Afghan resistance is not relevant here, we're talking about the Taliban, the old infamous minority Pashtun regime essentially installed by Pakistan with the support of foreign Islamist volunteers. The HR abuses of the Taliban was quite evidently regime sanctioned standard practice and not the work of the odd scum subjected to disciplinary procedures. A central part of the Taliban terror regimes modus operandi was to make sure everyone knew what punishment to expect so any "disciplinary procedures" would certainly have been made widely known.

I don't blame them for the frustration in fighting terrorists, but there are better ways to deal with that than this crap.

 

I still can't get over the fact that people believe these soldiers should be punished for peeing on these people after they had KILLED them. It makes absolutely no logical sense whatsoever. For some reason, someone has got us believing that doing this gives our enemies more ammo to recriluit with. I would think killing them would be enough in itself. If we want to be nice and stop the Taliban from recruiting then we should simply leave Afghanistan all together. However, I thought our goal was to punish the individuals who supported and protected thouse who killed 3,000 innocent civilians. Perhaps we should change our strategy to appeasement instead of war. Anytime someone is upset with us we should instantly issue apologies and hope they are enough to keep the upset group from recruiting followers to kill more of us?

They are professionals, their enemies were dead weren't they.

There's this concept called 'standards' and maintaining them. Maybe you've heard of it. Drop those standards and you lose respect, credibility and any pretense to the moral high ground. There, I think that just about covers it.

 

American soldiers live under a strict set of rules of conduct. Called the UCMJ. It states, along with many other rules, no desecration of bodies. Once a soldier has killed the enemy, that body is a non-combatant. And the soldier is far better off looking for LIVE enemy than hosing down dead ones.

The stories about our actions helping the enemy recruit troops are BS. The enemy is not in any way bound by truth. Whatever atrocity they wish to accuse us of, they will make up. And they can stage atrocities more damming according to the recruits they want.
