82% of Americans say that racism is a big problem or somewhat of a problem in society today. Almost half say it's a big problem. No doubt many of us recognize that this is an issue from our daily experience - from observing how minorities are treated on a daily basis and even attitudes on this forum.

The recent practice of Republican candidates demonizing minorities is no doubt causing some of this concern.

And it's not just minorities who say it's a problem.

% of Americans who feel racism is a big problem:
    Black: 66%
    Hispanic: 64%
    White: 43%

No, it people jumping on this band wagon and calling it a problem when it's not is the problem

Really. Do people not understand demographics? It's not the cops fault that the areas they go to is polluted by crime and violence that more than often involves a gun. Neither is it their fult that the people who inhabit these dangerous areas happen to be predominately black.

"Among racial and ethnic groups, African Americans had the highest poverty rate, 27.4 percent, followed by Hispanics at 26.6 percent and whites at 9.9 percent. 45.8 percent of young black children (under age 6) live in poverty, compared to 14.5 percent of white children."

You don't hear anything on the news about white teens being killed by cops. Why is that?

A White Teen Was Killed By A Cop And No One Took To The Streets. Is That A Problem?

Because unlike white people, black people pull the race card really quick. In this case, arn't they more racist? I have met black people who live in those bad areas. I've got to see alot of different types of people in the navy after all. Most of them would say that the probably wouldn't hang out with Buch of white people. Most of them shared that mind set. In fact, in the navy I have met more racist black people than white people.

This too is the result of history and culture.

Racism will exist it's a fact of life.

But to claim that it's the problem and it's an epidemic when it's not is making something out of nothing

Some places cops deep too dangerous and don't patrol there. So if cops do get called over there, where the population is predominantly black, don't blame him for being on edge around black people. It's after all a matter of life and death. Kids can use guns too. It's a fact that there is a rise in gangs using kids. So don't blame cops for having tiger fingers when going into those areas. Even that cop that slammed the black girl. When he was fired many students protested. Many.

This just goes to show that the cop was not a bad guy. He told the girl that she was under arrest for what ever she did. She didn't listen and remained in the desk. What, you just expect a cop to say "we'll that ok."? I don't get it. If you put them under arrest and they are not going willingly, then you use force. Isnt that the way it works? She's lucky that she didn't get tased.

You would hear about it if a racist black cop killed a white teen.

Al Roker met racism face to face when a taxi cab driver passed him by and then picked up a Caucasian passenger.

That most likely is job experience. After a while, the cab drivers notice that white people give more money than black people. It doesn't always have to be racism. It's demographics. Didn't I post the quote about poverty statistics?

Let's get the prissy liberal's opinion on that scenario. When I wait tables, I grumble when I keep getting black people in my section because I know if I get too many, I won't be able to pay my bills that week. A high rate of black customers on a normally lucrative night could ruin my whole week. Am I racist? Or am I just desperate for food, shelter, and electricity, amenities I would not be able to afford if all of my customers were black?

Personally, even on a good week, I can not afford to eat out at a restaurant. If they can, why can't they tip?

The problem here is rather simple to explain. Since the Civil Rights movement of the late 60's, the white community in the U.S. has move forward by leaps and bounds, regarding acceptance and equality towards other races. The Black community however simply has not. They refuse to move forward and just evaluate each person based on their own merit. They see everybody who is not black, but especially whites, as the primary reason for their lack of performance in society.

Currently what we're witnessing, is young black people who have adopted the racism that they seem to decry, but in fact it is they who have become the most virulent racists in the U.S. We'll get nowhere on this as a society, until blacks start living in the present instead of the past.

You know, these poverty percentages for children never take into consideration the differential in numbers of children per family.

For example, if most poor families have four children and most non-poor families only have two children, that doubles the "children in poverty" figure.

Because they feel entitled to it because of slavery?

It's called being cheep. You want to have the experience while paying as little as possible.

    Everyone does this.

It's just that as you climate the ladder of class, you see it being dominated more and more by whites.

This cab thing happens to white people too. They just don't cry racism when it happens.

Everyone struggles and we all make excuses when we fail. For blacks, their go-to excuse is racism. I would probably use it too if I were black. Instead, I suspect the reason for my failures is that I was threateningly handsome and intelligent and that scared people out of hiring me.

In reality, as your post attests to, white people have largely gotten over racism. But we are getting pissy about always getting accused of being racist. Especially when the people making the accusations have absolutely nothing of value to contribute to society and it's obvious to us that such is their problem, not racism. My reality is that I have chosen to drink, do drugs, and chase loose women instead of developing any valuable skills. Of course, I still show up to my menial job on time and work hard to perform it well, which is not what blacks who accuse us of racism do.

Clearly that's not the case if even white people think Racism is a problem.

I'll bet those same don't consider themselves racist. It's always the "other" whites who are racist.

Thinking racism is a problem is a major platform of one of the two political parties, of which many whites are members. Those white people toeing their party's line in a poll says nothing about racism.

Yeah, and that's my entire point. Look, I'm a white dude, married now to a mexican woman for 24yrs. When we first got together, a quarter of a century ago, I kind of expected it would be "Old White People" who would look sideways at us, but in reality, it was much more the Old Mexican People who looked on us with disdain. This was a real eye opener for me. We don't see color in our relationship, other than I use a lot more sunscreen than my wife does. The fact is, whites get the (*)(*)(*)(*) end of the stick nowdays, as blacks and mexicans feel empowered to be racist, and they don't even realize it. They honestly feel that racism is the exclusive domain of whites, which is in and of itself a racist attitude.

Can you imagine if a Jew started calling for throwing people into the ovens? That is what blacks in particular are doing. Frankly, as a people who have felt the sting of racism, I find them more guilty than whites when the exhibit racism, as they SHOULD have a greater sense of compassion regarding things of this nature. I believe that many blacks feel as I do, and just want to like or hate you based on your particular merits or lack thereof. But many blacks are only interested in vengeance. It is vengeance politics that they are engaging in, and it's making them violent.

So on a thread about the problem of racism in America so far the consensus is that Blacks are the problem.

when I lived in manhattan, I'd watch several cabs I was trying to flag down drive right past me and pickup someone down the road from me, I'm white, they were white... so who were they racist against... sometimes cabbies just don't see you there, they are DRIVIING A CAR while trying not to hit people and find fares... they won't see everyone... usually Al Roker is wearing a suit and is dressed well, those are exactly the types of people cabs try to pickup, they pay far better than people in tshirts and groups...

I'm sick of peoples first response to be racism... when they have NO evidence of it...

do you deny there are examples of black people being racist?

we already acknowledge there are white examples, but everyone seems to be dismissive when black people are equally as racist...

is there any doubt that affirmative action is racist at its core? its legal racism, yet I don't hear black people complaining about it when it works for them?

if they are against racism, shouldn't they be opposed to programs that give them an advantage based purely on their skin color?

(I'm discriminatory against the double standard and hypocrisy in america, on both sides)

If the question was "Is racism a problem in America today"? The answer is yes, but not all on the side of whites.

Greatest quote I ever heard. Black man in a race argument....."I can't be racist I'm black"

What I also find interesting is the amount of Black people, some famous, some YouTubers that say it's as much if not more a black problem than white problem. No one is listening or wants to hear it though. They are demonized and called all kinds of horrible things.

For many minorities it's an excuses to demand unfair treatment and ask for compensation. (my opinion)

More than they will admit to yes, but not the only problem.

Racism is just a fad and will soon be replaced with something else.

    - - - Updated - - -

I would say those who believe in the myth of racism are the problem. If people did not believe in such fairy tales it would not be a problem.

The problem is living in a cruel world where success doesn't come easy. Race is just an often used excuse.

It is frustrating, especially to poor white people, that we are held responsible not only for our own failures, but for the failures of an entire race who, by our estimate, are doing as well or better than we are.

82% of Americans disagree with you. 91% if you include those who feel it's a small problem. Only 7% feel that it's not an issue. So your opinion that it's a myth doesn't hold water if almost all other Americans see racism as a problem.
