    Australia accused of 'excessive and
    unnecessary' secrecy
    Sat, June 19, 2021
CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — Australia’s suppression of information seen as pivotal to a free and open media is at the center of accusations that the country has become one of the world’s most secretive democracies.

Last week, a former Australian spy was convicted over his unconfirmed role as a whistleblower who revealed an espionage operation against the government of East Timor.

It’s the latest high-profile case in a national system in which secrecy laws, some dating back to the colonial era, are routinely used to suppress information. Police have also threatened to charge journalists who exposed war crime allegations against Australian special forces in Afghanistan, or bureaucrats’ plan to allow an intelligence agency to spy on Australian citizens.

Australians don’t even know the name of the former spy convicted Friday. . .

For many, Australian authorities took a step too far in June 2019 in their bid to chase down whistleblowers, intimidate journalists and protect government secrets.

Police raided the home of News Corp. journalist Annika Smethurst, and the next day the headquarters of the Australian Broadcasting Corp. Both media outlets had used leaked government documents as the basis of public interest journalism.

The search warrants were issued under Section 70 of the Crimes Act 1914, which prohibited a government employee from sharing information without a supervisor’s permission.

That section has since been replaced under national security legislation that expanded the crime to include a government employee sharing opinions or reporting conversations between others.

Imagine Watergate with such inhibition of a free press.

Yes, that was disgusting. Not just the spying but Australia trying to rip off a new little country trying to establish itself.

    Who would have imagined

    https://news.yahoo.com/kangaroos-pouch-much-more-complex-192056924.html
    A kangaroo's pouch is much
more complex than you might think

    • A kangaroo pouch may look like a simple pocket, but it's actually a complex nursery that contains everything a growing joey needs.

    • The pouch is hairless on the inside, and is lined with sweat glands that release antimicrobial liquid to keep the joey safe from germs.

    • It also has built-in nipples that release customized milk for every stage of the joey's development.

They are a wild lawless bunch in NSW.

    Fines handed out

NSW Police revealed more breaches of COVID public health orders, dishing out a $5000 to a tour company that drove three busloads of tourists to a zoo in the state's west yesterday.

About 9.30am yesterday police said the buses arrived at the Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo.

Of the 128 staff and guests involved, at least 76 were not permitted to travel outside Greater Sydney.

Staff at the zoo refused to allow the travellers off the buses and police were called.

Meanwhile police fined a couple who refused to sign in using a QR code at a restaurant in Forster last night.

It is alleged a man smashed a bottle of water and punched the restaurant's owner, a 39-year-old man.

A woman then allegedly bit a 44-year-old man attempting to intervene.

They both fled the area but were found later by police.

What's the bet those tour buses where community organised, not regular commercial outfits taking bookings from random tourists.

As for the couple, it doesn't surprise me that they're from the Mid North Coast. Beach Bogans, as we refer to the uber white coastal drinker. Or in this case, perhaps Salty Rednecks is a more apt term.

A giant Tesla battery pack burst into flames during testing,
and it took 150 firefighters 4 days to put out

A Tesla "Megapack" battery pack caught fire during testing on Friday, and it took firefighters four days to extinguish the blaze, Australian local authorities said on Monday.

A Megapack is Tesla's largest battery product, and can store energy generated by solar panels or wind turbines. The Victorian Big Battery project, where the fire started on Friday morning, is made up of 210 Megapacks.

The fire at the project in Victoria, Australia, was under control as of Monday afternoon local time, the Country Fire Authority (CFA) said in a statement.

And what is the Chernobyl effect of such fires?
Lithium toxicity or others unique to such energy storage?

Lithuania has more guts than many other larger countries.
“China has recalled its ambassador to Lithuania and expelled the Baltic nation's top representative to Beijing over the country's decision to allow self-governing Taiwan to open an office in Lithuania under its own name.”

    Police oppression?
Nah, just a number of people who spend their time on social media being hysterical about public health measures.
They are usually people with one functioning neurone or bored angry young men who need to find an outlet for their energy. Unless they are INCELS and then all bets are off.
