Did he really carry Florida? Like Hillary he did win the popular vote. Should he just let it go?

Al Gore Tells Bill Maher That He Should Have Been President: ‘I Think I Carried Florida’
The former vice president under Bill Clinton sat down with Maher on his ‘Real Time’ program to discuss climate change, the 2000 presidential election, and President Trump.

Al Gore believes that he should have been President of the United States.
In lieu of relitigating the 2000 presidential election, which George W. Bush narrowly won over Democratic opponent Gore after a semi-recount in the deciding state of Florida, here’s a good column by New York Magazine’s Jonathan Chait on the “rigged” recount, as well as The New York Times’ collective reporting on the recount, including the finding that ballots by black voters were tossed out in far greater numbers than any other demographic, and a “comprehensive review” of the uncounted Florida ballots revealing that Bush would have won even if the Supreme Court would have allowed a manual recount in the four contested districts.
And yet, Gore is still convinced that he won the state of Florida—and by extension, the election.

During a climate change discussion on Real Time with Bill Maher, the titular host asked Gore, who’s doing the rounds promoting his climate change awareness follow-up documentary An Inconvenient Sequel: Truth to Power, “So when the sea levels rise, obviously we could lose Venice. We could lose Florida. And who would know better about losing Florida?” cracked the comedian, to groans and boos from the crowd.
“Actually, I think I carried Florida,” fired back Gore. “But that’s another…we won’t go there.”

Later on during their one-on-one discussion, Maher asked Gore about his visit to Trump Tower during the transition period, where he reportedly spoke to both President-elect Trump and his daughter, Ivanka, about the threat of climate change—a conversation that apparently fell on deaf ears, as Trump would later pull the U.S. out of the Paris climate agreement, an accord between 195 countries calling for each to set its own individual goals in lowering greenhouse gas emissions by 2020.

“Yes I did, and I talked to the then-President-elect and that conversation continued after he went into the White House, and I thought there was a chance he might come to his senses—but I was wrong,” said Gore. “And then, when he made his speech pulling out of Paris, I really was concerned that some other countries might use that as an excuse to pull out themselves, but the very next day, the entire rest of the world redoubled their commitment to the Paris Agreement as a way of saying, ‘We’ll show you, Mr. Trump.’”
During the tail end of their chat, the host came back to the topic of the 2000 presidential election, drawing a line between Gore winning the popular vote that year and Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton winning the popular vote over Trump by nearly 3 million votes.
“When you won/lost the election, you got 500,000 more votes than the guy who took over. Hillary got three million more votes. This trend is not going in the right direction. This thing where we [Democrats] get the most votes and they get to be president, that’s a pattern now,” offered Maher.
“Well, I do think it’s time to get rid of the Electoral College,” Gore replied. “But even more importantly than that, we have to get big money out of politics. The lobbyists and fat-cat contributors hacked our democracy before Putin hacked our democracy, and we need to defend it and put the people back in control.”

If Palm Beach County hadn't had used the butterfly ballot (which caused thousands of people to mistakenly vote for Pat Buchanan), Gore would've won Florida.

    Period. End of story. :salute:

Very interesting, when the gop wins elections, democrats act like brats and revolt. When a dem wins an election, the gop accepts the results and moves on. Why can't you dems just be mature adults for once?

Gore one the national popular vote by over half a million votes and still lost to Bush Jr.

And there was no media tempest. No continued election after the election then.
    Imagine that.

Al Gore did not carry his home State of Tennessee, how sad is that.

I watched the show - Bill Maher made a joke about losing Florida to rising oceans - and quipped "You know all about losing Florida" - and Gore replied, "Actually, I think I won Florida" - but it was a quip and the discussion continued about global warming.
It was NOT sour grapes from Gore.
We'll never know who really won - the stacked Supreme Court stopped the recount.
We do know Gore got 500,000+ more votes overall.

algore the hypocritical leftist hoaxer should have had better lawyers. His lawyers shamefully tried to get the military votes erased. algore

Fact is, the world really would be in imminent, existential danger from global warming if everyone consumed as much fossil fuel energy as Gore does.

Would have been interesting to see 9/11 and its aftermath with Gore at the helm.

It is impossible for the Supreme Court to do anything "illegal" since the Supreme Court is the final law of the land with power over everyone and everything, just like most Democrats want it. By definition, anything the Supreme Court does is legal because long ago the Supreme Court self declared itself the final authority over everything.

We know who won Florida. Bush did three times. Gore failed at trying to sue his way into the WH.

The reason Al Gore gave up his Senate Seat in Tennessee for the 1992 presidential election was because he was not going to be re-elected. He got lucky when Clinton won.

Al Gore would have been elected in 2000 if he had carried Tennessee and if Clinton had carried Arkansas.

If a president and vice president cannot carry their own home states in a presidential election, what does that say about them and their party?

He lost either way. Period. End of Story. He would have been a better President than Bush I think, and he fell off the environmental cliff more as a way of remaining relevant than because I think he truly believes half the crap he says.

Why bring up Al Gore's loss in 2000? There are big differences between 2000 and 2016.

Hillary's loss was the culmination of a long slide in Democrat popularity in the country. (Republican majorities in the House and Senate, 35 Republican governors, 1000 state seats lost). All she had was media popularity.

Hillary did not lose of close election like Al Gore. Al Gore lost by 5 electoral votes. He lost his home state of Tennessee (11 votes) and Clinton's home state or Arkansas (6 votes). A win in either state would have put him in the White House.

Gore had the right to ask for a re-count in Florida which confirmed his loss there. As a good loser, he conceded when the Supreme Court backed up the vote.

Hillary lost by 80 electoral votes, a convincing loss. She was never in contention on election night. The will of the people spoke. In spite of that, She was not a gracious loser. Neither were her supporters.

They have all crossed over into being crackpots.

The losers are forgetting Ralph Nader who ran in Florida and got 90,000 votes--votes which have overwhelmingly gone to Al Gore, giving him the state's electoral votes and the White House.

Perot cost H Bush the election and Nader cost Gore the election. It would be interesting to explore the Gary Johnson effect in the rust belt states.

The 3rd party guys often make the election outcome exactly oppose from what their supporters would have wanted between the 2 major candidates.

Nader was another environmentalist who caused massive harms. His war on the Corvair cut off the USA having smaller but viable compact cars to compete with the Europeans and Japanese. This was such a bitter experience for GM that GM reversed its politics to also using the government to try to destroy competitors, rather than trying to make better cars. It is a very interesting era in the US auto industry with massive and permanent consequences.

Several media organizations did a detailed recount considering various approaches to the "hanging chads", Bush won.
