technique with the fingers since there is no mouse

That's okay, I have found the area where you change things, like the appearance of the screen etc. Should be there somewhere. :)

When I use my laptop at home it's on a compute desk with a sliding shelf which I use a normal keyboard and a regular mouse. If you use the Fn key next to the left control key and arrow down it should dim the display.

What brand laptop did you get anyway? I'm familiar with Dell and can help more if you need it.

 yeah , I know what you mean about the touch pad mouse being hard to get accustomed to ,,, I finally got a laser mouse with a USB plug-in ,, problem solved on a desk / table ,,, but if it's on your knees , you'll just have to get used to the touch-pad ,, it just takes a bit of practice , this time next month , you'll have it down 100 % , no worries ...

As far as the screen brightness goes , there should be some controls that you could use ,,, maybe in Control Panel on display settings .. try it ..

No Mak ,,, don't mess with the resolution , ok ? STOP...

Mak , we could go back & forth all night , ya know ??

The best advice I could give is to go into the Control Panel ' settings & display ' and take it from there ...

let us know how it's going , ok ? :)

Okay, to use the little pad thingy. There should be two buttons right below the pad, these are the same as right and left buttons on a regular mouse. You can either use the left button to select, or, you can lift your finger off the pad and tap it back down again. If you slide your finger up and down on the right side of the pad it should scroll. To copy & paste hold the left button down and slide your finger across the pad, hit the right click button and take it from there.

I use the pad if I'm surfing on the couch, but for sitting at the table I use a wireless mouse. You might want to invest in a wireless mouse, I have an inexpensive Logitech, and it works great. ;)

    Hope that helps. :)

I also suggest you buy a wireless optical mouse. Another way to adjust brightness or contrast on your laptop is by pressing the Fn key and F7 and F8 to increase and decrease the brightness.

I have a Toshiba as I was told they are they best - and also expensive, which my hip pocket is certainly feeling.

I have an fn key - if that dims the display, how do I brighten it again, if I need to?
    Wait, never mind, answer above!

    Adjust brightness: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows7/Adjust-your-monitors-brightness-and-contrast

    Adjust resolution: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/Change-screen-resolution

Lowering the resolution will make everything bigger in general so try a lower setting.

To use the touchpad: First of all, that little thing that moves on your computer screen when you move the mouse or touchpad is called a "pointer".

The touchpads usually have 4 functions. The square itself can be used to move the pointer. It works much like a mouse except for the way you move the pointer. It has left and right buttons and if you tap the touchpad, that acts as a left click.

To copy and paste something just put the pointer before the text you want to copy, press and hold the left mouse button and move your finger over the text you want to copy and it should select it. Release the left mouse button, then paste the text (right button) wherever you're trying to put it.

I hate touchpads and only use them if nothing else is available. Get yourself a nice laptop mouse. I use a trackball personally because I hate having to drag a mouse all over the place to get it to move.

I’ve worked before with Toshiba as a Tech support and there’s a lot of use for the FN key. Combining FN key to all the F keys are shortcut combinations that could save you time. All of their uses are in the laptops manual.

Indeed: I use one at home and at work.

And, I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Toshiba launched the first laptop onto the market back in the mid '80s.

Yep, I own two Toshiba laptops, one a fancy expensive one that my wife has claimed as her own, and one inexpensive one I purchased at Walmart for a couple hundred bucks. I actually like the inexpensive one better. It's great for portability and surfing the net.

I have worked out how to copy something, but how do I copy from one site and paste to another? I was trying to write a blog last night and I couldn't paste the article I wanted. When I right click it comes up 'paste' in a little box, instead of all the other options I used to have with the old computer. I can select 'paste' but nothing happens.
When I try to copy and paste something from this post, it works, but elsewhere it doesn't...???

Try "Control C" and "Control V", on the keyboard.

    See if that works.

Okay, that worked. Don't know why it didn't work the other way. Now to see if I can still post pictures...
