As a teen I saw the movie starring Humphrey Bogart and Katharine Hepburn. I had no idea it was based on a true story. This tells the story of the German ship that was the target of Bogart who had to be browbeat to do the job by Katherine.

A synopsis of this youtube is that the German ship was built first in German but bolted together not riveted. It was taken apart and transported by ship to Africa. It was put on the railroad in Africa that came short of the full trip. The final leg used humans to carry the ship in crates. The Germans built it to patrol Lake Tanganyika a huge lake some 600 km long. As to Bogart sinking it, that is not accurate. But the Germans did scuttle the ship that carried 3 turret mounted guns on the ship. Later the scuttled ship was raised and has sailed since then. It still sails the lake carrying passengers and goods. It is the oldest such vessel on Earth.

A good documentary can also be found on Amazon.prime for no cost.

The Germans constructed the ship in 1913 and then WW1 started so the ship was not much on the minds of the Germans.

The ship is 187 feet long so imagine the African porters carrying this heavy vessel in 5000 crates.

History is wonderful and i hope those who also enjoy history like this information.
