We shall soon know if thug cops can murder innocent black people anytime they feel like it without suffering any consequences =

Closing arguments set to begin in Amber Guyger's murder trial for killing Botham Jean
The defense rested its case Monday in the murder trial of former police officer Amber Guyger for killing Botham Jean in his Dallas apartment in 2018, setting the stage for each side to present closing arguments.

    The jury is now deliberating.

Amber Guyger's fate in jurors' hands after both sides deliver closing arguments in murder trial
Guyger's defense said she shot Jean out of fear, then realized her mistake. But the prosecution says arguments of self-defense don't apply because Jean was not a threat.

Court recessed after closing arguments, just before 1 p.m. Jurors did not immediately begin deliberations, but they are expected to begin later Monday afternoon. They will decide whether Guyger is guilty or not guilty of either murder or manslaughter.

Prosecutor Jason Fine began the state's closing arguments by reading something Guyger said during her testimony: "I never want anybody to have to go through or even imagine going through what I felt that night."

"Are you kidding me?" he said, crumpling up the paper he was reading from and tossing it on the floor. "That is garbage."

He urged the jury to think from Jean's perspective — for them to imagine coming home from a long day and sitting down with a bowl of ice cream when they're shot by an intruder.

    Verdict in... Guilty of murder...

    Faces 99 years....

That's a tough sell to me from what I've heard, but I'm totally a bystander...

    Ok, but i wonder.....
if we consider our possible social attitudes as being on a spectrum
Lets say japan is on the far left of that spectrum in the way of restricting guns and having any sort of violence being highly discouraged

and lets consider the myth of old west tombstone as being on the far right....where everyone wears a gun all the time and is ready to instantly fight for his rights or honor

it seems to me that the further right we move on the spectrum.... we gain more individual rights to self defense....otoh if everyone is armed all the time,.. you also NEED to defend yourself more often, and the inexorable reality is that there are going to be more accidents of this type.... where this lady THOUGHT she was defending herself, but was actually killing an unarmed man in his own home

    frankly, i agree with you
But isn’t the whole point of the criminal justice system to show everyone what they face when they shoot someone incorrectly so that people will have a second thought before they do this sort of thing!

i do not have an answer here...just asking a question for our mutual discussion
I mean.... if the shooter was a black guy who broke into a pn unarmed white woman's house and shot her.... wouldn’t the expected outcome be similar? And in that circumstance I doubt we would be very concerned about the fate of the black guy who killed an innocent white woman through shocking carelessness

Great points... doubtful this would be in the news much all if the races were reversed.

I have no answers either... my only comment is the charge of murder... seems a reach.... what's the motive here?

I agree. It was a perfect storm IMO. It could happen again in another town. Some blame should go to the Landlord.

Her fake crying episode on the stand did her in. She was not credible in the least.

I don't think Texas requires motive. Instead of a first degree and second degree murder, the go from manslaughter- murder - capital murder (eligible for death penalty).

I believe murder requires intent, which I'm not sure the prosecution proved. Killing someone who was sitting in their apartment eating ice cream is inexcusable though. And if the roles were reversed, Amber Guyger would have been remembered as a hero, and Jean would have been a murderous thug who should have paid attention. We finally might be getting to the point in this country where police are held to the same standards as civilians.

Yes, i agree that the charge is a reach
Otoh, certain areas of the country are really into the idea that the time should fit the crime. And it seems like a fools errand to look at there jurisprudence from the context that you are applying.

basically i agree with you, and recognize that laws are applied differently in different localities

Well, he probably should have put some identifying name plates on everybody's doors, so there would be no confusion.

If they had been labeled "White Lady Cop" and "Black Accountant", we likely wouldn't be here today...

yeah, you know, i have thought about various bits of trouble i got into in my youth
And frankly, as a good kid, i got lots of breaks.... kids will be kids sort of thing
Not unlike the afluenza defense, or that wannabe rapist of a drunk girl in stanford, and many other examples.... if you are a “good person from a good family.... you get lots of special treatment without a second thought. But if you are not from a good background, well, we have to “teach them a lesson”

I am agreeing with you that the 12 hour shift excuse would not even be an option for a lower class person.... although, one also has to admit that she did not seem to get much mileage from that defense

She was toast once her fellow employees testified that even if she reasonably believed it was her apartment and it was broken into, she totally violated department policies with how she conducted herself.

Easy verdict after that. She's a murderer

Yeh, I agree with you. If we go down that road I guess the buck stops with who...the architect?

I don’t know if we know everything the jury knows, but just going on what’s been reported I don’t know why she didn’t just say “I made some bad decisions, I’m sorry, and I beg for leniency”.

The only thing that would have been better than today’s verdict would have been one where Amber would have gotten the death penalty, If enough of the thug cops get convicted of murder and do some serious prison time maybe the other idiots will realize that their badges don't give them licenses to kill innocent people.
