When I saw the Swedish girl I thought this very likely may be the only hope for the planet. We now have three tipping points - that is things that may make climate disaster suddenly take a catastrophic leap. It is true that if one of those 'tips' we could all be dead in 5 years but hopefully will live a little longer. Scientists in charge of this have given up on any hope that our Governments will wake up in time. They have given up hope that we will be prepared to make the changes we need for the planet to survive and the danger is a lot nearer than even the last Report suggested. Most Climate scientists believe we have far less than till the end of the century. 2030 or for the more optimistic 2040 seems to be more how long scientists think we have but still we will not wake up and do something. Most of the marvellous ideas for stopping it have been proved not to work though there is some work which is suggesting we could manage by some means to destroy the carbon up in the sky but it apparently needs loads of money. The 0.01% do not want to give it as they have booked a place at the artic. Scientists are working on the possibility now of managing to put a few people there to hopefully be survivors of human beings, accepting most of us will die. Some of the 0.01% have apparently build massive underground living areas - whether they will be any use for living in for a few hundred thousand years is another question.

The only hope I think there probably is, is if children face the grief of the reality that we have chosen not to do work we have known we needed to do at least since the early 20th Century if they were to have a life and we have chosen not to do it so they are unlikely to see old age or to be able to have children of their own believing there is a world where their children will be able to achieve anything but a terrible death.

Children should never have to face such a trauma but I think possibly children facing that and telling us what they think is possibly the only chance for this world.

    Planting more trees would help.

So would prohibiting environmental damage as a way of externalizing corporate costs.

Many of us do not like the schemes that simply extract money from the general public.

IMO importing populations that raise lots of goats is also a bad idea. Goats pull plants up by the roots, facilitating the spread of deserts.

The goat thing is not mentioned enough in the climate change debate.

    Glad you brought it up.

If we have any interest in saving the world and we do not put everything into it now, then it simply will no longer be here and that could happen any time between now and later in the Century. That is how serious it is. I think what stops people doing things about it is a mixture of being too busy trying to keep going and the fact that the reality is so depressing they feel they must shut that out to get on with the next thing which needs to be done.

The situation is far far more serious than you must know if you think a few trees will change it. In order to save the world we need to make massive change and make it now. Scientists are pretty agreed that we now cannot avoid substantial climate destruction but may if we work now be able to stop it destroying the entire world but most give only about a ten year window to achieve that, It must be started now. It will be too late crying tomorrow.

Most scientists believe the bolded has been shown not to work. So you talk of money. Our Governments have known at least since the thirties what we are doing and particularly the general public has known since the 70's. The choice Governments have made is to give the people of this time or possibly the 0.1% a period of plenty irrelevant of the reality that their comfort will cost those who follow their lives. Now we still have a chance if we get moving now and one of the tipping points does not hit causing catastrophe in the meantime.
Some Scientists say that a way has been found whereby they can get co2 out of the atmosphere. However this requires massive investment and a change in our lifestyle now. A suggestion made was that we must top all wars and put the money we would have used for our armaments into saving rather than destroying our world.

It is a choice we have to make now. Like I said the children of now, the people who may never see old age because of our inaction are both the ones with the greatest right to complain and possibly those we will most listen to. That we still have the opportunity and still are not making the necessary changes appears to suggest that humans have lost the ability of caring for their young - something which always leads to extinction.

I think the main problem is that people simply are not aware of just how serious the situation is and I shared that ignorance only a few weeks ago.

Children—can’t pass basic science, but will lead us to the promised land. Really?

Why am I not surprised you would mock children rather than want to save their lives. Like I said, human beings appear to have lost its ability to care for its children. Such a situation always leads to extinction and that is where we are headed.

Once those children stop living with mommy and daddy and have to put food on the table and earn a living they will change their tune. So now we have between 5-12 years before we're all gonna die? That should make for a great Hollywood disaster movie.

There will be no one here to do any disaster movies. Too many people put their comfort above the right of their children to a life.

    Well said

The tattooed womens studies graduate serving me coffee at Starbucks - you know, the one with pink hair and a ring in her nose - is barely able to operate the latte machinery much less save the planet

Roe v. Wade was a major milestone in this development.

LOL. The human race faces extinction because I drive my car to Florida to take my loved ones to Disney World? If that’s the case, then we will all perish from insanity long before we reach extinction from climate change.

Damn! Children’s lives as blackmail, just so the progressives can lord over us for our own good. God, save us from the doomsayers before we are all doomed.

    Ok an update

    https://morningstaronline.co.uk/art...strike-against-climate-change-hits-50-schools

I agree only a socialist policy will work to undo the harm that the elite have done to our world. There is no question that it is capitalism and in particular neo liberalism which has brought us to this point.

Here he has a go at David Zuzuki and Chris Hedges for a) plagiarising him and b) not having the ability to be honest about just how bad it is as they live in comfort rather than waking people up

So children now are striking for their right for a life.

About ten years ago, I distinctly remember that we had ten years left to save the planet from climate change. Now it is ten years later, and we still have a ten-year window of opportunity. You got me good. Now government schools have brainwashed kids into this doomsday scenario. A tax on carbon is a tax on breathing. It seems the only way we can solve climate change is to reduce the world's population by 90%, submit to the edicts of the United Nations and let the government dictate every aspect of our lives. At least there will be plenty of soylent green to eat.

No it was 20 years ago and these years were gone in 2008 and we no longer have the ability to stop major and possibly finite destruction of this planet. What you were told then was true. You just have not kept up.

So today 15,000 British kids went on school strike as did other kids around the world. This is a worldwide thing. Our Government , UK has become worse not better since the Paris accord and your Government has given up. You will be lucky to find any scientist who still does not accept now that we are experiencing climate change. The only question that is left is whether we can get to it in time to stop complete human extinction and how long we have left to achieve that. You may believe that you will be dead and have no care for those who come after and the kids know that and that is why they have started worldwide going on strike from school.

We did have a discussion on Newsnight tonight and what I would say about it is that they still are not accepting how little time they have. Go look on You tube, listen to Scientists who know what they are talking about and they believe we have very little time to put things in order. For many they believe the possibility, the time to put it right is still there but they believe as strongly that we are going to stay asleep and let it happen. However others feel we are unlikely to have sufficient time. If all the ice melts at the artic, and technically that is already so, don't ask me why, I just heard it. However when all the ice melts from the artic not only will we have massive sea rise making lots of land disappear but we will have almost immediately, within 6 weeks or so a global rise in temperature of about 1 degree which sounds little but has a massive effect as well as an enormous rise in Methane and may then go into total destruction. That could happen at any time.

Now Guy McPherson who was in the two videos I put up believes it is already two late. He has believed it was too late since 2002 which is 6 years earlier than the 20 years we were told we had left then to act and so avoid irreparable damage - and be very clear, we have not avoided it. We are already experiencing the results of not acting and even if we at last get moving they will still get worse before we could stabilise what was left. McPherson believes that by 2026 the only living thing on this planet will be bacteria though obviously he hopes he is wrong. Why does he think this? Well it is because of something called 'global dimming'. They have found that all the stuff we chuck up every day for some reason causes a masking effect to global warming. This is because by the way other things have progressed we should be much hotter, much more into climate destruction than we are. It is believed that it is this masking that is stopping this which puts us into a catch 22 position. If we do what we need to do to avoid climate disaster and human extinction and stop putting all these Co2 into the sky, we will then reach a point where we will stop this masking and then we will see a global temperature rise of about 4 or 6 degrees and Armageddon.

I was chatting about this with a Jehovah's Witness a few days ago and she was saying of course this is Armageddon, and I thought OMG is this why the US will do nothing about Climate Disaster. It was bad enough knowing they were interested in getting WW3 started in Israel but perhaps they even could want the extinction of us all just so they could have their fantasy of Rapture. I am sort of being darkly satirical but I would not put it past them.

We obviously have to make the environment changes and we need to make them very quick as even 'dimming' will not slow the onslaught for much longer but given that us clearing up the environment will take away the masking effect, we need something to help clear up the atmosphere. The only possibility I have heard there is this new way they think they have found which can clean the atmosphere. The scientist claimed it would be successful - not necessarily true, but he believes it has shown that it would be but it is enormously expensive. He was the one who suggested we get countries to stop wars and to invest the money we would have spent on armaments on this instead. Our kids have the right to demand that.

McPherson gave as a suggestion for what may give rise to it, the failure of the corn crop in the US. Another reason suggestion I have heard is the economy massively affecting industry in say Europe. I am not sure how the corn failure leads to it rather than famine but the stopping of Industry would stop the masking effect of global dimming.

Anyway it is our choice, If we want to make sure the kids of today have a much shorter life, carry on as we are now with our heads in the sand. If we, as a species has not lost all care in our children, wake up before it is too late, which it already might be.
