Russia has always had a reputation of a country full of people with a drinking problem but the issue is becoming critical. More than 30% of Russians drink themselves to death and it has resulted in a low life expectancy compared to other similar countries.

What do people think about this?

 

Alaska also has a very high rate of alcoholism... maybe its those long winter nights.

 

They should drink more wine. Those cold nights do make a nice alcoholic drink more pleasant.

 

That could be. But also Russians have have the additional unfortunate plight of having to live in Russia.

 

It's a cold place, I'd be drinking warm tea all day.

 

Better to live a happy life and live a few less years than to live one's whole life in a nanny State.

Alcohol-attributable deaths as a percentage of total deaths is actually only 10-14% in Russia.

I think there is most certainly a correlation between a lower standard of living and excessive drinking. But obviously the climate plays a role too since drinking is not a problem in other warmer countries with low standards of living. I also think the past legacy of Soviet Communism was not good for the family structure in Russia either.

 

In the USSR, even if there wasn't enough bread and toilet paper, there was ALWAYS enough vodka.

It's probably from having to stand in those long bread lines. Instead of just standing for hours being bored, bring a bottle(or two) of vodka and make it a party.

Can you provide the source? I am interested. 30 pc seems incredible. Alchohol inducement of death can take considerable years bar a single insane episode. Given the timescale, the 30 percent would be so high as to raise questions as to why other causes of death are so low? No population with such an alcohol intake could surely escape other ailments and accidents? Something doesnt add up.

 

Your headline is pure sensationalism and is not true. It is not 30% of Russians drink themselves to death; it is 30% of deaths in Russia attributed to alcohol. See the difference?

Aside from that, it is absolutely true that drinking vodka is a National pastime in Russia. Big time.

 

How about the Netherlands? I bet countries where smoking is favored over drinking has less issues.

 

Dutch are sensible drinkers and smoke more then they drink. However, they smoke less then Chinese but drink more than Americans and less then Finns, and also drink less then Russians but smoke more than Portugese. Still, Dutch drink more than Indonesians and smoke more than Kazakhs while drinking less than French and smoking more that English.
