“An email recently sent by Kansas House Speaker Mike O'Neal (R-Hutchinson) to his Republican colleagues appears to endorse a controversial prayer that some say calls for the untimely death of President Obama.

"Pray for Obama. Psalm 109:8." That's the slogan an email from O'Neal refers to, a phrase that's become popular in some circles on bumper stickers and other merchandise. The bible passage itself reads, "Let his days be few; and let another take his office." The real controversy arises in the next verse of Psalm 109, however, which continues, "May his children be fatherless and his wife a widow."

In a message accompanying the email, O'Neal writes:

"At last -- I can honestly voice a Biblical prayer for our president! Look it up -- it is word for word! Let us all bow our heads and pray. Brothers and Sisters, can I get an AMEN? AMEN!!!!!!"

O'Neal's office has insisted that his use of the psalm was referring only to the first segment, which they say simply shows support for Obama to be replaced as president, via an election, as soon as possible.

Back in 2009, The Huffington Post's Jason Linkins suggested that Psalm 109:8 was "the latest thing in 'Debasing The Institutions You Pretend To Hold Dear In Order To Suggest That President Barack Obama Should Be Murdered Without Actually Coming Right Out And Saying So.'"

In some circumstances, endorsement of Psalm 109 with regards to Obama has been dealt with seriously. Last year in Florida, a corrections officer was suspended after highlighting the passage and referring to it as the "Obama prayer."

While O'Neal isn't apologizing, outrage over the content of his email has sparked a petition drive calling for his immediate resignation.

O'Neal's email supporting Psalm 109.8 wasn't the only email that emerged to stir controversy either. Earlier this month, O'Neal apologized for an email, also forwarded to his GOP colleagues, that referred to First Lady Michelle Obama as Mrs. YoMama and compared her to the Grinch.”

O’Neal should resign immediately for this disgusting display of hatred. It is the same toxic cowardly type of invitation that got Gabrielle Giffords shot in the incredibly volatile politcal climate in Arizona as she was elected to Congress over a rabid T-bagger veteran whose profile shows him with an automatic rifle and inviting everyone to “a shooting event” the following week. And Sarah Palin’s ad showing her looking into th sights of a gun was also grotesque and distrubing.

We should be over this sort of political threatenign stance by now with the attempted assassination of Giffords and also the killing of an abortionist, shot in the back, in a church during services. We are supposed to be a civilized nation, and any notifications such as O’Neal’s should be answered with a demand for his immediate resignation.

Any normal person that is involved in public life, and sends such an atrocious thing, should resign without fanfare and get himself out of public life altogether.

I think it is a clear call to violence and someone disturbed or highly gullible will take it seriously. The ultra sick part of it is in the use of a psalm to deliver a message to other republicans; a duplicate of the shooting of Giffords where a disturbed young man bought a gun, bullets, and prepared for the day Giffords was to meet her constituents. He ended by shooting her and others surroundng her including a judge, and a little girl.

I distrust anything violent in words or implication by an elected public official or anyone in the media that would reach vast amounts of the public, as in Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly who ranted on about how someone should shoot a certain abortionist: and some one DID!

I think O'Neal's emails were defintiely malicious, uncalled for, and repugnant to any normal person. He should go.

1) No one is saying that there aren't psychos out there in the public hinterlands. It is another reason for adult, constrained political rhetoric that does not seek to urge someone else to commit a crime.

3) A silly quote like "tragedies like that just happen" is definitely an extreme rationalization to take any responsibility for it away from the T-baggers. When you realize this, you have reached adulthood.

Does not speak of "his days" in office but in life. The term "another" does not speak of an election, but of his VP taking office.

Also the e-mail speaks of Obama's children "being fatherless" and his wife as "being a widow" proving that murdering the president was what O'Neal was talking about. Any other interpretation is pure rubbish.

3) The emial speaks for itself...another subliminal message for some highly gullible radical to go out an assassinate the president making his children fatherless and his wife a widow. "Some" call it a wish for Obama's death, by Huffington's figuring, and the "next verse" in Psalms (not the one cited by O'Neal) says something else.

I can read the Huffington piece just as well as you can and nowhere in the post does it allege that the email cites anything other than Psalms 109.8 (which calls for an end to "his days in office"). Please stop lying about this.

of Psalms. Prove your lie.

Quoting from the Bible for subliminal messaging to the mentally weak is out of line for anyone, especially in this case because O'Neil used it as a solid verification of the 'just cause' he was obsessed with: murdering the president. Proof of this is the following:

When you say politics had nothing to do with it - are you saying he just picked Giffords and the people there with her at random? That he had no idea who she was and hadn't heard any rhetoric to encourage his sick mind to do what he did? That's quite a coincidence, isn't it? That he just took his gun and went out looking for some random people to kill and just happened to turn up at the shopping center where her meeting with her constituents had been advertised to be? The left-wing kooks are citing words that aren't in the email. So in other words, the email doesn't pray for his death. While I can certainly understand the desperation liberals are feeling that lead them to attempting to manufacture a controversy, there simply isn't one here.
