Apoliticism is defined as antipathy towards all political affiliations. I think I would consider myself apolitical or at least a quietist. I believe that participation in politics and political systems is problematic. There is a strong religious component to my position. However, I would like to put forward my theory of why apoliticism is a good thing: 1. Political participation of the masses only gives the latter the illusion of empowerment. In every system of government, including democracy, power is ultimately wielded by people of influence; the wealthy and the highly educated. The common people, and particularly the marginalized segments of society, are never empowered. 2. Political participation takes the focus off of the heavenly Kingdom of God. In my belief; the “Kingdom of God” is an actual, real coming divine Government which will be heralded by the Messiah, and through it all the present day governments, states, and regimes, all of them without exception are characterized by corruption, oppression of the weak, and injustice, will be overthrown 3. Worldly politics tends to bring out the worst in people; making them partisan and creating needless division in society. Very often it leads to violence. Would be interested in any criticism or comments.
Government is a necessary evil that all human groups of any size will create to serve and protect their fundamental collective needs. Government, by its nature , will encourage the evolution of a corrupt ruling political class. I doubt that there is any viable alternative way. The various experiments with built in checks and balances have failed over time. The American experiment is being put to the test right now.
I’m glad you characterized government as “evil” (your words not mine). I agree with you that government is necessary for the maintenance of law and order, which is why I am not an anarchist or any kind of revolutionary. My point is that people should not taint themselves by participating in a system that you yourself described as “evil”. You talk about there being no viable alternative. In the theology I subscribe to, I believe that there is a coming Messianic government which will be characterized by true justice and empowerment of the weak and marginalized section of society; and the rightful subjugation of the present day ruling classes. Until that divine intervention happens, I believe people should remain aloof from the State as much as possible; refrain from displaying symbols like the national flag, reciting the national anthem, standing up for a judge, saluting soldiers, etc. I remain absolutely aloof from all institutions of the State as much as possible.
Not at all. Rather it is the acknowledgment that we cannot realistically do anything to stop the corruption and confront the powers that be. Ours is a grassroots method of educating the public to not rely on the State and to decrease its importance in their psyche. This is positive and constructive withdrawal from politics, not to mention strategic.
I see. So it is the 2 monkeys approach to politics. You see the evil, but say and do nothing to oppose it.
I said something against the evil on this very thread. Speaking against the evil of the State doesn't necessitate participation in politics.
