The fear and hate-mongering that served the GOP well from 1980 to 2008 has come to an end. Along with the majority of voters who have turned their backs on the Republican Party and the even more conservative extremists of the Tea Party, major advertisers are shunning inflammatory right-winger favorites like Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity. While it is true that a large audience hangs on and believes every comment made by people like this, these listeners actually represent only a small percentage of the American public. The offensive statements and out-right lies spoken by men (and women) of the ultra-conservative media have scared top advertisers away, and cut deeply into the earnings of broadcasters carrying such programming. Conservatives and neo-conservatives will undoubtedly view these boycotts by advertisers as unlawful censorship. This is because they believe only conservative factions should be permitted to use purchasing power to sway political viewpoints broadcast over the public airwaves. It would appear that the comments by Limbaugh and the like offend the sensibilities of most Americans, but the opinions offered by MSNBC, CNN, etc. do not. I'm just wondering what evidence you have to back up this claim and how you think these neocons would make the argument. I mean if they are going to call it unlawful, what's the remedy? Go into your house and force you to patronize the advertisers? I'm not sure I understand this part of your OP.
The conservatives and neo-conservatives have a long history trying to use boycotts to pressure advertisers on what programming is acceptable and what is not. But they weep and wail when it steps on programming they favor, saying this censorship robs them of their First Amendment right to freedom of speech and choice. Anyone participating in message board discussions over the years has seen this happen.
If he keeps driving away broadcasters' advertising revenue, he will be history. Without Rush telling you what to think, you misguided conservatives will be lost, forever lost.
Your and your fellow traveller's mental image of what America is or should be has been an experiment in excess which has undeniably taken America on a left turn detour toward a dead end these past fifty years or so, but the pendulum has swung about as far as it can. And with the impending dissolution of the Obama regime we will see Conservative leadership take the country back to the path that is more in line with what has been tried and true and proven to be the right path for America to once again be successful. And yes, I mean fifty years because, in spite of five GOP presidents in that time we, as a people, have only now begun to see the fruit from the far-leftist tree which was planted in the 1960's with LBJ's disastrous Great Society reforms, Viet Nam, the liberal media, radicals like Bill Ayers, the wildly radical Cloward-Piven strategy and many other strange fruits. Once we take a look at exactly what all these leftist/Progressive 'innovations' have done to this country the recoil and the backlash will be breathtaking.
