While Im sure that the ignorant $15 per hour wage has already caused people to lose their jobs, this one is kind of a biggie. The UC Berkeley has announced that several hundred jobs will have to be terminated.

IMO that is a hoot since Im sure that a goodly number of the far left from Berkeley were rabid supporters of the $15 wage.

Stupid ideas that are not thot thru like the min wage hike come back and bite people in the ass.

I really do not understand why right wingers constantly ridicule the idea of being paid an adquate wage, and then turn right around and support demogogues like Trump who pander to the frustration of working people whose standard of living is flat or falling.

The problem with the minimum wage is that there are many jobs that need to be done that cannot justify the minimum wage. The problem with many "right wingers" is that they are apparently indifferent to the suffering of low wage workers.

Because the idea that you can arbitrarily set that wage without accounting for market forces is juvenile policy.

They are not eliminating the jobs because of the MW. They are eliminating them because the state underfunded the university by about $150M, and they mostly plan on letting natural attrition reduce those position without them having to go out a fire all of the people.

Why cant leftwingers understand that min wage jobs are not a lifes work? They are mainly for teens, and someone that wants just a little extra money from a second job.

Problem is there are many jobs that start out at $8 or $9 and hour. And these are manufacturing, factory jobs that people do do as a living.
What are all these college graduates who cant find jobs suppose to do to earn a living until they can find one?
Hopefully before the next group of college grads start looking for jobs that still aren't there.
The reason why the argument for increase min wage is growing is because a lot of people are doing these jobs for a career.

It's a weird thing. Right after the unions get the hikes they campaigned for, they then quietly campaign for carve out exemptions for themselves, even though right before this they were proudly waving this professionally printed signs
    [IMG]
The Los Angeles City Council isn’t currently planning to further discuss a proposal exempting union members from the southern California city’s new minimum wage, despite the proposal having the backing of labor unions.

The Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, did not respond to requests for comment.

“The companies are coerced to making the practical decision to unionize, because it’s in the corporate interest to lower their wages,” he continued. “It’s in their interest to unionize, but it’s more difficult to see how it’s in the interest of the workers.”

    [The dirty bastards]

“The reasons why the unions would want an exemption is because if you have an exemption for unions, then … [it gives] labor intensive businesses that have a lot of low-wage workers … an incentive to unionize because if they unionize, they might be able to lower their labor rates by 10 to 15 percent more,” he said.

    [rooster suckers]

Because businesses are anticipating higher labor costs, James Sherk, a research fellow in labor economics at The Heritage Foundation, said an exemption for unionized workers makes unions appear to be the more enticing—and cheaper—option for businesses.

    [Tar/Feathers]

San Francisco, Chicago and San Jose, Calif., all included exemptions for union members in ordinances raising their minimum wages.

    [well of course they did]

Then there are businesses like the one my son works for.
He is the district manager over four small restaurants each in a different city. The populations range from 6000 to 18,000. The owner does okay for himself but is no multi-millionaire.
They employ mostly teens and even college students. They work around their school schedules. The owners are very community oriented, always donating to school functions and the like.
If they have to raise the minimum wage too much at one time it WILL hurt them. I just discussed this with my son the other day. They already recently had to raise prices because of ACA.
It may not seem like much to others but companies like this possibly having to close is not good for these communities.
They are a source of employment for young people. As they move on others take their place.

Racism is 'part' of why they buy it. There are other factors, but racism is how MANY VOTES are ultimately garnered by politicians on the Right.

Johnson - If you can convince the lowest White man.jpg

And to know even better, just look where the BULK of Donald Trump's support rests. (Not that Trump 'must' be an abject racist per se, but that appealing TO racists attracts their support.) Eventually, doing that will NOT be effective for the GOP; demographics are changing significantly as we speak.

With no logical reason for increasing the min wage by a large percent, I see the argument can always fall back on racism. Pathetic, and a total lie since the largest percentage of teens working in fast food joins are white.

You don't post a link of course because if you did you've have to reveal that the layoffs have nothing to do with any proposed wage increase.

No matter what the lefts excuse is, if UC Berkeley is short of money and the cost of wages are going up to $15, logic dictates that the increase cost with less money to spend will cause layoffs. The $15 wage min only accelerates the layoffs.

People NEED a 'living' wage, no matter their ethnicity. And really... that goal should be paramount at this point.

Tell that to the landlord. Whether it's a life's work is irrelevant to the fact that bills must be paid. Has nothing to do with the left. It's common sense. And please stop lying.

How many times do rightwingnuts need to be told that a minimum wage job IS life's work for many people. Do you not even acknowledge the disabled Walmart workers who greet you? Those that want to be PERSONALLY RESPONSIBLE, but are simply not able to compete in the job market? Those that did not get to go to college, through no fault of their own? Those that went to college and found a $200,000 debt at the back end? You call it a stepping stone, whereas others call it existence. Why are you even bothering to kick those people below you off the ladder? You are obviously headed for the big time. Don't let the underprivileged veer you from your path to glory. Only if you think that your work is more onerous than the average low wage earner, should you be arrogant about your income.

Let me see if I got your argument straight. It's rather hard because of a bunch of irrelevant emotions, so correct me if I'm wrong.

    1. There are people who are just dumb muscle.
    2. Dumb muscle isn't worth much.
    3. Therefore, employers should be forced to pay dumb muscle more than they are worth.

    Is that the general idea?

And he's still ignoring it. The layoffs mentioned in the OP have NOTHING to do with minimum wage

hmmm, so maybe the policies put into affect by the EPA, Dodd/Frank, ACA and other punitive regulations/laws should be assessed and abolished as they actually hurt the labor market.

With entry level jobs basically being the only new jobs, driving up the min wage is not the answer. It's yet another feel good Democrat policy for a brief moment of feel-good, but long term disaster.

No, we're just pretending that UCB doesn't have enough money to pay their workers no matter what the minimum wage law is.

So let's raise it to 20! :woot:
