Thank you - same back to ya. I knew you had a good reason to ask the question - I just wanted to make sure I was addressing not just the question, but the reason behind it as well. I think we're living proof that, as humans, we can disagree, yet still share a mutual respect for each other's viewpoints. It's always a pleasure debating with you.

You have a very satisfying life, I bet. It's wonderful to make an impact on young adults, and give them the tools they need to accomplish their goals. It sounds like Alice is in a very satisfying field, too. It's a shame that everyone can't do the kind of work they love. Just think how much more pleasant we'd all be to each other if we were all happy and fulfilled.
Some people should be child free - that way they're unencumbered to do other important things. Sounds like you did plenty of those! I taught high school for a while, but it just wasn't what I wanted to do. So I got married, went to grad school and had a baby. That pretty much shot a career in anthropology - especially with a specialization in primitive tribes, lol. So I stayed home with the child, and later went to work with the hubby.
He's going to stay in school at least long enough to get a Masters (history is his passion), but he's looking forward to getting into the family biz when he gets out. We made him our priority, and I think that's what you have to do. Mostly you just have to let them know that you love them - and that you expect a certain standard of behavior from them. I think we just got lucky. He's much better than either of his parents - we were real hell raisers.
My son has been easy to raise. He's a junior in university, and still 18. I'm sure he parties some, I mean, who doesn't when you're young - but he must keep it under close control, because he makes straight A's. Maybe I wouldn't have enjoyed motherhood so much if he'd been a hellion, lol.
Before my son was born, I was about as maternal as an alley cat - never wanted kids. But for some reason, when I got pregnant, and when he was born, I lost my effing mind. He became the most important thing in the world, and I'da killed anyone who threatened him harm. I think that most women have that instinct, even if they don't realize it. I never liked kids till I had one, and still don't care for too many other kids, lol.
Thanks - it's always hard. Worse since he's the only one we have. But at the same time, there's something wonderful about watching him become independent. He like home, but he's always itching to get away...and that is as it should be. We raise them to leave.
Sundays are bittersweet around here. My son comes home from college nearly every Friday, but then on Sunday we have to let him go back. So we spend part of Sunday worrying about him getting back safely, and the other part missing him. :)
As hiippie I was once told you only have one true enemy to worry about everything else you can defeat. The one true enemy "TIME". If there was another call to take to the streets I would try but I doubt if I could keep up
