Anyone else find this Coronavirus panic weirdly refreshing?

This is spread around the globe.
That means tens of millions have been infected, easily.
That means millions upon millions of people over 70 have been infected.

15% of 3 million is 450,000
30% is 900,000

Do you see these numbers of people over 70 dying?

 

It's harsh to know how many people have been actually infected.

Trump wasn't able to cut food stamps during this pandemic, but he did try

 

Food stamp usage dropped significantly before the virus because many people found working class jobs.

Now Congress is authorizing expanded dollars for food stamps because so many businesses are shuttering and people can't work.

The "concept" is good and at least it's something. Two hours would be better.

Hopefully for those, people are already delivering groceries to their homes. For seniors who are relatively healthy, a "normal" amount of shopping time should be plenty.

Separate shopping hours for seniors also serves to protect them from shopping with the general population where a lot of us may be unknowingly carrying and spreading the virus.

 

that would be the supply chains... they've been disrupted by the panic buying & travel restrictions/lockdowns...

i expect it to take 6 months or longer before they are back to full capacity...

There are no shortages of raw materials or of manufacturing capacity (so far).

I have read that there are 100,000 new jobs just to stock shelves. That's pretty crazy. Those jobs will surely be temporary.

The governor here authorized beer and liquor distribution trucks (and drivers) to help move grocery supplies to stores. That was a pretty creative redistribution of resources, since restaurants and bars are shuttering.

Pretty soon these hoarders either won't be able to walk through their home without tripping on piles of TP and paper towels (and everything else they're buying out), or they'll run out of money, especially if their employer closes the doors.

I don't see how the panic buying can last more than a few weeks.

 

Just use credit cards and pay them off with electronic funds transfers. I've done that for years and hardly ever use cash. Even parking meters take credit cards these days.

I might have agreed with you at one point but not anymore. Once the mask has slipped off enough I just find that I don’t care anymore. The mask was a requirement.

 

That's the issue.

If you can spread it to 4 people and they each spread it to 4 people after a few days, that only has to happen 15 times and the number is 1.099T.
And this has been around since the fall.
Now obviously those numbers can't happen, but conservatively there are likely tens of millions infected and nobody knows

Were credit cards a "thing" when the banks shut down for "bank holidays" right before the Great Depression?

 

I'm at the point where I'd back a 14-day national quarantine to get it over with. During 14 days, people who get sick can get tested and treated. The virus would die out in 14 days with people who have it without symptoms.

As it stands right now, they are looking at July or August for this thing to die out, and they can't guarantee that.

Short term pain for long term gain.

The banks will be very happy to lend you money via credit card if they shut down the ATM's.

 

Long term loss.
Health experts guess as much as economists.
When supply chains run out there will be rioting in the cities. No delivery will be able to make it in and if it does the store will be mobbed and looted.
This will end badly with serious loss of life and major harm to our way of life.
This is not intelligent.
This is bureaucrats doing stupid **** because they feel like they have to do something.

Meanwhile many people died of simple colds and flu today

 

I am wondering what that looks like.. only homeless wandering (and ********) in the streets? Must truly look like the "zombie apocalypse" in that case.

 

I did have a major flub in that original post....the Bay Area "shelter at home" order is 3 weeks, not 3 months.

 

You mean the ones who recently told folks, via the TV, to stop panic buying and hoarding? Yes, I do.
