We had a few donkeys over the years an I had them as a child. Donks are very intelligent and bond with humans more so than any other equines. I had my donkey Rosie at a rodeo hubby was penning cows with at with our horse. Horse owners gave snobby looks at me and my donk, one ask, " what do you do with that " insulting my Rosie. Well we were out an open field with the horse and donk Rosie followed behind hubby and his horse. A lot of horses came charging up to fence about 200 yards away from me and right next to them. I knew what was about to happen! Rosie got spooked and came wide open charging for me kicking and hew hawing. No where to run or hide. She stopped right at my feet wrapped her head and body around me put her head on my chest and just cried like only a donk can cry. The horse was spooked also went in the other direction. We had to chase him down till Rosie finally brought him back to us.
Donkeys are not stubborn people are. A donkey will just check things out for a little then proceed to do what you ask sometimes.
I miss ours but we had to give her to a good home. She is happy guarding cows for past 10 years now. Time fly's.
i knew a farmer that used to keep his angrier bulls in check by leashing them to a donkey. it worked.
We currently have 18 mammoth donkeys, 2 draft mules, and a 17 hand Oldenburg on the farm. No one can hear a donkey bray and not smile.
It sure does. Rosie rules the bulls and cows where she is far as I know. Haven't visited her in 5 years now. Every time I pass the road where she is now I think of her. That was what Rosie was going to be a breeder for guard donks. I named it Sassy Ass Acre's but it never happened.
You are sooo lucky! I still miss that sound. And kissing those sweet lips. And going out at night on a full moon and laying down with her. I'd lay my head on her neck. Horse would lay with me too but would not lay down around hubby till hubby got injured.
My first donkey Katy in 1959 was large standard. She was a card got her from Sears and Roebuck catalog Mexican Burro. Rosie my last one was from Sicily. We went to A mule and donkey show in N.Georgia couple decades ago and there was one pair of mules there that was absolutely beautiful and they were huge. I'd say about 16 hands or more. A show we went to in Florida had donkeys playing ball.
