Yes you can provided you have a leadership that doesn't see division and group think as a means to an end. A leadership bound and determined to sacrifice community for the sake of naked political power will always find some point of fracture, some psychological tectonic plate to manipulate.

Do you think making such ridiculous statements makes your position more credible?

You do realize you could have said the same about almost every major civilization throughout history. Starting with the early Mesopotamian civilizations over 10,000 years ago. They could have said:
    • We built you cities.
    • We showed you how to domesticate animals.
    • We gave you writing
    • We now have farming so you no longer have to hunt and gather
    • We brought you religion.
    • We now have laws.
    • We are building massive monuments.
    • We now have organized trade.
    • People are better off now than ever before. Why would we want to change?...

You mean the modern UK? Yep, it's trashed. You guys trashed it, and the same is being done to America.

Both nations were pretty incredible at the end of the last century. Great places to be, by all accounts.

It must be hard watching the world, the younger generation and indeed America change around you and yet feel so powerless to do anything about it. I feel for you.

Whatever drive the 'change the world' types once had, has long gone. They're lost to the middle-class freedom dreams of their bourgeois parents. All they do now is gripe, from the comfort and safety of their First World Capitalist bubble.

America is constantly changing and that is part of the reason we have benefited civilization so much. We are a country that demands to move forward and try new ideas.

Weird use of modem UK. Given its always been an imperialist construct, your left wing pretense is slipping. Must be taking a toll on you ;)

I would like to reduce excessive foreign outsourcing and foreign imports

without jobs, America will fall, and seems many republicans do not care, because they are bought and paid for by the mega corps

    greedy Corporatism is destroying capitalism

Given the US is the worst offender for breaking WTO rules, this "reduce foreign imports" angle is typically a red herring. There's only one genuine way of doing that: eliminate income inequalities to allow savings rates to increase.

The US is certainly big business orientated, making the supposed love of individualism a cruel joke. However, you referred to imports and you've ultimately targeted the wrong problem. The US 's trade imbalance problem reflects low savings rates. Its essentially just basic macro and based on GDP accounting

I said excessive foreign imports, imports are fine and needed, it's the 'excessive' that is the problem

I was replying to savings rates, when I was young, a savings account had 8% interest - credit card interest rates are insane, people need to stop using them, use debit cards instead

There is no such thing as excessive imports. There are only trade imbalances. That reflects savings rates and those saving rates will never be sorted with the Dickensian inequalities that both Dems and Repubs tolerate. Either party suggesting that they'll sort out the imbalance is selling snake oil.

19 years ago was one of the saddest days in my life. I didn't care if you were a Democrat, Republican or any other group. It didn't matter what religion you were or what your skin color was. As each plane crashed into each tower and you watched the smoke coming out and scenes of people covered in ash you prayed that as many could be saved as possible. As you watched people jump from the towers all you could do was cry and say Oh! My God. News reports of a plane crashing into the Pentagon was almost to much to bear. A plane crashed in Pennsylvania and all are dead. You have just witnessed something you couldn't believe could happen to the country you loved. No protests that day. No riots and burning down storefronts and looting. All lives mattered that day. God mattered that day. My family mattered that day. Our country, even with it's flaws, mattered that day. I mourned that day like I have never mourned before or since. Today I will not banter with my fellow forum members but as an American only wish you peace and love. My greatest hope would be that tonight no city has protests but pauses for reflection.

Sorry to jump into the conversation, but I agree that the savings rate of the general population is too low. On the other hand, the top few % save at a rate that is unimaginable. However, that money is not always invested back into the economy. Why? Because when they won the game, most people stop playing. Therefore, a lot of capital is sitting on the sidelines without creating productivity. That's the downside of outsized wealth inequality.

Mind you, I am not an economist, but I have an interest in the subject.

Truly a sad day, and one that most people will remember for the rest of their lives. I have flashbacks today where I was when the first images from the burning towers came in.

I hope the same tribute will eventually be paid to the 190,000+ covid victims of 2020. So far, I don't see a lot of empathy, but rather political bickering over their deaths.

Gosh, you're even copying and pasting from the right wing hymn book! When did it all go wrong? We might need a telephon to help the struggling left wing pretense....

when the imports affect the job market to such a degree, then import taxes need to go up so Americans can compete, natural resources I have no issues with us importing as much as needed
